  • In this Tips & Tricks video, we'll look at setting up the default audio settings on your AppleTV to automatically play to multiple Airplay2 compatible Audio sources.
    Although this won't give you full front/back/left/right surround sound, it can allow you to have at least front and back audio sources leveraging your existing TV sound and a pair of Airplay2 compatible speakers such as the Apple HomePod or Sonos Ones.

      You can definitely output to multiple airplay2 targets if that's your question. Apple even let's you pay around with the airplay2 delay in the ATV settings now in case there's a slight discrepancy between the audio playback.
      Although not asked in the question, I wanted to offer my experience. In it's current form, you don't want to use Airplay2 for your home theatre setup. In the end I picked up a Sonos Beam for a few reasons for this use case.
      1) Because of the way Airplay2 was implemented on the Apple TV ( not part of core service but needed to be implemented in the apps ) I wasn't able to play Airplay2 from all my streaming sources. Some poorly designed apps didn't implement the Airplay2 function so I was left with nothing.
      2) Alternate Audio sources need love too. I have a Amazon FireTV as well as the Gaming console for the kids. Both of those needed better sound as well.
      3) Sonos 5.0/1 setup is more reliable. I was able to use any matched pair of Sonos speakers ( Symfonisk would work ) as my rears and it worked great.
      If you wanted to add additional Sonos speakers at the far end of the room, you can also group multiple Sonos systems together. So instead of the airplay2 to multiple targets you could have
      iPhone > SonosGroup1 >SonosGroup2
      Hopefully this makes sense!

      Wow. What a great question! So... it doesn’t appear that you can airplay from a phone/iPad to a video and an audio device at the same time. But... you CAN airplay to AppleTV from your phone/iPad, then you can use airplay audio from the AppleTV to multiple Airplay2 targets. No way that I’ve found (yet) to Airplay2 video to 2 different airplay 2 targets at the same time. Great question!!!

    Great video, it works great on my house. However, Airplay 2 won't play music on both my Apple TV and my Sonos speakers if I use Spotify or Pandora, it only works if I use Itunes. Do you know if there is a way to allow my Apple TV to let me play Spotify music to my Apple TV and my Sonos speakers at the same time?

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  Před 3 lety

      Hey Diego - I havens tested to see if this is different with iOS 14 or not, but this was one of the issues with the Apple TV. The Airplay2 feature needs to be written in to the app, it wasn't an automatic feature from the Apple TV. It might be that you'll have to play Spotify or Pandora from your phone to the AP2 speakers rather than using your Apple TV as the source. Pandora's not even available in Canada still so I'm really no help there at all. :(

    Hi, thanks for your video. When you output simultaneously to your Airplay2 HomePod and your HDMI TV (teevee), did you try to control the output volume with your Apple TV remote? I can’t while streaming a movie. I have to disable the output towards HDMI. Any idea? Thanks. Edit: I don’t mean to control the volume of the TV as a device, just the output towards HDMI.

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  Před 4 lety

      Off the top of my head it’s a little fuzzy. I know that there was definitely some tricks to be played to get it to output to the right targets and co trio volume. If memory serves me, I think you had to steam to the AppleTV (teevee). Then have the Apple TV also airplay2 to the speakers. It was one of the quirks that made me move in the Sonos Beam direction. Just too many caveats in its current form. Rumours that iOS14 is going to re-architect the Airplay2 feature to be more of the core OS. Hopefully that will helps a lot. Let me know if this helps? I’ll see if I can dig a bit into this but because of my setup it requires tearing some things apart. :)

      Probably not - your TV is most likely a Airplay2 target, not an Airplay source. you could use an iPhone/iPad to play to both the TV and the Sonos at the same, time, but your TV can't be used to push audio to your AP2 speakers.

