A restaurant called Hela Bojun was recommend to me. I heard they are serving traditional Sri Lankan Food, so I had to go and check it out. I really enjoy visiting local places, off the tourist tracks and see how the locals are having their food. I have to admit, I got a bit confused at this Sri Lanka restaurant though. Luckily there were many friendly locals to help me….

You won’t see much tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.
There will be almost daily uploads on this channel, during the next months from Sri Lanka. I will be traveling Sri Lanka, showing you around local places and try lots of different Sri Lankan food. A little insight! There's this app called "Helango" in Play Store that teaches you some essential Sinhala terms that you need when traveling, in a very nice way. (Like Duolingo) Feel free to try that. I think that would come handy when you visit more remote & local parts of the country. Love your content and humbleness! Stay safe & keep traveling! ❤

'Hela Bojun" is a food court runs by the sri lankan government to help the women entrepreneurs who can't afford a place/stall to run their businesses. all the foods they sell in this place are authentic/traditional sri lankkan food. milk rice is a early morning breakfast food that is why it was run out of early. there is a traditional tamil nutritious drink calls "RASAM'' in sri lanka looks similar to mushroom soup you drank here just like you mentioned you do with mushroom soup in germany you can pour the RASAM over your Rice or String Hoppers and mix and eat it that way. if you get a chance to visit a tamil food place i definetly recommend you to try that. nice video looking forward to your journey around rural part of sri lanka ken...

@Jo Montanee If you know how to cook rice making milk rice won't be so hard for you. when the rice is cooked just pour the Coconut milk to the rice and cook for 2 minutes in low heat (flames). your MILK RICE is ready for you you can use red rice as well but white rice taste the best (don't use expensive rice like Basmathi) and don't use kind of rice that have small grains/seeds medium and big grains very good for better taste.. i'm a buddhist too your comment brought me back to my 6th grade where i 1st learned about Enlightement of Buddha. thank you.. it was madam Sujatha Right who gave the Milk rice to Buddha.

Hi Jo, Actually the real milk rice in Srilanka is preparing with coconut milk. This suppose to be eating with local chili past called "Katta Sambol" (prepare with red chili, salt, Maldives dry fish, lemon). But many locals are eating milk rice with "seeni sambol" and "fish ambulthiyal" (google the words).
However the "Kiri Pindu" dish (Milk Rice) served to the supreme Buddha was something different as per the Buddhist teachings. It is a rice dish prepared with pure cow milk, ghee, butter, jaggery and bee honey. I have try that and it is a really yummy meal. If you planning to taste the same dish you have to ask for it specifically. But locally you'll allways find the traditional cocunut milk rice dish.

I don’t think this string hoppers kottu is taste enough as much as we normally eat in colombo ( it’s like only chopped string hoppers. They haven’t added enough vegetables).
Also, we eat kotttu with some gravy (chicken gravy) as well.

And milk rice is our national food. It's kind of a breakfast type. So it must be sold out already. It's a dish where we cook rice, salt and coconut milk together and cut into square shape pieces. It's served with Lunu miris and believe me it's so delicious. Milk rice is one of my favourites

0:15 Here's more about Hela Bojun restaurants: czcams.com/video/J5xspxZP4SQ/video.html. 💡The name broadly means: Local Food and all food are made of locally sourced ingredients.
7:42 As a local, I can confirm that "honey hopper" is just a poor translation. Kithul: Caryota urens, 🌴 Palmyrah: Borassus flabellifer, Coconut 🥥 and Sugar Cane are the species used in Sri Lanka for making treacle (depending on the region). So I believe the correct term would be "Kithul treacle hopper" or "Kithul Jaggery Hopper". And I bet these are commercially made simply using refined sugar. 😂😂
10:48 Kottu is not a short term trend. But Hela Bojun doesn't sell anything made of wheat flour because it is not a local material. So what you had was a rice flour string hopper based, healthy version of Kottu. Normal Kottu definitely tastes different.

Hela (diva , or Lak diva) is the Sinhalese name for Sri Lanka. Bojun mean food. Sometimes you might see the sign saying Rasa bojun. It means tasty food. If it is a buffet type setting you should try small portions and then have a second helping. In the towns the meals are catered for the tourists with a lot of Asian cusine but if you travel into small country eating places they serve typically local grown vegetables (not sprayed with chemicals)

This voucher system is overly complicated due to a lack of technology. In Thai food courts, you buy vouchers (customer selects value) which can be used to buy food from different stalls. The voucher is scanned each time. If you have left over balance, the cashier refunds it. The same method could be manual if the different stalls were able to stamp the voucher when an item is purchased.
