Billy has lasted so long because of his versatility. He has touched many generations. A true legend!
The Grammy’s cut off Frank Sinatra’s acceptance speech so they could go to commercial. Billy was a smart ass and stopped his song in the middle and said I’m wasting valuable advertising time, oh no what a shame. He did it in support of Frank and to protest them having cut off Frank’s speech. Said you don’t cut off the chairman of the board.
In my lowest moments, this song comes out of the black and sings in my heart. I couldn't be more grateful.
In the early '90s, my grandpa visits a friend's farm (Horton's farm) in Glastonbury Connecticut.
He hears they're filming parts of the River of Dreams music video inside the barn and goes over there for a visit. He proceeds to chat up Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley.
Keep in mind, my grandpa has no idea who they are. He calls my mom, living in New Hampshire at the time, and tells her about the experience. She is understandably livid and asks him,
"Dad, don't YOU KNOW who BILLY JOEL is?
He says,
"No, but his wife was awfully nice!"
My mom tells me this story years later, and is shocked at how clueless he is about the cultural zeitgeist.
Some people are just in the right place at the right time, I guess.
Billy could sing any song and sound terrific . I loved this song and the background voices fantastic

Billy wanted to go in a different direction on this album and succeeded
Backing vocals are 5 men (an actual gospel choir) and Crystal Taliefero. This is a gospel song. The "Valley of Fear" is from Psalms.
The woman painting in the video is Christie Brinkley, who painted the album cover.
This was Billy Joel's final album to date (apart from a CD of classical piano compositions by Billy on which he himself did not play). This, the title track, is in the style of the Four Seasons; he had earlier written and recorded For The Longest Time, in a similar style. Billy certainly was a chameleon. On River Of Dreams (the album) there are also tracks where he sounds quite a lot like Cream-period Eric Clapton. But my favourite track from the album is Goodnight My Angel, a lullaby that's reminiscent of classical composers like Schubert. I think, Derek, you would enjoy that one. (In a similar vein lyrically, check out Michael Buble's Forever Now, a song Michael found so intensely personal he never sang it again after his demo that ended up on his Love album...)

Adore 'River of Dreams' as well as many other of his songs. Billy Joel's heritage is Jewish. He doesn't practice religion. But he has prefered and interested in Catholicsm.
