  • Woodchucks are the third largest rodent, just behind a porcupine and a possum. Dr. Russ shares his latest woodchuck harvest in his backyard with viewers today. These rodents whistle to each other. They actually have nothing to do with wood or chucks. Their name comes from the earliest Algonquin Indians, which referred to “digger.” They actually go by many names in America including ground hog, whistle pig, whistler, thick wood badger, marmot, and red monk. Dr. Russ had just sighted in his Hatsan AT44 long QE air rifle in 25 caliber, after installing a regulator. While he had sighted in this rifle at 65 yards, he estimated a holdover of two mildots at 92 yards and killed this destructive rodent in one shot to the head.
