📸📸 What are some of the things you use your macro lens for?

One simply doesn't do macro with auto focus - auto focus will hunt and hunt. Macro photographers ONLY use manual focus.

Agree. I've owned this lens for years. I was considering the new 105mm Nikon Z macro lens, until I realized that the manual focus was focus by wire. Nikon cheaped out. The thing I like best about the Tokina is that the focus ring is mechanically coupled. My Tokina doesn't auto-focus on my Z 7, but I would sooner have a mechanically coupled focus ring for macro, than a focus by wire lens with autofocus for portraits. I don't think you would use autofocus for serious macro work anyway. Here's my advice: If you can't shoot a portrait with manual focus.....well, stick with the newer lenses. If you're serious about macro, you need a lens that has an actual manual focus function. Focus by wire is a compromise, that allows manufacturers to cut costs. That may be fine for a portrait lens, but it sucks for a macro lens. I think I'll keep my Tokina. Thanks for the review.

I have and like the Tokina 100mm 2.8 Macro. The Nikon 60mm Micro is also very sharp, but has a small minimum focus distance. The Nikon 200mm f/4 AF-D Micro is the3 best macro lens for Nikon F mount, but very expensive (around $1000 good and $2000 pristine) and it is hard to find a good copy.

Phenomenal lens. Seems like it flushes out a lot when there is sun behind it though. I am still interested af in this lens. Can't wait to find it for a good deal so I can slap it on my f3 and d700.

Even though this doesn't auto focus on the Z6 I still really enjoy using it when I have the opportunity to manually focus

      Agreed!

    • @jonbarnard7186
      @jonbarnard7186 Před 3 lety +1

Agree. The manual focus on this lens works considerably better than the manual focus rings on the newer lenses, like the Nikon Z 105mm. I've had lots of experience with focus-by-wire lenses, and for macro nothing beats the good old mechanically coupled focus ring. It would be nice if the Z cameras had a mechanically driven focus screw though. But I don't think I would use it for macro. I would love a lens with the newer optics, like the 105 Z. If it had a real focus ring, I would give my Visa a workout for sure. But when it comes to macro, autofocus is superfluous, and focus-by-wire is just a way of cutting costs. It just doesn't work as well. I think the older lenses like the Tokina are better for macro work.

I know you said the new lens is basically the same as the old, I could get a clean old version for $100 less than the new. Do you think it’s worth it or should I just go ahead and buy the new version and have a new lens.

  • @Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism

Looking at the flickr pages, it looks like the lower used price nikon 105 2.8 AF (d/non-d) is a better lens. That's the true 1:1 micro lens I went with. This lens looks close, but not as nice as the nikon.

Similar to some Fujinons with the manual focus ring. Seems like a useable lens for the price. I'm all about photography for the masses, so budget-friendly lenses are a bonus.

This with the focus peaking of the z6 makes using it very easy to manual focus.

great manual lens for macro and some portraiture. I owned this lens 5 years ago for my macro shots and still using it. Worth every coin spent on it. for this price it fully overperforms Nikon or Canon native lenses. but with Nikon Z it shines with internal camera stabilization

I used an ATX pro lens and the ring to engage manual focus came unglued when I pulled it down. And when I used a 28-70 f/2.8 ATX Pro most of my images came out underexposed for some reason. So I’m kinda put off of tokina

Deciding between older pro d and the newer atx i. Anything if the $70 price difference is worth it.

Nice honest review and answers all the questions I had about the lens.
I have also purchased a couple of lenses from reviews by Mr Angry himself and have been very pleased. To 60 mm micro for one. Just diesnt have the reach for macro although in my z7 put it into DX and it's a little better.
So looking at tokina and tamron sp90.
