Going back later is literally the best. It’s more of an appreciation of what you are learning and life experience to relate it to. I am so much more of a scholar as an adult student rather than traditional. Also had better grades because I wasn’t wrapped in the social scene.

Please don't be intimidated, I'm going back at 26. One of the hardest lessons I'm learning is the fact that "I have time". Your doing great. The first step is always intimidating but I empathize with people that start later and only start when they are ready. Just don't let other people project their insecurity onto you. You get respect from people but some are just the most discouraging simply because they aren't at the same point of life that you are. You got this!

This inspired me, because I was getting discouraged that all my classmates were graduating at 22. And yet I was 22 and still a sophomore. Now I’m 23 and staying on campus. I still feel like I’m behind, because I will be graduating at 25. I wish I took my freshman year seriously, but I have to remind myself God was taking me on a journey and building my character. Because who knows what would have happen if I graduated early I probably mentally, emotionally, and spiritually stuck, and that could have cause me to be more depressed and oppressed. Now I’m 23 I’m more mentally, emotionally, and spiritually mature. And I’m finally get to experience the college life

I'm STILL in school at 23 for political science, started at 17 went straight through. I got BURNED OUTTTTT. I was withdrawing many semesters, my mental health suffered. I finally got help with my anxiety by learning that I am neurodivergent, it made so much sense why I didn't fit in socially, why I'm super smart but could no longer focus and comprehend the way I could. I knew it was bad when it started affecting my grades. I used to feel embarsed that its taking me so long but now I'm proud I hung in there. I'll most likely be graduating at 24, but that's okay. As long as I am going to school working at my own pace and finally getting the accommodations that I need. Go for it you know yourself and now you know what you need and what can you can handle.

    • @ii954

@@PamBeesly9545 your never too old for college and especially at an HBCU there’s students there from 24-27 and I met one lady in her 30s. One shocking thing is that a lot of people have kid’s already, like 18-19 years old but still not married.
I’ll say about HBCUs it is nice to have the experience of being surrounded by black culture BUT with that comes both good and bad experiences. On TV we usually see the best parts of black culture in HBCUs like: a sense of community, there’s no need to code switch, and a chance to meet other black people the same age. BUT With that: The schools are usually in “the hood” so there is things like homophobia, judgement between black folks, and drug use.
Overall it is I guess worth it, cause when I did go to a PWI I assumed the grass was greener on the other side so I had to see it for myself. But I would definitely say it’s important to find genuine people (all skin folk ain’t kin folk) that have good intentions. And to enjoy the experience for what it can offer. But it’s actually better to go when your a little older like we are because with all of the I guess hood culture there it’s very easy for someone who is younger and naïve to get caught in the wrong crowd.

If you want to work in film for a studio, as someone who majored in animation and kind of has some experience with it, I would very strongly recommend working as a production assistant for a personal assistant to the director. These are entry level jobs, no schooling is required, and the film industry really is who you know over everything, so use those jobs as an opportunity to get to know and make your name relevant to as many people as possible. Doing that while you're in school would be a great combo if you can manage it. If you want to work independently that's a whole other piece but for studios that's what I advise

And I think this is a perspective from people who have not gone to university and do not understand ALL the different benefits/difficulties of education that is different from self-guided study. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. You made a great decision, Kai!! I am 27 and in college for my second BA! It is a little challenging to find community and feel a sense of belonging in general while majority of the people around are way younger than me but I was able to make very good friends and we connect to each other regardless of the age gaps! It is very nice to go back to college a little later than "average" because I truly value education and what I want to do in the future is much more clearer than when I was working on my first BA , so I am more responsible for my educational experience now and I truly appreciate and enjoy the process of learning.

6:39 that’s so true about losing your passion for what you love especially for creatives. I always wanted to do either computer science or dance and because I love dance so much plus everyone was fighting it out; I chose to do a dance as my first degree because I was also afraid of starting CS and stop being because it was too hard.
When I got to year 3 last year I was so close to dropping out because I lost my love for dance; initially because my major is in education and not performance which was what I wanted to do but because everyone said education is a sure career🙄
Now I’m about to finish my final year and sometimes I still question why am I still here doing this.

