The Grammys were not happy about that F.U. pause that Billy took, but he was doing it as a protest because artists accepting awards before this performance were being rushed off/played off during their acceptance speeches. Billy is a real real one. This year's performance was the first time he's attended since (30 years ago btw).
Frank Sinatra had been given a lifetime achievement award earlier in this program. He started recounting his life and path in music to that point, but the band began playing him off halfway through the speech for a commercial break. It pissed a BUNCH of people off that they could be so disrespectful of a legend like Sinatra. Billy was the first performance after the commercial break. When he stopped like that, I was on the floor laughing at his FU to the programmers.
@@strangeworldsunlimited712 Ah yes! I knew it was more specific that what I recalled in my comment. Thank you.
@@strangeworldsunlimited712 Billy would probably had done a lot more if it had only been him and the band - but clearly didn't want to "bring down" the whole ensemble with him. Such a class act in general both artistically and personality wise ❤
This performance was from the 1994 Grammy Awards. Earlier in the broadcast, Grammy producers cut Frank Sinatra off mid-speech and went to commercial. Joel stopped the song midway through to mock them for disrespecting the icon.
'94 was 30 years ago.
I was a senior in High School.
I feel so old
He just played a concert in Tampa last night. He's not even close to being done yet.
Agreed. He was great in Tampa and every other concert I’ve seen him at. No autotune here.
I agree about his composing genius…
My two favorite songwriters are Billy Joel and Freddie Mercury.🖖
Great reaction. Love how you keep bringing up Billy Joel. Those of us old enough to remember will never forget him and his greatness. Those too young to remember him much or at all will be glad they found out about him.
Ever listen to his channel on Sirius radio! Yes, he is LITERALLY a musical genius!
I love how you're giving Billy his props. Very talented man and highly deserving of his legendary status.
2024 to 1994 is 30 years...lol
I prefer to believe she was right, it’s 20 years
I was like - suddy younger😂
Britt. We DO need a conversation. There are some of his live performances that are the best choice, but some you need the original video for. This was one of those. The official video was excellent. It was less jungle and more gospel I think. Watch it and you’ll get it x
Yup….he’s a lyrical/musical genius. You should listen to the studio version after this..❤
This song takes my soul to the River!! Billy makes me
feel like I’m at a revival meeting, speaking in tongue’s
with the congregation. This Grammy performance was
when they gave Frank Sinatra a lifetime achievement
award but then played him off before he was finished
his speech! But Billy took that long pause on purpose
as a sort of back-handed sarcastic critical moment just
to make a point. That’s what the applause and laughter
was for! Great reaction girl ❤
Billy Joel sang the National Anthem twice at the Super Bowl. He hasn't done the halftime show. I would absolutely= LOVE to see Billy Joel do the halftime show!!!
Please Please Please watch ''' A Matter of Trust ''' One of his best.
Agreed. And the official video is a lot of fun to watch. Fun to watch him playing the guitar for something different also.
Yeeeesss!
You owe it to yourself to see the official video!!!
Another song with a strong back up sound is “Keepin The Faith”. If you want as you listen/watch the video keep a note pad handy to keep track of the cameos.
He did that pause and said “Valuable advertising time going by. Dollars dollars” because the year before at the Grammys Frank Sinatra was on stage talking and he was older and the Grammys cut him off during his speech to go to commercial. Billy didn’t like that, so he took that pause during his song to get back at the Grammys for doing that. The song itself was released in ‘93 and was a big hit for him. He’s said that he had this song he had dreamt in his head while in the shower and he didn’t wanna write it, but he kept coming back to it and was like “Damn I have to write this.” Great song. He performs this in every concert and it’s always spectacular.
It wasn't the year before. it was at THAT Grammys show, maybe 10 -15 minutes before Billy took the stage.
@@strangeworldsunlimited712 you’re right! I don’t know why I thought it was the year before. Makes it even better that Billy did that at the same Grammys.
@@strangeworldsunlimited712 it was immediately after coming back from the commercial break that cut off Frank Sinatra.
He is very intelligent. Few people know that he has synesthesia. He actually sees musical notes, music, and words in color.
