The sudden view of downtown as you're exiting the Fort Pitt tunnel has gotta be one of the most spectacular highway scenes in the country. The only downside is the traffic before the tunnel, because for whatever reason we here in Pittsburgh always like to slow down before we enter a tunnel 🤷

The Sudden View of Downtown Pittsburgh also comes with the Fort Pitt Bridge in view too. A good combo.

that 376 should be at least 3/4 lanes tho - very outdated....I can see why there is always traffic plus with the bob-and-weave movement with many drivers trying to get in lane and get across to Route 51 there is too much cross flow and again two lanes are really antiquated - time for a serious upgrade Penndot!

@@matthewgarcia1499 If you think this is bad you should see I-76 through Philadelphia.
Very unlikely for any widening to be done, with the space constraints. Maybe ramp reconfigurations or electronic traffic management systems, but the tunnels and major bridges will remain as they are, I think.

Gorgeous drive. Thank you for posting it. The highways may be older, but the traffic moved very well except for approaching the tunnels, which is not uncommon.

Welcome to my hometown (although I realize you were here several weeks ago)!
Let's see if I can remember some of these details. I-376 didn't extend west of downtown until relatively recently. The roads were all there, but the designations were different. Business 376 was Business PA 60. Prior to the opening of the current airport terminal, it was just PA 60 as that was the road to the old Greater Pittsburgh International Airport terminal. The stretch from the end of Business 376 to 22/30 was PA 60. The stretch from the meeting with 22/30 to I-79 was only 22/30. The stretch from I-79 to the Fort Pitt Bridge was part of I-279. We typically just say the Parkway West for the section west of downtown and Parkway East for the section east of downtown.

I sure did enjoy the ride today, I like tunnels. When I was a teen, my boyfriend and I use to go to the Pittsburgh Airport and watch the jets take off. I use to live in East Liverpool Ohio, we were 42 miles from the airport. By the way, I was a 16 year old teen 55 years ago . ☺️

The problem is the cost of rebuilding these old highways (sometimes in the billion dollar range) plus often knee jerk opposition to any improvements that involve widening these same highways

4:45 PA 60 in Crafton has one of the strangest split alignments around. I had to loop it to be even comfortably close to consider it clinched.

This route takes you to the Lincoln highway and towards Lancaster. Interestingly enough after the downtown area you would be in Erie and bridgville. The fort pitt tunnel is magnificent as well. This highway also enters interstate 76. Great view of downtown Pittsburgh

And you thought Louisville was bad with their 4 lanes lol
I knew Pittsburgh didn’t have wide freeways but!! That was kinda crazy leading up to the tunnel! Will also be visiting Pittsburgh for the first time next week.. (Madonna concert:)
Going to be doing my research sometime this week, with their traffic patterns (cause I already KNOW traffic is a BEAST) in that city! Because of the population of the metro, and that infrastructure (KNOW that does not cut it!!)
And I’m not about to drive all the way from Lexington to just sit in stand still traffic in that tunnel! I wanna drive through it just like you did lol
    #safetravels Mike!

Since the concert is on a weekday, you'll likely be in traffic unless you go around the tunnel--and there could be traffic around the West End Circle too.

Move to Pittsburgh. Must love tunnels. There are great views along many of the roads into town. I guess Abe Lincoln (US 30) just didn't want to leave his buddy William Penn (US 22). This freeway dates to the 50's and was originally designated I-70/US 22/US 30. The current I-70 was I-70S and PA 71A to the Turnpike. There isn't much space available to widen it.