I hear myself in some of the words you say and it’s refreshing to know I’m not alone in my view on the complexity of life. I find it hard to express myself this way, so thanks for your authenticity and transparency. I think hearing that line really struck a chord with me in the most liberating way.

I’m getting my degree in business administration & getting into a program to get my bachelors & Masters together

I am at community college aswell! I graduated from highschool 6 months early to take a break from school and really think about what I wanted to do. Since I did dual enrollment I already had college credits so I am back in school for my AA so I can complete those credits and get some basic education in if I ever decided to go for my BA!! I Started watching Kai when she started college, so it's cool to be going to school at the same time as her.

The #1 lesson to learn and really take in for life is that it's unpredictable. You have to learn as life comes along and look for answers day to day. When I graduated from high school my grades were terrible. I went back to college at 25 years old to a community college, then got accepted to MIT and graduated with a CS degree.

You and I's experience is extremely similar. Went to a competitive predominantly white high school, made a lot of decisions based on societal pressures and ultimately ended up burning out. Which caused me to flunk my classes and lose my scholarship. I left college after 1 year in Spring of 2021, this past fall I have start school again at a community college in a degree program I actually like, not what might be the most lucrative, but because I actually like it and it is so freeing and I am so much more willing to keep up with my work. Taking that time for myself has been so eye opening and ultimately what I needed and I am still in that time of taking classes focusing on myself. I honestly wish I would have taken a gap year. Congrats on starting classes again! Learn a lot, stay focused and keep on working on you while also getting that degree

I’ve been trying to slow myself down as weird it sounds 😭, I’ve been trying to get into nursing school and after getting rejected to one school, I was trying to find every school that could accept me. I thought about joining a private school that would cost me like 41k for my degree and I’m just like I don’t want to be debt in that long but I also just want to finish school. I’m only 20, and it’s so stressful just trying to figure out my future. I don’t want to end up like my family and be in debt forever but I don’t want to keep waiting for it to start.

Was just thinking about you Kai, and I'm glad I clicked on this video because I've been in a really bad state of comparison recently since I work a "regular" job now after graduating and getting my degree...and the age range of my coworkers vary, but a lot are in their early 20's while I'm turning 24 this year. I've felt bad about myself a lot, but I'm more upset that I don't know what I want to do with my life as of right now. I don't want to go into grad school because I am also in debt (student debt) and I just don't think it's worth it right now so I'm taking some time off because I need clarity before also investing and making the wrong decision or making the wrong plan. But, I'm really proud of you, you honestly made me ugly cry because I'm just so happy to see you moving forward and accepting it for what it is :') keep going Kai, I'm rooting for you! And hey community is so important I'm glad the staff so far have been good to you

Heyy girl!!! My name is Day and I just wanted to say when I found this video it was like I found another version of myself! I’m going to be 23 in June and I Went to Tuskegee university in 2018 and left, I also worked at AMC and now I just applied to Dillard to get back in school for Film. I felt where you were coming from the whole time and I do feel as though I didn’t have things figured out at 18 and I still don’t have it all figured out now, but I know where I wanna be and I know what I have to do to get there and it’s okay to enjoy the little things on the way to success! We are still young and have so much to accomplish and so much world to see and people to meet and I hope one day we encounter each and see how far we’ve come! I wish you all success and happiness ☀️✨

I finish at 27 which feels daunting but I'm now slowly starting to realize that it's kind of no big deal. As in people truly finish college at 27-29. Your 20s is such a wide and vast canvas and gives you so much time to mess up.

  • @777kristineandmoomies

im in the process of becoming a teacher and one of the things we study is conceptualizing the curriculum so that significance can be discovered by students. yes youtube can teach you the content but it will not encourage curiosity, it will not push you to closely interact with the material, and it will not demonstrate to you how to unlearn colonized concepts. at your own pace and timing, school can be so much more than a 9-5; it can be a place to cultivate your passion and community (but capitalism has impaired that for us by institutionalizing this). & i love this video because it captures so well how school should be a personal choice and done at your own pace with your own intentions because that is how school is productive, otherwise we are just fulfilling some capitalist standard.
