  • Tokina Firin 100mm Macro Quick Review and test on the Sony A7rIII. This lens is $600 USD at the time of testing. Not the best macro lens for the Sony FE mount. Based on a 10 year old design.

An assessment of autofocus is meaningless in a macro lens. and you do not need to take pictures of the stars of the belt. The optical performance is always similar: 2.8 soft, 4.0 slightly better, 5.6 and 8 the best optical performance.

You didn't do a review. You harshly criticized a product that does not adapt (and will not adapt) to your needs or brand. I understand that criticism is subjective, but a review must be neutral and objective. You look more like a SONY ambassador than an expert critic.

Thank you for this video, the AT-X 100 macro has been my main lens on my Nikon for product photography, mixed feeling as I'm getting my beloved lens for Sony but at double the price. Might just get a mount adapter and use it as a manual.

Interesting as always! When will you test the Sigma 70mm macro emount? Thanks

Auto focus is not an issue for lens I am using mainly for still life. At least to me. But I just bought this lens and did quick flare test. That to me is very important as I shot a lot back light situation. And there is some strange light leak happening at the edge of frame. I can not simulate this with other my lens. And I even have a nikon version of this lens with adapter still does not produce this light leak issue. I am suspect the design is basically an old tokina 100mm with an adapter inside. So maybe that design cause some light leak. Because of this issue, I am return it.

    100% correct. A re-bodied Tokina

So this lens is now going for about $400, what is your opinion now that the price has decreased by $200?

I agree. I pre-ordered this lens and was disappointed with it. The auto focus just to bad for me. Noisy and clunky. It was the first lens I have ever returned.

Looks like a tree lupin, but I've never seen one that large before.

Interesting review, sir, but why mess with ANY other macro for the Sony a7R system than the superb Sony 90 f/2.8 G OSS Macro lens?? I'm currently using Fuji's X-T3 (with some stellar Fujinon XF lenses), and I am strongly considering going the FF route with the Sony a7Rlll (or the Nikon Z7, but just concerned with Nikkor S lens availability, as I shoot primarily wide (24, 35), macro/micro (80), and occasional short telephoto (200-300). I know the Sony System has some quite good optics in those ranges, but not sure about Nikon's roadmap availability (and obviously unknown image quality) of, say, the Nikkor S 105 Micro, and how that would compare to the known stellar Sony 90 f/2.8 Macro G OSS lens. That said, I do love the ergos and body sealing of the Z7. But at the end of the day, I'm most concerned about image sharpness and detail retention when printing large. I'm thinking both systems would satisfy in that regard, especially the Sony a7Rlll and the sony 90 f/2.8 Macro G OSS, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you!

Do you put gaffers tape over the ugly Sony logo on your camera body?

  • @dre_707
