From Wikipedia:
Interstate 85 (I-85) is a major Interstate Highway that travels northeast-to-southwest in the U.S. state of Georgia. It enters the state at the Alabama state line near West Point, and Lanett, Alabama, traveling through the Atlanta metropolitan area and to the South Carolina state line, where it crosses the Savannah River near Lake Hartwell. I-85 connects northern Georgia with Montgomery, Alabama, to the southwest, and with South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia to the northeast. Within Georgia, I-85 is also designated as the unsigned State Route 403 (SR 403).
I-85 in Georgia usually travels roughly parallel with the route of U.S. Route 29 (US 29). However, from Atlanta northeast to South Carolina, I-85 ventures away from that route, traveling about halfway between US 29 and the combination of US 23 and US 123.
Within the City of Atlanta, I-85 has a concurrency with I-75 known as the "Downtown Connector". After splitting from Downtown Connector, it is known as Northeast Expressway until its junction with I-285 (The Perimeter).
From LaGrange, I-85 heads northeastward towards Atlanta. Before reaching Atlanta, the highway crosses the CSX A&WP Subdivision twice (in the Grantville area) and passes through the suburbs of Moreland, Newnan, Fairburn, and Union City. The highway then intersects I-285 at its southwest end in College Park. This interchange is one of the most complex interchanges in the country (I-285 and I-85 stay side-by side through the interchange, which actually has two parts. The interchange also features many other, not as important local access roads at the same time), meanwhile providing access to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. I-85 then runs along the northwestern boundary of the airport in East Point, providing access to the domestic terminal. (This airport is bounded on all sides by I-85, I-75, and I-285, all of which provide highway access to the airport.) I-75 services the International Terminals of the airport, which are located on the east side of the airport.
At the southwestern edge of Atlanta's city limits, I-85 merges with I-75 to form the Downtown Connector, which is 12 to 14 lanes wide. At the southern edge of downtown Atlanta, this freeway has an interchange with the major east-west Interstate Highway, I-20. The two freeways then skirt the eastern edge of downtown, running due north, passing through the Georgia Tech campus and the Atlantic Station section of Atlanta before the two highways split, with I-75 exits via the right three lanes and then heads northwest while I-85 uses the left three lanes and then heads northeast.
Heading northbound after the Brookwood Interchange with I-75, I-85 is routed along a ten lane wide viaduct from the Buford Highway Connector (exit 86) to State Route 400 (SR 400, exit 87). Continuing northeast of Atlanta, I-85 continues through the northeastern suburbs, bypassing Chamblee and Doraville, where there is another intersection with I-285 (nicknamed Spaghetti Junction). The Interstate then travels through the northeastern suburbs of Atlanta, including Lilburn, Duluth, Lawrenceville, Buford. The Interstate has freeway interchanges with SR 316 in Duluth and I-985 in Suwanee, which provides a link to Gainesville. I-85 eventually leaves the Atlanta metro area as the highway continues into the rural parts of northeast Georgia. At Lake Hartwell, which was formed by the damming of the Savannah River, I-85 crosses the Savannah River into South Carolina.

The downtown skyline really does make you fall in love. I wish it wasnt so expensive to get a view like that
Well, it is cheaper to get a view like that in ATL than New York City, though the average median income is higher there
After seeing this, and having driven this route perhaps 2000 times; this must have taken place on a Sunday morning between 8am and 10am, the only time traffic is like that in Atlanta. You notice the shadows from the vehicles are in the right, sun rises in the east, and car is going south.
Bingo! Took about 3 days to time this where the sun wouldn't be glaring too much and the traffic wasn't crazy.
The Downtown skyline is just absolutely beautiful ❤️
I second that!!!!..second only to ours..nashville tennessee..😊❤
Just in case anyone is interested...Right after that first sign for I-75 when the skyline is visible (at 10:39 ), that is where the 85 bridge caught on fire and a huge section of it collapsed a couple of years ago. I could actually see the fire from my house and heard the collapse. It was beyond a nightmare for traffic for a couple of weeks until people adjusted their time of travel and figured out alt routes. I needed to make a 5min trip to Home Depot the next day that took me a hour and a half to get to (and I know every back road...they were all gridlocked...quite miserable).
Welcome to Atlanta everybody
I love ATLANTA ❤️
Me too.been thru there.gotta love that skyine.gotta love our boys.go atlanta braves.woohoo.⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️

That brought back lots and lots of memories thanks for sharing this!
I miss my hometown. Lived there 50 yrs. Wish I was back but Im in Albany
Why did you move so far into the country? Even though Albany is technically a big city in Georgia
@@thesharinganknight9859 a long story
My beautiful hometown however, the Downtown Connector I-75 I-85 is usually stand still traffic. It’s not always this calm when you drove through.
Yeah it took me a while to time this for decent traffic and also avoiding heavy sun glare.

I been to Atlanta
Everyone needs to take a trip to Atlanta and see the Bluff a world wide attraction.
😂😂😂
I don’t know when you are driving this route, but I live nearby and drive often I have never seen the interstate with this few cars.
Yeah It took me a while to time it to where the traffic was reasonable and the sun glare wasn’t too overbearing.
@@MileageMikeTravels what’s the best time to go through it to beat rush hour traffic ?
@@santuanwells6712 Sunday or Saturday morning. Or extremely early morning on a weekday.
Trees are good to have inside the city and outside. I live in Stone Mountain and we have trees.
Atlanta is nicknamed "The City in a Forest" because of all its trees while most cities tear all of it down to build indrustial buildings.
You should do I-20 West in Atlanta, Georgia, if you haven't left Atlanta yet.
Didn't have time on this trip. I'll get it eventually.
Waiting for the day you drive through Thomasville georgia
Nice ride
ATL has way too many trees.
I love that
@@sharonrivers1347 too many trees in a storm prone area. Imagine the mosquito's, insects, bugs...
Imagine the amount of Damage that could be sustained in a bad storm.
I been to ATL since 2016
Atlanta is in the middle of the very dense Piedmont forest. All those trees were there for atleast a million years before people arrived.
@@TheAnomics1imagine how much pollution and heat because the lack of trees, think. It’s better for the air and environment.
I live in Flowery Branch ga and drives that stretch about 30 times a year mostly to ATL airport. I thought the Atlanta skyline was kinda cool but when I visited Philly earlier this year, I was very impressed with their skyline. Makes Atlanta looks Third World
It’s because almost every other cities skyline is close together. And Buckhead is a continuation of the skyline. If you want to see how long Atlanta‘s skyline real is go on the west side of I-20 near 6 flags

Mike, why do you start videos of the Atlanta area from well within the developed area, but other metropolitan areas you seem to start them way out in the rural areas? From where you started this video, you missed about 27 miles of suburban area throughout Gwinnett County. That is, developed parts of the metropolitan area. It seems strange to start a video of the Atlanta area from near Jimmy Carter Boulevard, as stated, that's almost 30 miles from where the suburbs start, and is about 40 miles from where the exurban areas start.

I want to go there on my birthday 🥳
Go for it bro! I did it this year along with going to Dragoncon

Half-ass built highways in USA....looks like they don't even re-paint the white and yellow lines on the roadways.
there would be far fewer accidents on the Interstates if only the left lane was allowed to overtake
I wanna see you drive on 85 from Charlotte to Atlanta. Or vise versa.
Maybe when the construction on 85 is done in South Carolina.
@@MileageMikeTravels I guess that'll be a while
Great video interstate mike found another bad driver at 20:24 seems like the bad drivers are evolving
