Wow. I got this lens today and I am blown away. I was able to find one complete with hood and lens caps for an incredible price and the clarity is unmatched by any lens I have even used. I do not find it to be loud. It focuses faster than anyone led me to believe. You were right... again. I had my doubts and yeah you were right.

On a cropped sensor comes as a nice tele and in fact i use it mostly as a tele on 80D for night time shooting. The results are TOP. I can't imagine not having it in my bag. I imported this because it isn't sold in my country. This lens is phenomenal. I never understood what people were going on about when they talked about the colour rendering of a lens, but the colours preserved by this lens are amazing.
This lens is right up there with my Nikkor 35mm f1.8 DX lens for its amazing sharpness and a depth of field which is unsurpassed by any of my other primes. I use this on a crop sensor without an autofocus drive motor and the manual focus is smooth and gradual enough to use even through the optical viewfinder and still get tacksharp images. The high depth of field range results in amazing textures which almost leap out of the screen.
Worth every penny - even with import duties and international shipping costs!

  • @walterparton6015
    @walterparton6015 Před 5 lety +2

I came across your recommendations and believe it or not the Tokina 100mm macro is a Pentax design. Pentax has used the same optical formula for the F and FA 100 macros as well as the DFA WR currently available. Someone on the dpreview Pentax forum a while back found the optical diagrams for all including the Tokina and they are identical. Ken Rockwell did a fairly recent review on the WR version. The current Pentax version has 49mm threads, metal construction, and WR, but Pentax bodies have the added benefit of IBIS. I don't think the WR Pentax has a focus limiter though, something the older models had. The Pentax 35mm macro limited is essentially the same as the old Tokina 35mm macro too which is no longer in production.

My Tokina 100mm macro just came in after being back ordered for a month. This is a awesome sharp lens which really makes great portraiture. It balances so nicely on my D700 and looks like quality design from the ground up. Its one of those lens that shoots great in the hand that you would swear it had VR, but it doesn't. Unless you must have the 85mm focal length you wont miss it. If Tokina would build all their primes like this one and at this price Nikon would be in trouble. Not all Ken's recommendations are a must for me, but this one is.

When use it, I always have feel I changed my camera, in fact if you have this lens, you don't want to buy other portrait lenses, of course other macro lenses too. OK, anyone reading this please give input: I finally bought one of these after wanting one for quite a while. Macro shots I take with it are incredible, probably the best macro shots I have ever taken with digital format, and probably the best I have taken in any format at close distances. Found it to be sharp out to 10-12 feet as well, so that pretty well covers portraits as stated here. But I just did some objective testing at infinity, and to even call it mediocre at infinity would be giving it a lot of benefit of the doubt. My 55-200 kit lens is sharper at 100mm at infinity than this is. Tests were done tripod mounted and with self timer used, so no camera shake. I tried focusing it manually to what appeared right, and also tried hyperfocal setting at f/16 (I know diffraction could be a factor at f/16, but I am talking WAY less sharp than f/16 diffraction would cause in a 100mm lens). So, does anyone know if this lens is inherently unsharp at infinity ? If so, then I can stop chasing a sharp image with it long distances. If it normally should be sharp out to infinity, then I need to figure out what is wrong. BTW- tried live view as well as viewfinder. I believe I can take my 58mm Nokton and enlarge an image from it to the same size image as taken with this 100mm and have a sharper image from the 58mm despite the additional enlargement. In any case, I will probably keep the Tokina for macro use, as it really excels there, but so far my experience has been that if I have this 100 Tokina on the camera and want to shoot something pretty well downrange, then maybe I need to attach a different lens. ADVICE ??

I'm glad you mentioned Ken Rockwell because his review was the reason I bought this lens 3 years ago and I couldn't agree more...AMAZING glass for macro and portrait, and it's built like a tank. Feels great in your hands because of the weight and the wide focus ring.

As a beginner in Macro photography with a d600 camera (has a setting to deal with manual lenses as well), which lens would you recommend ? Yes, I don't have a problem with using manual lenses. Yes, I believe Macro photography needs manual focus anyways. :)
    TOKINA 100mm 2.8 MACRO or Nikon 105mm f4 AI-S Macro

I did buy it following your suggestion - super-awesome, fantastic for portrait. Thanks. Compared to other 2.8 lenses i have, it must have a better T stop or whatever it is because it gathers much more light.

