  • Performance clothing for hiking and backpacking can be EXPENSIVE! Hiking pants are no exception. But these pants for hiking and backpacking cost me only $23 and have lasted me over a year after going on every hike and backpacking trip since I bought them. You don't have to spend $100 for great hiking pants that are comfortable, dry quickly, look great, and feel amazing! These $23 budget hiking pants are so good, I don't think I'll ever buy a different kind for as long as Wrangler keeps on making them!

    Thanks for sharing these! I bought a few of these for my teenage son to hike Cloud peak in Wyoming, about 13,200 ft. They were light weight, worked great, and were comfortable enough to sleep in! He loved them and he now wears them everyday to school!!

      That's awesome! I seriously love these pants! They are still my favorites of all the pairs I own.
      HOWEVER, I did just pick up a pair of Orvis brand from Costco for about $18. I have to say, they are COMFY! Actually wearing them right now. 😆 I don't know that I prefer one over the other. Both are excellent!

    I got tired of waiting for Walmart or Target to have my size, so I ordered them directly from Wrangler. It was only $3 more and if you get two, the shipping is free.
    They fit great and I will be asking my personal seamstress to add elastic embedded in the cuff. They seem to be a bit long, so this will shorten them up nicely to avoid snags while walking.

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety +1

      Ya, Walmart seems to be having a tough time with that lately! Good call ordering them directly from Wrangler! $3 more isn't bad at all--still less than $30 overall!
      Ya, elastic in the cuff is one of the only things missing. No skilled seamstresses at my house, but someone else mentioned that they were able to cut a hole in the cuff, put some shock cord in, and then glue the cut so it doesn't fray. I may try my hand at that because it would make these pants perfect!
      Thanks for watching! And for the tip on ordering directly from Wrangler!

    I had bought a pair of these a couple years ago while in walmart just on a whim, after the first time wearing them, I went back and bought two more pair, and just added a couple more pair this year, not because they wore out, but because I LOVE these pants. I wear them EVERY DAY. I wear them instead of blue jeans because they are SO comfortable. Also added a fleece lined pair that are great.

    I Googled "best hiking pants for the money" and one of the search results mentioned these pants or a iteration of them anyways. I bought 2 pair from Walmart and have never looked back. Mine are not baggy though so they may have changed the design a bit in the last few years as brands tend to do. They are basically fitted except for the leg opening which is a little big in my opinion, but I'm not complaining. They have enough stretch to wear with layers underneath and light enough to wear in hot weather. I wear them at work too where I have to look somewhat presentable. They are almost a dress pant so you can sort of dress them up if you need to. I've even used them as pajama pants they are that comfortable which makes them great for camping because you can literally sleep in them.
    Probably the most versatile pants I've ever owned. I probably wouldn't wear them on a concrete job or somwhere that requires VERY durable clothing, but they are quite durable outside of missions or jobs that require particularly durable materials.
    Just buy them.

    I discovered similar ones (without cargo pockets, but with bungee ankle cuffs) at Target and couldn’t agree more. They’re fantastic. I did look for more and got a couple different variations because they didn’t have the same model, and hate them. Same size as original but baggie bottoms, too long, waste too big, etc. So not all models fit the the same.

    Wrangler synthetic pants are good quality but with one con: They are always about 1.5-2 inches too long than other outdoor type pants. Only a problem if you are like me with a 30 in inseam. I have to get them hemmed. 32 in inseam and up order an inseam smaller than your normal and you're good. My $0.02.

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety

      I hadn't thought about it, but I think you are right. These do seem a bit longer than my other pants with the same inseam. Maybe it's because the crotch is so long on them? I don't know. But you're right that they do come a bit long (which can be annoying when you're hiking since they will catch dirt/mud/etc.).

  • @Doc_Watson
    @Doc_Watson Před 2 lety +6

    I've heard about those before from other youtubers and looked at them in the stores. Target also carries them for slightly more. I haven't picked them up as they felt a little heavy. Instead I picked up two pairs of hiking pants on the cheap on clearance. One pair was from a local Columbia outlet store (just over $20) and the other was a Swiss Alps brand from local sports outlet store (Sierra) for $12. The only downfall was since they were on clearance not a big choice on leg length (I have short legs) so I had a family member hem them.

    Fyi regarding the wide leg opening at bottom problem, suggest you have the legs tapered by a tailor from the knee down to say 7.5” or 8” width at bottom. Paying for tailoring is always more acceptable when the cost of the clothing is cheap ;-).

