I’ve been listening to a book called The Way We Never Were, which dismantles beliefs like that and exposes the terrible things we don’t have to put up with anymore. You’d think it’s a very modern book, but it was written in 1992
I started watching it. I downloaded the app. Very few commercials, BTW, which was nice.
The only people who say how great the US _used to be_ are white, land-owning men.
History does repeat itself. Check out PBS American Experience "The Gilded Age" and "Nazi Town USA" to see the scary unspoken comparisons to today in wealth gap and flirting with fascism...

About time this is finally talked about what the government has done to indigenous people it should be taught in school along with black studies as a mandatory and complete American history education
Absolutely. As a side note, my 14-year-old grandson in Oregon *is* learning Native history, and I'm thrilled to see this.

First time I ever saw John was in the awesome movie "Too Wong Foo.." He was the most amazing actor and I would never forget him after that.

And now, there is federal law that children services must talk with families about whether or not they are part of a Tribe or Nation, and then, if the answer is yes, they must contact the tribe and let them decide how they want to handle the issues with their tribe members and their children. That's HOW vile and despicable our government headed by politicians of a certain gender and hue along with their same gender and hue Big oil execs have been.
I worked with these cases for six years. The unfortunate part is that states can get away with applying the law in the way the state wants. When I worked in Iowa, they were dedicated to following the law as written, and I was part of that. Once I moved to Oregon, and there are lots of tribes here, they kind of don't bother a whole lot with ICWA from what I can see. I know that a few years ago (under the former administration) there were lawsuits to dismantle ICWA from even existing.

I was a foster parent and was very surprised in my training when we were told that the roots of the foster system was taking Indian children away from their families. It's heartbreaking and we need to know about it so that we can heal and repair. Thank you again!

I really immersed myself in Native history and never heard about this. I even worked for ten years on a reservation, with child welfare cases, on the same reservation where they designed the ICWA law. I'm pretty stunned. What I haven't heard mentioned in public yet, or "exposed," if you will, is what's been going on for decades at Boys Town in Omaha, along the same lines as the Matt Gaetz story -- only way worse.

I loved John Leguizamo in every role he played, especially in Spawn, but, if this is a somewhat accurate portrayal of what we went through and are still going through, I will have to buy or make something for this guy in appreciation. If there is too much fiction or dramatization, I'm still going to keep him up there. We smell bullshit with our eyes and taste fake noises in our fingers. I'll enter optimistically, but Iktomi holds only hands with Coyote and finds trouble so we'll see.