Recently he mentioned on the Howard Stern show that he puts the music in his head then his fingers just know where to go on the piano. He said he doesn’t even know how he does it. Music runs in his veins I guess.
One of Billy Joel's current band members used to sing in a Billy Joel cover band. His name is Mike Delguidice. Billy heard him and invited Mike to join the Billy Joel Band. Mike is a multi instrumentalist and often performs Nessun Dorma from Puccini's Turandot with Billy accompanying on piano.
The crowd is confused at first because, let's face it, arias are not expected at a Billy Joel concert. Mike always wins them over. Billy has attested to this before. Mike really is spectacular.
What’s more mind blowing is that 1994 was 30 years ago. Not 20!!! Love your reactions to Billy Joel. Please react to Billy’s live performance of Scenes from an Italian restaurant from the late 70’s in I believe Long Island. It’s an amazing performance.
1982.
To see his moves try original vidoe of "Big Shot" and " It's Still Rock and Roll to Me and "You May Be Right".
I'm not a musician and I don't think I'm a nut job of a fan...but I'd agree with you 150% about his song writing ability. He's written #1 hits in doo-wop, motown, gospel, love song, piano, rock, and so many more genres. Not saying he's the only one...but VERY few artists have ever written popular AND great songs in so many different genres.
Love Billy Joel! Other great ones to react to are "For the Lóngest Time" or "Uptown Girl".
I totally remember this performance. I was in high school. I haven't seen it since but I remember specifically him stopping the song to talk about how he was wasting advertising time. I thought it was so funny
My very favorite of Mr. Joel’s songs. I think it’s because I think of my mom!! ( it was her favorite) I think the song was in Lion King!!
Very talented performer.
You must see him live. OMG!!!!
He is so versatile and surprising you dont expect some of what comes out of him😊
Your familiarity with the sound might be a recollection of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, a song he sometimes segues to after the break
Billy is the greatest of all time. I’ve seen him live 24 times. He is amazing. Going to see him again in April
Damn 24! I've only seen him 9
I’ve been binging your “Billy the Joel” reactions. Love them! I grew up with him. Consider reacting to The Stranger. It isn’t mentioned by many, but as a “good girl” my nearly 60 years, it resonates.
Definitely my favorite song of his
Since you love the backing choir sound so much, if you haven’t already done so, you really, really need to listen to Paul Simon performing with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a group of ten or so South African Zulu musicians who use voice sounds as accompaniment. Paul Simon, in his genius musical composition ability, imagined their voices combined with both modern and tribal instruments to accompany him and produce a sound never before heard in the rock genre. “Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes” and “Homeless” are must listens as you will experience something you could never have even dreamed of. Trust me, and thank me later. 😁❤️
**This Billy Joel song is very reminiscent.
I knew you would love it ❤
The official video for this song is great to watch too. It’s one of my favourites.
Gotta check out Billy's songs/videos "Only Human (Second Wind)" and "A Matter of Trust".
I’ll check it out!
If you love this one, listen to "Longest Time" and "Uptown Girl." Those Acapella songs were so fantastic!
Love ya, Britt! This is a great song and Billy has so many!
There was a time when I would wait with my VCR at the ready to record whenever Billy performed on TV, and this was one of those moments. Ahh, back in the day. No he's never played the halftime show (and he's expressed no interest in doing it) but he HAS sung the national anthem a couple of times! And of course he sounded phenomenal. He has stated that he doesn't like the sound of his own singing voice but damn, what the man can do with it....
that is why you do studio version with the accompanying video. He is my favorite but the sound quality is rough. You are great however ! thanks for all the Billy you have been doing
He just did a show with Sting
30 years.
It sounds like the lion king
you need to watch the official video of this!
They had the nerve to cut Frank Sinatra off early so Billy said FU and wasted ad time!😂 It's worth it to watch the official video. Full choir and Billy at hottest form. Billy made his point. No one cuts off The Chairman of the Board...Frank Sinatra! Seen others react to both live and video. Live is great. Video Tells the whole story. Some was cut out.
