    In this episode, we explore an absolutely massive steelworks. As soon as we were inside, we discovered this would be a difficult exploration. Workers started approaching openings in the building and we soon realized they were sealing up the building.

      They are trying to keep EVERYONE out as it's a huge insurance liability if someone were to get hurt in there. People fall and die all the time in steel mills while they're running, and those are people that know the area. These kids could've very easily ended up in a seriously bad spot.
      Given that's a smaller melt shop, I'd say that the roof is around 100' up. The sheeting used on the roofs is thin and not meant to be walked on. If I'm to walk on any roof at the mill, I have to have a harness and be tied off to a lifeline. Hell, we've had floor grating just give out and people fall through.

Immediately after that on the intercom I heard "help requested in the liquor aisle" and i was shook and looked around and there was nobody else there beside me and my friend. Security definitely will use nonconfrontation methods to scare away people.

    You think that's scary? You should see steel mills in operation. I work at the largest blast furnace in the western hemisphere.
    Generally speaking, mills don't get "abandoned" as much as just shut down. There's so much money invested in these places that they are idled (shut down) while a company awaits a new buyer, or the right offer to sell off the equipment, or for scrap prices to reach a good level. There's lots of old departments like that where I work and even us workers technically aren't supposed to go in them. It's a huge insurance liability to the company if someone, like you for example, were to get hurt in there.
    The aluminized jackets aren't to protect against the steel. They're to protect from heat. Molten steel goes through those coats like butter.

      @CATASTEROID934 Před 6 lety +14

      How many days (or weeks) does the furnace take to reach operating conditions from cold and how long does it operate before the contents have to be dumped? Do they even do that any more? What brand of kiln gun do they use to shoot the slag off of hard to reach places if they even use one? My dad worked at a smallish English iron founders (W. Wilder & Sons) right on the Thames about 10-15 miles south-south-east of Oxford when it was in operation and they were taking chunks of all the surplus landing craft that were stacked up in the scrapyard nearby that were used for the Normandy landings, I found the broken up chunks of a Wilder & Sons lamppost moulding negative in the back yard of a property nearby. It's been turned into flats now and Wilders continued life as a car maintenance garage as Walter Wilders and then at present as a tractor sales and servicing business called Lister Wilder, the station for Wallingford was enormous to feed the malthouses (all gone now as of early 2000, over a millennium of malt production ceased when Paul's malt was demolished and I wish I got a chance to have a look round the inside prior to it's demolition as these fellows would do as my grandmother was friends with a lady who's husband was a manager at the plant but I was just a boy) and breweries (also none left) but it's just a small heritage railway now.

      @mephInc Před 6 lety +36

      Caleb Howes
      As far as a blast furnace goes, the object is to never let it get cold. We run 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We only shut down once every few months for 12-24hrs for larger jobs, or in the case of an emergency. Even with that, we try to keep the furnace hot. After being down 24hrs, we can be back up to full wind (120 cubic meters) in a couple hours. The furnace I work at has 4 tap holes and one is always open at any given time. Drill up (open), block up (close), drill up, block up, etc. There's always a couple minute overlap. The furnace is continuously fed via conveyor belt, and produces 14,000+ tons of iron daily.

      Thanks for getting back to me, I didn't think such large operations still existed in the western world but I guess the US still has a pretty healthy industrial sector whereas the majority of the UK's plant was relocated wholesale to India or China to escape the rising coal and coke prices. The amber tarp of light was especially satisfying, and did almost look like an amber wall backlit by the sun. Your sense of the spaces you explore is artistic, well composed, and rendered with an esthetic that brings it to life in a new and exciting way. I appreciate the history you include in your narrative as it lends a depth we can use for further research into the past life of the industrial foundry spaces. I must admit that the loud banging by the workmen was unsettling...thoughts of you sealed in with no safe exit had me worried on your behalf. There's possibly one thing you guys are forgetting. If you rented a car in Europe, please be aware that they have tracking devices in all of them. They know where you are going and can contact authorities at any time. Rental cars here in the states, especially sports cars also use tracking devices and can not only monitor your locations, they can also monitor your speed in real time. I know from personal experience. Just a heads up y'all.

    • @TheFlatlander440
      @TheFlatlander440 Před 6 lety +2

      I think it also has to do with the kind of car people rent. In my case, I had rented a Mustang GT, 4.6L V8. I was driving to a golf course for a round of golf and got a bit heavy footed. Needless to say I was driving well above the posted speed limit and within about 2 mins I received a cell call from the rental company asking if I was ok. I replied yes and they advised me to slow down and drive the posted speed limit. They didn't charge me anything more for the rental when I returned it. By the way, they also knew my location but obviously didn't know where I was going, nor did I specify that information. This happened in Mesquite, Nevada in 2009 and had rented the car out of Phoenix, Az.

    • @TheFlatlander440

      True. But I will say that was the first time it happened to me and rather freaked me out knowing they had been monitoring me considering I was in the middle of the desert, lol. By the way, I was doing about 60 mph over the posted speed limit on the Interstate there. No cops though, and I did toe the line after that, lol.

I'm also impressed how calm you stay when you know security is present. You probably get suggestions all the time but there are some abandoned military barracks, along with military bunkers built into walls of sand in Fort Ord, California. There were more abandoned buildings there, including an abandoned park, movie theatre, church, boiler rooms, barracks, bunkers and miles of unexplored land. You should come check it out before it's bull dozed over. Loving this channel!

    This place is slowly going away. Approx half the building is demolished. Very easy to get into, no security anywhere. There is a very interesting smaller building that you missed, where the metal was tested. It has a laboratory with really interesting equipment, some robotics, etc. If you're in the area, take a look before it's all gone!

  • @GKBigmack
    @GKBigmack Před 5 lety +9

    Though not familiar with the site, i am familiar with the process. This is a continuous caster. Ladles (The pots) are full of molten steel, degassed, and metallurgy adjusted before being bottom tapped to pour a slab/billet. This cast is then cut to length by torches to be used in other areas of the plant. If this is a flat product mill, these would be hot rolled/cold rolled/coated and annealed before being used in things like automotive body panels, washing machines, or roofing.
    If this is a solids plant, they would be cast as rounds or square billets before hot/cold rolling into things like railroad rails, I Beams, seamless pipe, or other structural shapes.
    I'm not surprised that this plant was idled in 08/09. That was a hard year on steel, with global overcapacity and the downturn in the economy. My own plant was idled for about 9 months before things recovered enough to get called back to work.
    Most of the structure of the building seems to be in good shape. Everything looks rough, but most casters worldwide are in a similar condition. Casting molten steel isn't a clean or pretty process.
    Any questions of a steelie, feel free to ask.

Usually the cameras themselves never had a particularly high quality image, and the lenses are so worn from years of sun, wind, and rain, that the image quality degrades to pretty much useless pixelated mush.

    you guys are the real deal- insane!!! And skills!!! |You could easily fit in with some of the scouting classes I had way back in the day. Two hints - rubber soles and softer steps plus watching the floor where you are going to step, for grit or debris that will make a loud scrunch noise, and a few basic hand signals to avoid whispers that travel easily. AND ALWAYS keep your leather and nylon gloves, like Mechanix, close at hand. One sliver or wire or glass or even wood that you don't see, or one little spider that you rest your hand on without seeing it, can change your whole day around. Good luck and keep up the great work!
