  • How to repair your Kohler 48 L motion sensor trash bin from Costco.
    Filmmaker notes:
When people return a motion sensor trash bin I wish I could tell them they will never be able to buy one like this again.
Please don't throw away your trash bin in the trash bin. Our landfills don't need more trash bins.

Omg! Thank you! I have been having the time of my life with this trash can! The damn plugs for the monitor going to the lid were loose! It had lights but they would just blink and never do anything!

I am so happy you diagnosed it and fixed it. Here's to many more years of happy motion sensor trash can use. If we lived closer to each other I would suggest we have a drink together and throw away the bottle caps into the motion sensor can!

Is there a way to contact you , so I can tell you what’s wrong with mine? The wire is in tack.

There is also a switch for the sensor on and off on the other side opposite where you put the batteries in also.

Mine automatically opens, but just stays open. I have to give it a little push with my hand to close the lid again. Any thoughts?

I would clean the area where the infrared sensor is located. Remove the screws that hold in the infrared sensor plate and see if there's dirt that needs to be cleaned out if there. Good luck!

@@PeterDana313 Thanks for the speedy reply. I tried what you suggested, but it doesn't close. It opens automatically just fine, but then just sits there open and makes a short humming noise when you get in range again to close it, the blue lights flash, but the lid just stays up. Even when you press on the little icon in the right front that would normally close the lid, no luck. I thought about just using it as is, but after a few weeks of walking by a stinky open trash can and having to actually touch it to close it, that's gotten tiresome, so I think I will just have to spring for a new (and much more expensive these days!) motion-activated can. Thanks anyway!

Mine does exactly the same, opens fine but then I can see the blue lights count down to the close position but fails to close. Did you manage to find a solution at all? Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I didn't. It's really aggravating, because there's probably just some little component that could possibly be replaced, if only one knew what it was. Such a waste to throw away the whole can. I'm just using mine as is for the time being. It's not a big deal for me to leave it open because it's around the corner from the kitchen counter so you don't see it unless you're leaving the kitchen. It's actually more convenient to have it open, because I can just toss things into it from the side, rather than having to walk around to the front to activate the motion sensor (when it was working). That's probably not an optimal situation if you have it in a place where people will be walking by it a lot (yucky). I'm keeping my eye out for a deal on another one, but even on sale, all of them are pretty expensive these days. I don't know why what is essentially a metal and plastic box with some minor electronics on top has to cost that much. @@nettineptune8125

(Costco was charging a much more reasonable amount for that can a few years ago -- I think I paid around $50.)

If you did everything and it's still not working it may have given up the ghost.

I know how it feels. And I'm sorry it didn't work for you. At this point you will have to manually lift the lid and close it.

Did you check the switch for the sensor? Not the unit on/off but the switch for the sensor