Your choir analysis was sublime.
Genious level, no doubt. This song shows Billy's range. He has an amazing catalog of hits spanning decades. Great lyricist, great songwriter, great musician. The complete package.
Billy is the man.
And Britt, I’d love to see you do a reaction to “Cult of Personality” by living colour… A serious banger…
You're probably thinking of the soundtrack penned by Phil Collins for the animated Disney movie Tarzan. A lot of similar sounds and beats. Another similar sound is Paul Simon's Rhythm of the Saints - very tribal/rock/folk sounding.
I love Joel’s method of protest to the Grammy’s! Fast forward…2024, Reba won Best Gospel Album. Queen Reba had to walk from the back to receive her award! If anyone deserves to sit at the front, it’s Reba.
Grammy’s Are A Joke.
He is fabulous live! His band is absolutely amazing. Saw him in May of 2023 at the Nissan stadium in Nashville along with Stevie Nicks. She was great too!
B.J. is a living Legend! MY LIFE is a Must Hear!!!
glad you finally did reaction to this amazing song , the official video is so much better btw
Extra ricotta for sure!!! Also, use Jimmy Dean ground Italian sausage instead of ground beef. It is sooooo good!!!
My fave Billy Joel song ... well, this and Shameless ... such a bop
Many of his songs are like tributes to different eras and genres of music. He does it so well.
7:35 you know how that song ended pretty good for the first time hearing it!
Would love to see you do We are the World again now that you've reacted to a lot of the artists you didn't know the first time around...
Billy Joel
Hall and Oats
Steve Perry (Journey)
there are a few more I think, just blanking right now, lol
Piano Man talento totale ... Altri più incensati ... Sono più che altro " personaggi" ... Ma come musicisti e performer nessuno come LUI ...... Da giovane " live" era un portento
Always love your reactions. But really appreciate your growing appreciation of Billy Joel. Like you've said before, he's not unknown. But somehow despite not being underrated, he is under appreciated. So versatile. He can wander into anyone else's genre and write a song that would fit in well, before going back to his home turf. Then, on to another genre. Deeper understanding of music that allows you to do that and even the ability to write songs that tell a story are hard to find these days in the age of everything has to fit Tik Tok attention spans.
He should do Super Bowl half time. Don't think he has. It would be a great show.
Love this song & also lasagna! You're making me hungry!😂
You are beautiful both physically and in spirit! Love your reactions, and wishing you all the best!
First time long time Britt! I know you already did it but you should check out the new official music video for Turn the Lights Back On. They did a lot of fun video tricks to harken back to his different eras and as an A-1 Billy Joel fan it tugged on my heart strings.
Billy Joel did the half time show for Super Bowl XLI (41), he also sang the national anthem at Super Bowl XXIII (23).
Saw him in concert last night in Tampa. Amazing
Billy is one of my fave artists of all time... saw him for the 1st of 8 times when I was just 17 in a community hall in Scranton, PA. That was in 1975. He's got intrumental chops, great writing talent, an interesting POV, and got better as a singer over the years as well. He wrote and sang many styles, as you already know.... and is in the American Songwriters HoF, which is a pretty lofty place.
I'd also say take a look into Todd Rundgren for innovation, quality and variety. He's done everything from old Philly Soul covers (He and Daryl Hall are old, old friends and collaborators who grew up in Philly on the Delfonics, Stylistics, Spinners, O'Jays, Harold Melvin), to prog, pop, rock, ballads. After starting out with several hits, Rundgren veered away from trying to be a radio artist. He's responsible for hit songs, like Hello It's Me, I Saw the Light, Can We Still Be Friends, Bang the Drum All Day, Love is the Answer... but also many under-the-radar great songs. He's also produced some great bands, like XTC, The Band, Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell, Cheap Trick, Hall & Oates, Grand Funk Railroad's "We're An American Band" album, Badfinger, Sparks, Psychedlic Furs (Love My Way - a great song), and the Tubes. One of his great under-the-radar tunes is "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference", which harkens back to some of those old Philly soul songs. I'd also suggest his version of "Love is the Answer" - here's the link; czcams.com/video/-6uSwhdfbBY/video.html
✌😀❤❤❤
Tickling the Ivories. From a previous Billy Joel reaction.
