  • "Satu" is the Mayan word for "One" - and the Outdoor Vitals Satu pants and shorts are meant to be the only pairs you need on trail or off! Can one piece of clothing really be all that? Here I go over the features of the Satus and discuss what I liked (and didn't) about them.

Hey BP! I received the package today, I was not expecting such a generous prize so big thanks to Marc Wallace for donating and to you for doing the giveaway. Seriously awesome awesome gear, can't wait to use it! And great review on the pants, wish I could afford some. Thanks again, hope the trails treat you well in 2024!

Awesome! yeah marc really hooked the winner up. :) The pants are definitely not "budget" - but I think they'll last and serve well during their time. Hope 2024 is great for you as well!

I own 4 pair and LOVE them. I've worn them in 90 degree weather and with the vented sides, I was fine. Ive climed over rocks and slid down hills and theyve held up. Great company to work with as well. I purchased one of their packs and it's my fav. Too.

The side ventilation looks like a nice feature, but I have found that I prefer very breathable fabric for the upper/crotch area, and if I need it, more weather resistant material for the lower legs. This is because I can always combine it with a poncho or hiking kilt, if needed for rain, snow, etc.
The easiest way to do this, is to find a pair of very breathable shorts that you really like, and sew some soft velcro/hook & loop to the bottom. Then buy some specialized fabric by the yard, and sew two bottom pant legs with velcro at the top. Lighter, lasts longer, easier to put on and take off, easier to sew, and cheaper (than a high quality zipper). And this is about the easiest sewing project, besides a pillow/pillow case, that one can do.
Also potentially a lot cheaper than a 117 to 150 dollar pair of pants. I can buy breathable, UHMWPE fabric for 20 to 45 dollars a yard, and have near indestructible, super cooling (very high thermal conductivity), very light weight lower pant legs. But say I want/need some insulation, I can make a pair of pant legs with a warmer and/or less breathable material. I could bring two different kinds of pant legs for a similar weight (and price) of one pair of rugged pants, if I use the right materials.
When you can make or modify gear, the world is truly your oyster and only limited by your imagination and skills.

That's some serious DIY there. Respect! Sounds like a cottage company in the making! :)

@@BackcountryPilgrim Thanks, but the above mods are quite easy--very basic sewing.
But I am working on a truly ultralight cot system.
      Cheers

Even though I have Fjrallravens and Truewerks pants, my everyday bop around town, play racquetball pants are the Kuhl Renegade Convertibles. They have recently upgraded these pants with a hefty metal button closure at the front of the waist. Used to be a heavy duty snap.

Convertibles are hard to beat. I just got a pair of Forclaz (Decathlon) that I am trying against my Columbia and REI's.

Vietnam. Its sad but hardly anyone has their own factory anymore unless they're a small cottage company (which I love!). You might be interested in Outdoor Vitals explanation of how the outdoor industry works: czcams.com/video/6z9fon6pTjU/video.html

I think it adjusts larger with the internal strap but I'd ask before committing.

The shorts are a staple for me in the warm months. The pants however haven’t been as awesome for me. They seem to twist around the knee a lot for me.
I found the Livsn ecotrek pants in 2023 and enjoy them way more than the Satu pants. That said, the Satu shorts have been 🤌🏻

You should cut the legs off your pants and have ventilated shorts!!!
