- ■ SRI LANKA, KANDY: Whenever I'm in a new city I like to check out the local markets to see what goods are for sale and how much they cost. I generally don't care much for the price (whether I overpay or not) on these occasions as I'm happy to help out the local vendors who toil there day in and day out. But even I have my limits.
After buying some socks at a pretty decent price at at the first market stall I entered I decided to go on a little shopping spree. It was then that I ran into the biggest con artist I've ever meet in any market worldwide!

where I was born and raised here in the province of British Columbia and although I have traveled to 4 other countries so far as an adult
(I am in my very early 20's and due to my siblings and I being raised by a single mother our family was never able to afford to travel anywhere while I was growing up) with all but one of those countries being located in Latin America, I must say that I have personally witnessed more scam attempts in my home country compared to when I had traveled.
I would like to clarify that the scams never happened through local businesses and stores but rather with the people who live here in their own time. Back before Walmart became more strict on their return policy as they used to blindly trust that their "customers" would be fully honest whenever returning a product WITHOUT the receipts created the problem where people would attempt to steal from Walmart and come back another day or to a different location and return their previously "purchased" item for a full money back refund... That was definitely more of a scam then what these people are doing at these markets as they do not force their customer to pay that much, the customers willingly pay the provided price and yes the customer may be paying for their item unknowingly that it is overpriced - but it is up to the customer to do their own research prior to shopping in a country unfamiliar to them.

I was getting irritated watching them try to cheat you. I understand that they have to make a living but I am sure they would do better if they don't cheat. But it's an entertainment to watch them go about their process.
Different kind of work ethic. Some people in some countries have no understanding of the outside world. They think we're all rich; hence, it's justified to rip us off. It's more of a victim mentality than a entrepreneur mentality of fairly earning an income. In their mind it's not ripping us off, it's us giving them charity. It still baffles me how some have no cognitive understanding of how income and expenses work between one country to the other, thus why they think all tourists are rich.
I really like this first shop owner who has the prices written on his merch. Now that is a true entrepreneur with a good work ethic! He gave Harald the real prices. He isn't a man looking for a donation, aka ripping tourists off.

He was basically quoting normal US/Western prices (a dri-fit shirt could easily cost in the $30 range); not that I would buy even I liked the shirt, but it's really not that outrageous in light of that. Harald's offer of 500 rupees is only 2.84 USD
I live in Sri Lanka and that t shirt doesn't even cost 10 USD. Max price would be 5 USD for that in a market like that. I'm really ashamed to see this. Happy he wasn't fooled by the scammer.