Genius. Yes. Listen to him talk just for a few minutes on his Sirius radio channel
One od my favourite songs of his. Billy Joel was also part of the cartoon "Oliver and Company" his big song there was "Why Should I Worry" I think you and your daughter would love to watch it. Whenever you have spare time 😅it also features Huey Lewis
My life and Matter of trust are the best songs.
He is really a complete horses you know what, but he is very gifted.
What makes you say that?
The horses part?
I believe those were the sounds of Djembe's and Bongo's
Ricotta is bomb! 🤣😊👍🏻👍🏻
1994 was 30 years ago!
lol oopsie. Math isn’t my ministry 😬
That was 30 years ago!
Also see his songs while married to Christy Brinkley.
I only have one thing to say about à mass quier
...brass band with bagpipes
I remember you reacting to a Lucy Thomas song video and i think you commented you'd love to hear her harmonise well what's stopping you. She does beautiful covers with her younger sister Martha for one i would recommend is '' The Prayer''. Hoping to see you react to more of Lucy and Martha soon.
If you want a story try Scenes From an Italian Restaurant
Strangely enough, a song you NEED to check out is the official video for his song, “A Matter Of Trust”. Came late in his career, but you’ll love the lyrics and the melody. It’s a total banger!
As far as song composition and Billy Joel goes, he's so good and so able to do anything because of paying the dues of studying music seriously and in depth, being naturally gifted and...hard work. He works hard at crafting songs with a perfectionism that you won't see in the two minute Tik Tok attention span grade songs you hear everywhere now. It's all that. And he works HARD at it, which is why he's said, he really has to work at making himself get going when he wants to write.
I would love to have you react to his song The Ballad of Billy the Kid. He was dabbling in orchestra arrangements and it's one of my favorite songs by him.
1994 was thirty years ago.
The official video is a must see!
I’ll check it out!
The official video of this song is pretty badass cool. This song has a "caesura", a completely silent pause, that he uses to great effect three times. Each one is slightly longer than the previous one and he jokes about it costing them ad money. This song has a doo-wop feel (oh Gloria). "For the Longest Time" is even better in showing that obvious 1950s influence he grew up in.
1994 - 2024... "literally 20 years ago" - thanks girl, that means I´m only 30 and not 40 years old :D
Please react to vienna by him its my favorite
You don’t know Billy until you listen to,” A New York State of mind “
Such a great Gospel sound beautifully written by a genius, as good as Lennon & Mc Cartney
Billy has another gospel sounding song with a smaller backing choir called Everybody Has a Dream.
Couldn't agree more!
I think its in Weekend at Bernies 2
you need to react to the music video for turn the lights back on
Arlo Gunthie/City of New Orleans
You need to watch," Up Town Girl" with his ex wife Christie Brinkley. You would love it. Music and style.
1994 was 30 years ago. This album was the last album he wrote .
Billy has never played the Super Bowl half time show but he has played the first ever rock concert at Yankee's Stadium, the last concert at Shae Stadium before it was demolished and 150 concerts at Madison Square Garden. Please, please take a look at this underappreciated gem (my personal favourite Billy Joel song), "Until The Night", which is Billy's ode to The Righteous Brothers (with one of the best sax solos) - (czcams.com/video/ikWH9k_39po/video.html). I hope that you can find the time to enjoy it.
If you want to be absolutely floored by the man. Give a listen to "Leningrad" by Billy Joel. (I do recommend the official video)
In my admittedly biased opinion, It's one of the best songs ever written.
Funny you should mention jungle, gorillas and trees. Go check out the album cover for Billy Joel's "River Of Dreams" LP from 1994 which this song is feature on.
Big choir, stage, performance, did you already react to I wanna know what love is by Foreigner?
Billy has sung the national anthem at the super bowl, but never the halftime show. He said recently that he has never been interested in the halftime show because its all about techno effects, dancers, etc and he’s just about the music.
