Yeah, I hate it when the kids think that Elton was responsible for all the music. Yes, he was a great performer, a good piano player and music writer, but I always loved the lyrics - done by Taupin - the most.
About 25 yrs ago me, my mom and my wife went to see Elton. Right before show was to start, he came on stage, and he said he had good news and bad news. He said, "The bad news is that my band and their instruments had a problem and never made it" Then he said, "But the good news is you have me and my piano for the next 3 hours".
Most people like and respect EJ, regardless of their religion or political affiliation. He has always respected everyone back. Rush Limbaugh(famous conservative) invited EJ to sing at his wedding and EJ accepted. Things havn't always been how they are today.

What shocks most of us older folks is that you never heard this song before. Ewan McGregor shocked me with his singing voice when he sang this in the movie "Moulin Rouge". "Tiny Dancer" and "Candle in the Wind" are other must listens.
Sir Elton actually got married to protect his career from the rumor mill. I actually don't know anyone who could be openly gay in 1970.
I really liked Ewan's version of this song and was also surprised at his singing voice in Moulin Rouge.
Elton's lyricist partner in song-writing, wrote these lyrics when he (Bernie Taupin) was just 17 years old. Elton has said in interviews that as he's aged he's increasingly amazed at how beautiful of love song such a young & inexperienced person could ever write. Magic! The whole song came together, lyrics & music, very quickly.
One of the most selfless lyrics ever written: "how wonderful life is, while you're in the World." He could have said life is wonderful when I'm with you, or life is wonderful when we're together, or talk about how you hold me etc.. Instead he says that no matter where you are, regardless of if I'm with you or not, even if I never see you again, this World is a better place just because you are in it somewhere, and knowing that you are present in this World, somewhere out there, makes life wonderful for me. 🥰 Oml I'm gona cry too lol

Other early songs by Elton John you’re going to want to find our “Levon,’ ‘Tiny Dancer,’ ‘Bennie and the Jets,” “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting,’ ‘Funeral for A Friend’ and “Goodbye Norma Jean” which he wrote for Marilyn Monroe, but sang for Princess Diana at her funeral. Elton John has one of the deepest catalogs of great music of any artist in the Rock era. You owe it to yourself to do a deep dive.

@@Ray_____ It's a fact that Bernie wrote this song (Elton himself said it) and he wrote most of Elton's songs. I'm not sure why Elton would say that and credit Taupin with writing the lyrics on all of his hits when it's not the case, and I'm not sure why some people have to swear the sky is red when it's blue just to draw attention to themselves. You just keep smacking that head, it might just get some part of it working one day.
"Your Song" was his first major hit (#8 in the USA). He was part of the whole singer/songwriter trend of those years. Like Carole King, John wrote the music and someone else, Bernie Taupin, wrote the lyrics. That platonic partnership lasted for decades with much success. Elton was still publicly closeted at the time. He was 23 or so (and had his own hair). Judging by his early songs and shy delivery no one guessed that he'd become such an exceptionally flamboyant stage performer within just a few years.

FUN FACT. His real name is Reg Dwight and his Uncle played in English football's F A Cup Final in 1959 and scored an early goal and then broke his leg later in the match.
I saw him play, in later years for my team and his name was: Roy Dwight.
Went to a concert of his just him and his piano he sang non stop except drinking some water for over 3 hours. Elton is amazing.

I think you'll love Elton singing "Benny and the Jets" on Soul Train back in the 70's, it's on youtube and it's really lowdown funky fun.
...AND he sang Philadelphia Freedom on the same Soul Train episode...Sir EJ was also the FIRST white performer to appear on the series!

At a EJ concert in Philly I attended, some guy in the audience was planning to ask his girl to marry him and via a friend of a friend got a message thru to Elton and asked if he could dedicate this song to her and as Elton was signing this song, this guy proposed. It was so nice of him (Elton) to do this. Sweet moment at that concert.

