    Always Board Never Boring recently backed Dungeons & Lasers Encounters, which means he has a massive stack of miniatures and terrain for use with Dungeons and Dragons or other tabletop RPGs. In this sponsored video, he assembles and paints the terrain and monsters necessary to run a roleplaying scenario set in the Swamps of Doom. Will the heroes survive an encounter with crabs and find the friendly bullywug?
    This video covers a lot of ground, from assembling miniatures to painting using various methods, so you may want some time stamps:

    Loved the "proper paintjob". I use contrasts and speedpaints a lot, but for special minis, always come back to the good old acrylics and washes painting style

      @reuterss306 Před rokem +3

      I am not quite sure why though. Imho using speedpaints as base and then highlight on top gives sometimes even better results, especially when mixing it zenithal colorvariants, giving them a glaze here and there and other little techniques. I also paint traditionally once in a while, but not necessarily because the end result is better, but because of nostalgia and I like mixing paints on the wetpalette. :D

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před rokem +3

      I very rarely use Speedpaints. I don't think even my very best Speedpaint jobs are half as good as my traditional work, and I feel that trying to make them look that good would require so much effort it would defeat the point in using them in the first place. But I think everyone finds their own tools that they are happiest with and get the best results from.

      I think the issue with speedpaints, contrast, and washes is that everything looks too similar. Quite apart from unifying the miniatures, it makes them look sort of bland and toyish across a whole army.
      Speed and contrast at least give you a better color range to work from than relying on washes. I really don't like the sort of 3d color depth effect that zenithal gives to glaze painting. It's very un-natural looking for anything that's supposed to look realistic.

    Hey! Thanks for sharing this! I have that Archon set, and I'm just starting to paint the pieces, so you are right on target for me. And of course, I've just supported the NEW DeusLair offering so I'll have something to paint when this Encounters set is finished. I especially appreciate your including Army Painter Speed Paints because I had planned to use them, too.

    Very cool! I love the flavor text at the end. But I especially love the thought of giving the Bullywug an obsidian edged weapon! Those are crazy sharp. If I were stating that spear in 5E I would have it crit on a 19-20, or have it deal an extra damage dice when critting. Good thing it sounds like the players won't be fighting him... If they survive...

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před rokem +2

      I don't know why that idea popped into my head, but as soon as I saw it was a stone-tipped spear, I thought of doing it as something like obsidian. I guess when you live in a swamp with giant crabs you need something with a bit of an edge on it!

    Nice work. I probably would have done the crabs a bit brighter personally. Good chance to use all the weird colors you don't often utilize. I think the thing on the big crabs back that you painted red is supposed to be a seaweed covered harpoon.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před rokem

      Thanks. I just love the way the Hardened Leather looks on carapace. I painted an amber hulk with it a while back so knew what it would look like and it was my first idea when I saw the crabs. I thought the thing on its back might have been something like a harpoon. Originally I thought it was too chunky for that, but if it's like a whaling harpoon then I suppose it would be pretty big.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před rokem +1

      The idea was inspired by the giant crabs that live in the swampy areas of Dark Souls 3. The small crabs are identified in the build instructions as mud crabs, which live in salt marshes, and there are species of crabs that live in mangrove swamps, like fiddler crabs.

    Honestly, even if I had no intention of running this campaign, (which I definitely do) I would have backed it solely for the miniatures. I love D&L's work. Even their scatter terrain is awesome. I mean look at so much stuff you get that could in effect aside from the Deuslair campaign be used for games like Rangers of Shadow Deep and whatnot.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před rokem +1

      I play Rangers of Shadow Deep and all my Dungeons & Lasers stuff sees regular use there. That's a game where every single scenario seems to demand something new, and D&L is a real blessing

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I had so much fun with RoSD just using all of the miniatures that come with all of the D&D board games, and Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures that I've collected, so I can't even imagine incorporating D&L elements. Even if you wanted to create your own 5E campaign, imagine the possibilities for big bads, just from the Super Stretch Goals. I mean Queen Anara and the Wolfrake are absolutely beyond badass, and I kinda want to see what you do with Queen Anara. I was brainstorming paint schemes for her all week last week. 😂

    On the giant crab, was the straight bit you painted red supposed to be a harpoon, with rope bits hanging off it?

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před rokem

      Yes, I think you are right. Originally I thought it was too chunky to be a spear or anything but someone else in the comments suggested a harpoon and on closer examination you can see the arrowhead point sticking into the carapace, so it is like a big whaling harpoon. It’s going to be something like seaweed hanging off of it though as the rope on the miniature looks quite different. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