    I found this video of yours because of another video I was looking at of yours on sleep pads. I wholeheartedly agree these pants are incredible. I found them by chance at my Walmart in Canada and for $35 CDN in 2022 they are a steal. I bought the olive colour ones first and can't say enough great things about them as you pointed out and then went back and got a pair of the sand coloured ones. I have used the olive coloured ones on lots of trips in the backcountry and have hundreds of KM on them through all sorts of terrain and weather and lots of washing cycles and they are incredible even if they were double the price. I need to see if they have any other colours but I plan to get a few more and finding 32 X 30 was no issue for me and I was surprised I found the 30 inseam to be honest. At 5'8" which is not crazy short, it seems most pants start at a 32 inseam so these ones fit perfect. I also wear them under my motorcycle pants and anyone who rides will tell you jeans are horrible to ride in under your protective pants since they have no give and are uncomfortable. These were great on the trails and on the bike.

They have both adjustable leg drawcord and a built in waste belt and are tapered. No size zip pockets but the top of the pockets are cut with more of a dip which I prefer to these. They do seem to run a bit long so I sized down one of length. I found mine at a Lee/Wranger outlet for $24.99. My new favorite hiking/dog walking/fishing, knock around pants.

They're now a bit too small but I can still squeeze into them if I need some long pants and don't have anything else thats clean at the moment and I'm busy doing laundry cause #dadlife. Actually in a pair right now coincidentally for that very reason...waistline isn't too happy but its not painful since theyre wider and have that bit of stretch thats currently maxed out. I hadn't seen them at any walmart for a few years either so I thought they were discontinued. Nice to hear they weren't though

The only issue with them I have like you said is the leg opening is way too wide for my liking. I wear 0 drop style shoes and I can't wear them with these as the pant leg doesn't stay above the shoe (I end up walking on the legs) and they also make me look like a midget cause of the shoes being smaller.

    Forget the pants. That is a WICKED dinosaur shirt! I want to know where you got that! I scored lucky with some Baleaf pants on Amazon for $10 a pair, similar construction as those I think. They have stretch, waterproof on the outside, and if your legs get sweaty, the moisture will pass out. Plus, $10 (not anymore though :( must have been a sale). They also have an elastic drawstring on the ankles that can be adjusted, which came in handy on a river ford. For $23 though, I think you scored solid. Can't ask for more than that for the price... you might be getting too much actually. 😂 Comfy hiking pants are amazing. I sometimes look for excuses to get out for a few hours just so I can wear them and feel legit about it.

    I don't know if these are the exact same version I bought 3 years ago but for cheap "technical" pants they work great. Some cons I've ran into over that time though is, now that they have been through several wash cycles the spandex tends to wear out much faster, they will fit at the start of a hike and be sagging 30 mins later. The other con is the stitching for the cargo pockets tend to fail pretty quick and I almost lost some keys because of it (I just resewed the pocket shut). Otherwise these are some bomb proof pants, I have a friend who has been caving in them for a few months and even though they feel thin they haven't ripped yet and caving is usually very tough on clothing.

      If they can survive caving they can survive anything! 🤣 You are right that they seem pretty bomb proof! I wear mine for everything!

      Hey Alex! The pants are called "Wrangler Men's Outdoor Comfort Flex Cargo Pant" on Walmarts website. But I also found them on Wranglers' website. They are a little more ($29) but they have them in stock. Here's the link: www.wrangler.com/shop/mens-wrangler-flex-waist-outdoor-cargo-pant-NW780.html?dwvar_NW780_color=NW788FR

    Is there a similar pair for females?

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety +1

      Unfortunately I don't see anything on wranglers website. They just have a more expensive pair (ATG). There is a similar pair for men (also called ATG) but I haven't tried them since they are double the price.
      This has been frustrating for me as well because my teenage daughter will often come hiking with me and I haven't been able to find a budget friendly pair for her. The search continues!

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety

      Hey Antonio. I wouldn't say they are very water resistant. A new pair will be sort of resistant to light rain, I think. But anything more than that and they will just end up wet (at least that's how my pair are).

    Since most colors are out of stock at Link to Wrangler's website for a pair that are similar for $29. I can't find this exact style on Wrangler's website but these are close and similar in price: www.wrangler.com/shop/mens-wrangler-flex-waist-outdoor-cargo-pant-NW780.html?dwvar_NW780_color=NW788FR
    The style is slightly different (back pockets is the biggest change I've noticed) but other than that they seem the same.