      @@giovannibenuzzi9950 I'm not sure if I really have a solution for you here. This article explains how you can play the Apple TV Audio through the HomePod (in your case I'm guessing Sonos Speakers).
      support.apple.com/guide/tv/play-audio-throughout-your-home-atvb50fb1c50/tvos
      Try this important instruction: "Before you start, make sure you’ve assigned a room to your Apple TV. Your HomePod (or HomePod stereo pair) must be connected to the same network and set up in the same room as your Apple TV 4K using the Home app on an iOS, iPadOS, or macOS (running Catalina or later) device"
      The second option seems to be to connect to the Airplay Speakers. More info under this title- "Control audio on multiple AirPlay 2-enabled devices"

      That does sound right to me! One thing to be aware of is that the Apps on the AppleTV have to support Airplay2 as well as far as I’m aware. Netflix and AppleTV content should be good for sure but you may run into issues with some other apps. We had a couple of local TV station apps in Canada who didn’t have support but I’m assuming most major streaming players should be fine.

    If I play music on iphone to paired sonos ones
    Do I have to register sonos again on Apple tv (to use airplay sound output)?
    If it's not, what happens if I am playing music through Iphone, and Apple TV try to sound out to same sonos speakers?
    I think that the music would pause. But not sure.....

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  Před 5 lety +1

      No apology necessary! Your English is great. This is a bit of a tough question. So let’s split it I to parts. You will not have to REGISTER the Sonos on the AppleTV abut you may have to re-connect it. I hope the difference makes sense. If you play from your phone to the Pair I’d Sonos devices, the phone will be holding the Sonos connection so the TV swill just play out through it’s normal speakers. The other thing to be aware of is that Apple l, for some reason, made the Airplay2 part of the app and not the TV. There are some apps that don’t support the Airplay2 function so wont play through the Sonos. The way I dealt with that was putting a Sonos Beam into my setup which connects through HDMI. By using the TV audio output directly it grabs all audio and you don’t have to wonder whether a new app has the Airplay2 function in it. Hope this helps!

    Does anyone know of a way to make an iPad always play to a airplay2 speaker? I have an iPad in the kitchen that I never to play through it’s internal speaker. Activating airplay all the time to get it to play through an external speaker is not fun.
    Same goes with another iPad with a bad internal speaker. It would be nice to have that always play through an external speaker instead of having to swipe up and send to a HomePod.

      Unfortunately, I don't know of a way, at least yet ( July 2018 ) to force the iPad to play to a specific audio target. Assuming the iPad's mounted or at least always within range, you might have better luck connecting it using Bluetooth audio which does seem to retain the connection over time. Being able to select a default audio source for the iPad or iPhone would definitely be a great feature I'd love to see too. As time goes on, lots of repurposed iphones/ipads could stay useful.

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  Před 4 lety

      Hey @Levi. - Short version - Yes. If you setup the two Sonos SL's as a stereo group in the Sonos App, they will be exposed as a single Airplay2 target. You SHOULD be able to play to them from most ATV apps, but it does need to be implemented in the app itself ( Netflix, and any Apple content are fine ). Personally, I made the move to the sounder because of the inconsistency of the AP2 experience. Certain apps didn't support it yet, as well, I also wanted something that would work for all the content connected to my TV ( game console, FireTv, etc... ( which of course the Airplay2 solution won't work for. As a heads up, it can be inconsistent so you may have to reselect the target when moving between shows or apps. But in general, it does work and it sounds great. There are rumour that Apple is aware of the issues and is addressing them in tvOS14 but it's entirely possible that those are just rumours. Buy on what's today and hope for the best. So in wrap up - Does it work? Sure. Is it Consistent? Nope. Is it consistent enough? Probably.

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  Před 5 lety +2

      Is your ATV connected via WIFI air Ethernet (cable). Could be that the dessyncronization is due to the delay from the wifi. My ATV is cable connected so I never noticed a delay. I did have a noticeable delay/Echo with the Sonos Beam though u TIL I plugged it in too. Could be that your wifi is causing some issues with the audio. You might want to try plugging the ATV aim and see if it resolves at all. Strangely, the ATV to Homepod with Airplay2 was fine. The issue was just the Sonos Beam. Once I plugged the Beam into my network. No more issues.

      Hey Tony! I haven’t personally encountered this but if memory serves there was a new delay setting added in the Apple TV for external speakers that might be able to help you out here. Definitely let us know if you’re able to get it resolved and what the fix was!

