      Cool video and an interesting explore! You probably did this but when exploring an abandoned mine it is crucial to have several extra light sources and to make sure someone out there knows you went in. Also a good thing to make this clear in case others are inspired to try exploring for themselves. :)

      I wish they would've suffered in the mine the way Phillip Mercer suffered in all the mines he visited in the novel "The Medusa Stone." It would be droll. People need to spend as much money on my Dance of Death James Grider novel on Amazon as they did on The Medusa Stone.

      It's not necessary a gas mask that will save you. A gas mask filters out bad gases so you can continue to breath in oxygen, but it's the lack of oxygen within those toxic gases underground that kills you. In some wet areas underground with no ventilation the buildup of toxic gases can be so intense you suffocate due to the lack of oxygen. You really just need a quality gas meter that can pick up the various common contaminants found underground, such as a 3gas reader.

    I'm all for exploring, but I'll never enter an abandoned mine. Since they're abandoned, the ventilation isn't maintained. That lets crap build up in the air so that there's a serious risk of suffocation any deeper than ~100 feet straight forward. I'm not an expert, but I consider it a way bigger risk than injury from falling rocks.

The other common option for the sparkles is Mica, or Muscovite. But seeing as how you were in a supposed Iron mine, I'd say Pyrite is the most likely candidate!

    • @martijnheil8825
      @martijnheil8825 Před 3 lety +3

      @@caledonhockley883 There's multiple risks with gasses underground.
      There's the explosive type, which can blow up when you're standing inside a cloud of it and anything causes a tiny spark (any electronics could do that)
      Then there's the toxic type, depending on the concentration you either suffer health consequences or you die fast because of the toxicity.
      Another problem with the gasses underground is that they displace oxygen, so even if the gas itself doesn't kill you, you'll die because of lack of oxygen.
      A gas mask does not protect against lack of oxygen. To operate in an environment without oxygen you need a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) system, like those firefighters use.
      The best way to partly mitigate these risks is to be careful and carry a gas monitor which warns you of low oxygen contents, explosive gasses and so on.

    Whenever you explore a cave or a mine, there is a trick where you never get lost.. ;)
    When you enter the cave/mine, just keep following the wall to your left or to your right.. No matter how complex the tunnel system is, you will eventually end up at the entrance where you started (or another entrance if there's more then one) and if you had enough of exploring, you can always just turn around and follow that same wall back to the start, knowing it will take the same amount of time you spent exploring thus far..
    This works in all tunnel systems, as well as hedge mazes and so forth! ( ^.^)

A couple of steps in there was a bend to the left which was followed by a drop of about 4-5 meters. We were thinking of going down, but we didn't have a rope or anything to get back up. Anyway, the ceiling above the drop was a bit higher and what we hadn't realised yet was that it was covered in spiders. The whole fucking ceiling had spiders crawling around and dangling down, so we got the fuck out of there. But when we turned around we noticed there were more spiders which we already passed and they were inches above us. Heh, talking about wifi. In order to get radio communications in an underground mine, you need it wired with what's called a "Leaky Feeder" - it's a type of data cable that picks up radio signals and transmits them along a wire in such a way that the signal "leaks" out over the length of the cable. A few meters of rock will block radio signals, but the leaky feeder lets it bend around the corners so you can keep in touch with the guy in the parallel drift, or the control room back on the surface, or anyone in between.

      That was a puddle of water getting ripples from a reptile moving in it, I think. Also, snakes are hardy as heck and could survive months down there, but I think it was more likely to be a salamander (they’re apparently common in caves, Iunno how they survive but they can) since they’re tied to water bodies.