The optical design of the Tokina is similar to the Pentax D FA 100mm 2.8 Macro WR.
Tokina has a focus limiter and aperture ring, but Pentax has shake reduction in the cameras, weather sealing, is around half the weight while being made to Limited standards and uses 49mm filters.

Another one for Tokina company by your rec. I 'd never know about this lens if it wasn't for you. I am with d3300 and the autofocus do not work but i am using it more for video and when taking stills is more rewarding when i get the focus. Thank you for introducing this lens to me .

I have already bought the 55mm micro, the 135 and 28/85 that you recommended and I loved them all. You're gonna love this... I was looking for the Tokina 100mm that you always talk about, and a guy on Ebay mentioned your video's about this lens, here it is-- { I bought it following high recommendation by the "Angry photographer" youtube videos Also sharper than Nikon 105mm 2.8 VR according to DxoMark. I'm now selling it because I'm no longer using Nikon cameras! } ----- So, I just bought this lens a few days ago, it arrived yesterday and I took some test shots. I am AMAZED! I did not do any editing to them, and they still looked beautiful. I'd send you a couple pics of flowers that I took, but I have no idea how to do that. I am new to youtube. Anyway, thanks for the advice, and every lens you have stood behind, has been incredible. Thanks! I love your videos! :-)

Hi Ken, I only have three wildlife lenses and two of them are what I call true aperture lenses as they perform brilliantly at their designated widest aperture and they are cheap! The Nikkor 300 F4 AF ED and the Tokina Macro 100 F2.8D XT-X Pro. used on my D7100. Both on your "must buy" list and I'm glad I took your recommendations buying these superb performers.

I swapped my Sigma 105mm for the Tokina 100mm. While the Sigma can produce decent results in both macro and portrait, the Tokina is just better! A lot sharper. I didn't break the Sigma but definitely, the switches on the lens feel a lot weaker than the Tokina.
Its one of those things, I thought tapes where ok to listen to, until I tried CDs....

I ended up getting the 60mm 2.8D. Fantastic lens. AF is meh on it tho, so I just use manual. I don't know how the AF is on the tokina. I still want the Tokina for closer headshot type portraits. 90mm equivalent vs. 150mm equivalent. Similar to the classic 85mm and 135mm.

Hi! Interesting video. Could you please do a comparison video of Tokina 100mm f/2.8 vs Tamron 90mm f/2.8? Both lenses come for about the same price. I'm not talking about the newer version of the Tamron released this year; I'm talking about the VC one released in 2013. Also, I am not talking about the oldest one without VC. I'm only asking because many people seem to lean towards the Tamron 90mm for image quality, thought its almost unanimously acknowledged that the Tokina has better better quality. But your opinion indeed does mean a lot, and that's why I want to be sure I am making the right decision. I am going to buy one of these 2 soon as my next lens, and I've been saving up for it. I realize both might be neck and neck in terms of image quality, and we might be splitting hairs, but it is the only factor that matters to me the most. Thanks.
Also, could you please tell me how to take this kind of extreme macro shots? instagram.com/p/BHFGrUrjE5_/ Which of the 2 lenses would be better to come that close? This also matters hugely to me. Like, any macro lens can allow you to come decently close; but which one acts almost like a microscope?

Your rants live on for years, Ken. My Tamron 90mm macro lens quit on me, so I was torn between sending it in to Tamron or just trying something else. I looked at all the overpriced Nikon Micro lenses and then came upon your Tokina recommendation. I have had the Tokina ultrawide zoom (12-28) and love it. But THIS LENS is the TITS! Just as you said, great portrait lens with the added advantage of being a 1:1 macro. Thanks, brother.

So close to pulling the trigger and purchasing this lens. Very attracted to the dual purpose so I can tinker with macro for the first time but I'd likely use it for portraits in most cases. With that in mind, how does this compare to the Nikkor 85mm 1.8G just for portraits? Also, since this is so affordable to begin with, I imagine it's not worth it to buy used. Would you agree?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis

kappakumplete agreed, its so cheap new , forget about it used. its great for portraits, it is 100% up to the 85mm 1.8G for same? No, is it pretty damn close? yes. Ive had about 400+ buy same off my recommendation, nobody ever peeped back as unhappy in the least!
      winks ;)