      Chris Young I have to choose the JBL soundbar and HomePod. For some reason the HDMI one will give it an echo effect. 🤷‍♂️ annoying to have to do

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  Před 3 lety

      Yeah I can understand how that would be annoying. I had something similar with Sonos products. The fix for them was to plug the Sonos soundbar (Beam) into wired Ethernet directly. After that things worked properly. Good luck!

    Can you stream from your Apple TV to a pair of Sonos Ones(stereo)?

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  Před 5 lety +1

      This is sort of a trick question. Let me explain Can you stream from an Apple TV to two Sonos Ones - Yes. Is it stereo? No - it’s the same stream to two different Sonos Ones. BUT... If you have the Sonos Ones configure as a stereo group (L/R pair) they will appear as a single Airplay2 target in the AppleTV airplay list. The Sonos then takes care of the stereo signal portion. Hopefully this makes sense?

      @@Homekitgeek Thank you so much. It makes perfect sense. I have one Sonos One and I was wondering about that. I´m perfectly fine with the default Netflix app (4k) from my tv, but, my tv (or any tv) won´t have Airplay. So I´m considering buying a Apple TV 4K and a second Sonos One and create a Stereo Pair. I know the stereo pair works for apps like Spotify but I didn´t know the pair showed like a pair to Apple TV, enabling stereo mode for Netflix playback. Thank you again. And sorry if I didn´t make myself clear, because english isn´t my first language.

      @Homekitgeek  Před 5 lety

      No problem at all! One thing to watch out on the AppleTV SI’s that not all apps support playing to Airplay targets. On the bright side, Netflix does support this so you should be ok. :). And your English is very clear it’s just a tricky question. What’s your first language?

      @@Homekitgeek Portuguese (Brazil). I'm considering my options since Apple TV would be used for Netflix only. It's a bit pricey just for Netflix. I moved to Android two months ago, but I still have my 8 Plus in case I choose to go this way (Airplay). The other option is a sound bar from LG (SK9). But with that I'd miss the chance to stream directly from my phone. There's no perfect choice, I suppose hehe. What would you choose? Extra Sonos One + Apple TV or the sound bar?

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  Před 5 lety

      LOL Que beleza! Pra mIm eu acho que o Beam ou o Playbar e o melhor. Eu falo também. ;). The soundboard is probably the better choice in that it uses HDMI ARC from your TV so you’ll get the benefits regardless of if you’re using an AppleTV, DVD player, cable box or anything else plugged into your TV. With the ATV + Sonos One you will be limited to the specific apps on the ATV that support AirPlay and the just the Sonos music sources. hope this helps!

    Do this setup also works when watching TV? I’m wondering to have two Sonos One for music and movies connected to an Apple TV via AirPlay 2

    • @Homekitgeek
      @Homekitgeek  Před 4 lety +1

      This will work but only for content that’s played through the AppleTV - or more accurately for apps on the AppleTV which support airplay2. If you’re looking for a solution for the TV and any audio sources finding a sound bar, like the Sonos Beam for instance, that supports HDMI ARC (audio return channel) is a much better solution in my opinion. I tried the Airplay for a bit and then decided to upgrade for better sound and flexibility as the Sonos Beam ARC allows me to use audio from any source connected to my TV.

    Too bad you can not set AirPlay as default audio output. Apple TV always switches back to physical Apple TV output, which is really annoying. I got a setup of two Sonos One speakers and every time I want to watch TV, no matter if it's CZcams or Netflix or whatever, I have to go to the settings and switch to Airplay audio output manually.

      Definitely agree. This behaviour pushed me to pickup a Sonos Beam. There are rumours that iOS14 will “fix” this behaviour. Hope mould will have more details soon!

      Hey Do0rBellsUp. Not 100% clear on which setting you're referring to here. If you're saying the Airplay2 is not showing up I'd suggest you make sure you're speakers and appleTV is connected to the same network as the first step. Do you have the Airplay2 speakers added into Homekit?

      Ok! This helps - The Sonos Play:1 is the older model of Sonos speakers and unfortunately, didn't get the Airplay2 updates. Short version is that you're not going to be able to do this with the setup you have.