In my early teens I was quite a fan of Elton John, I still am. I remember someone saying he was lame because he was gay. That was when I decided I don't care - the music was awesome!
But I understand, it wasn't something you were used to and if I am honest with myself it felt a little scary. I don't know why. It just did. But man did I get my friend back with Freddy Mercury a few weeks later!
I remember talking to my mom about it and she laughed and she said yeah, it is kind of obvious once you see it - and sometimes when you are a fan or friend your mind can trick you to have it your way. She mentioned Liberace that was popular when her mother was young - women loved him in more ways than one and they couldn't see the signs, despite the grand flair, bling, and candelabras. According to my mom fights started over weather Liberace was gay or not.
He had a piano shaped swimming pool. OF COURSE he was gay! Lol.

In the late 70s when I was 14... I used to sing this song to my girlfriend.
We ended up getting married....had 3 kids and now...45 years later we have 10 grandchildren.
Needless to say....I'm glad I sang her "Your Song".

A guy I was seeing after graduation, used to play this song for me to express his love for me..tragically our love song ended as he was killed riding with a drunk driver. This song will always bring a tear and smile to my face at the same time.

If you're not that familiar with his music, get ready for such a long journey.
He's never been my favorite artist, but I always loved many of his hits (you're absolutely right, it doesn't matter his sexual orientation): "Skyline pigeon"; "I guess that's why they call it the blues"; "I'm still standing"; "Sad songs (say so much)"; "Don't go breaking my heart"; "Nikita".
But if you wanna do something really outstanding, way different from what other people who react to songs use to do, then I recommend for you such a beautiful and underrated Elton John's song - "I want love" - its official music video. The most fascinating thing about Elton John is he didn't have a solo UK number 1 record until Sacrifice came out in 1990. He was ubiquitous, his back catalogue could hold its own against any pop star you name, everyone wanted to duet with him, but success kept dancing out of reach for so long. Then of course he set a world record for Princess Diana's funeral. Astonishing. My favourite song is I'm Still Standing. Even as a small child, the lyric "if our love was just a circus you'd be a clown by now" had a haunting quality to it. And that video with all the painted bodies is a thing of pure art.

Another song by Elton John if you haven't heard it is crocodile rock. The reason we come here is because we love you. And the way you do things.
I think what makes this song great is it tells a relatable story (something modern music has forgotten how to do, imo), and he sings it as a character in that story...a singer as a story teller. Also, the lyrics match that story perfectly. The words sound like it was written by a naïve, shy young person, in love for the first time. There are even typos in the letter ('If I was a sculptor, but then again, no...').
"Your song" has been one of the most popular wedding songs in Sweden for many years. For example, I played the piano and sang it at my nephews wedding some years ago.

Like most old time EJ fans, I find discussions about his sexuality to be tiresome. Bernie wrote this lyric about a girl he had a crush on at the time. He was about 17 when he wrote it . This song belongs to everyone.

This song was playing when me and my boyfriend were on a trip. He sang thus song to me and said this is our song. We became engaged but it never came to pass to marry. He came back into my life 3yrs later but again this did not work. He still my 1st love and you never forget that person. He's gone but l love this song so Thank You for this memory. I loved your reaction to this. I see many other comments mention how the music is Elton but the words are Bernie Taupin. Elton would sit at the piano, put Bernie's words where the music would normally be and 'come up' with the music. I don't think one is better than the other, together they are beautiful. I would suggest listening to a live performance with Elton performing this at the piano. You are one of my favourite reactors, keep doing what you do the way you do, fabulous 💕💕

This was the first EJ song I heard, it was the first cut on his debut album; in 1969 a good friend said "You gotta hear this!" It was an instant hit. Elton was in the closet for a long time and probably got into serious drugs to deal with his discomfort; it wasn't until long after that he found peace with himself and love.
Elton and his lyricist Bernie Taupin won the 2024 Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. There's a video on CZcams of Elton playing and singing this song on stage with Bernie standing there.

I was 11 or 12 or so when Elton became well known. There was no discussion about him being gay etc and 50 years ago, being a kid, that wouldn't be on my radar anyway. He just dressed wild and I always liked when his songs came up the radio. "Your Song" was one of the EJ songs I could actually play on the piano when I was young.

He was asked to sing at Princess Diana's funeral and changed the words of it for her at her service and it showed the love he had for her and the heartache he felt when she was gone. You would miss out on something pretty amazing if you don't listen to it because you're saying its good for the soul.
