The Real Life Game of Thrones Part 1: Is Great Britain Westeros?

- The universe of Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire is an incredibly unique and interesting one, but it is also heavily based upon real life events. This video is the first part of many detailing some of those real life inspirations. This video focuses primarily on the comparison between the British Isles and Westeros.

+RealLifeLore Ireland is not part of Britain
It depends what you really mean by that. If you are simply saying that Ireland and Great Britain are different islands, then you are certainly correct. However, the British isles consist of Great Britain, Ireland, and some other smaller islands, so saying that Ireland = British Isles = Britain isn't that far off really. Also, some of the northern area of the island of Ireland is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so saying that the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland = British Isles = Britain = Ireland isn't really that far off either. Basically, it's not really that uncommon to refer to all of the British Isles as Britain.
kind of funny logic, I could say that an ass is a head just because they both belong to a body.
keep concepts the way they suppose to exist, no matter who used and continues to use them so fucking wrong... there's political interests involved.
But just imagine the face of future generations inheriting these nonsense...
If I still took History then this would mess me up... *so in 1066, William the conqueror crossed the Narrow Sea invaded Britain on his dragons, from which he quiscoped Harold Gowinson in the face and became the king of the iron throne.*
@AlphaVortex108 its the most popular theory
@AlphaVortex108 we don't have enough evidence for the time and the theory of him being shot in the eye came from the Bayeux Tapestry
@AlphaVortex108 like I said its just a theory that he got shot in the eye for people who are less educated on the time period
George RR Martin has already admitted the series is loosely based around the war of the roses in Yorkshire in England
But the Wars of The Roses were not only confined to Yorkshire. They spanned most of England and in some cases Wales :).
@@thomashavard-morgan8181 it also ended in Leicestershire, Bosworth

George R. R. Martin also mentioned that the history of the Capetian dinasty (especially the novel by Maurice Druon "Les Rois maudits") was also a major inspiration on the Song of Ice and Fire series.
Instead of white walkers we had the ginger walkers (Scotland)

RealLifeLore, WOW! I never realized that Westeros is shaped like Great Britain, until your video. I typically view fictional lore with a abstract mindset, so I usually don't think about superimposing any practical qualities from the lore, into the real world. Now every time I look at Great Britain, the GoT opening theme song plays in my head.

really cool video, but you missed a really cool big one that i noticed :)
the first people in the british isles, native british (the ones who got stuck there after the iceage) used to worship nature and believed that god was nature essentially, they had priests that were called Druids who used to do weird shit with trees, they also believed that there were people who could transform into animals. then when the romans came over and made people civil or whatever most of them stopped worshiping nature.
i think this sounds very similar to the children of the forest, the old gods and wargs. the romans mainly stayed on the south side too, which would have meant that druidism was probably retained more in the north in britain, just like the north retained the old gods in game of thones.
He mentioned the celts.

Europe is not a seperate continent to Britian
"Mainland" Europe, if you want to be nitpicking...
Yes it is, Ireland and Britian are 2 large seperate landmasses to Europe, Continents are single landmasses, Eurasia is the Continent. Europe is part of the continent of Eurasia.
They are not seperate landmasses. The Dover straight (and the Waddensea and part of the North sea) is simply a piece of the same landmass thats below sealevel.
depends your definition. It really is just a term for grouping related landmasses. As a Brit I think it makes total sense to consider the British Isles as separate to continental europe. The cultures are quite different really and I don't know anyone British that considers themselves european.
person8203
Really? As a dutchman I find our cultures to be quite similar. Besides the Flemish, the Brits and the Germans are most similar to us. Followed by the Scandinavians.
It's funny, because I'm guessing the large majority of europe sees it exactly the opposite way. As in they feel Britian/Great Britain/The British Isles (It sometimes gets confusing when to use which term) is so obviously part of the european culture. It sometimes baffles me that you guys don't seem to (want to) see that yourself.
I guess when you live on an island, you tend to look outward a bit differently.

Idk how 9 people thumbed this up, the UK is *100 PER CENT* part of the *continent* of Europe. My fucking God.

Honestly you sound mentally challenged, but I'm glad you felt the need to point out that there's a bit of water between the UK and Europe. Would never have noticed otherwise.
Look up what "continent" means. An island off a continent is technically not part of that continent.
*comments* : ' Ireland is not part of the British Isles.'
umm yes, it is. The British Isles is a geographical term which includes two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and 5,000 small islands.
It does NOT mean Ireland is PART of the UK.
saph201 yeah you're right I try and tell people that from where I'm from but I live on the border between the republic and the north so tensions pretty high if I said it out loud I'd probably get my teeth kicked in
Geographical terms should be politically neutral. Geography is a science.
It was a term introduced into the English Language by imperialists who wanted to lay claim to Ireland, they also tried to call the Atlantic "the British Ocean". The original "British Isles" was also not purely geographical as it included British Islands nowhere near the Britain or Ireland.
Neither of the two governments use the term and the majority of Irish people do not enjoy being called British in any way shape or form. It can never be purely geographical if there is a British Government.
@@Parasmunt Nonsense. Plenty of geographic terms are politically charged from one side's perspective: examples current and historical include the British Isles, Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, Macedonia (FYROM), Svalbard, and so on. The term Great Britain and British Isles are geographical terms that are standard and well-used.
@@ShaunRL The rest of the world uses it. It's used in academia, it's used in education and in every other scientific field. The UK government doesn't use the term because it wanted to be respectful in its dealings with Ireland -- which is a noble sentiment, but doesn't change the fact the term "British Isles" is the standard geographical name for the archipelago we find ourselves sharing. And besides, our island is called Great Britain to distinguish it from "little" Britain, which was Brittany (the region of France); nobody disputes either of those terms as purely geographical, so why should British Isles be any different?
Well done. Excellent video.

I feel like the seashell story is actually Caligula taking the mickey out of his soldiers. They did not want to cross the channel (most probably have never been on a boat before). He was so annoyed at their apparent cowardice that he ordered them to collect seashells because that was all they were good for.
Good video, but I would question your suggestion that William the Conqueror personally killed Harold Godwinson. Also, the suggestion that the current Queen is a direct descendant of William is kind of bullshit...
Btw there is a direct loyal line from William I (William the Conqueror) to Queen Elizabeth II... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descent_of_Elizabeth_II_from_William_the_Conqueror
+Athique Ahmed By that token, the majority of European royal houses have a direct connection to the throne though - they were all inter-married. The Saxe-Coburg and Gotha family that the Queen belongs to were just one of many, and her link blood-wise to William I is minute. In fact, a good percentage of the European population in general will have some William in their blood.
That's the point.
What's the point, sorry?
+Navilight That the queen is descended 22 times from William I.
There were Celts living in Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Brittany long before the Anglo-Saxons arrived. The ancient Scots (Picts and Caledonians) and the Welsh and Bretons were Brythonic Celts and the Irish were Gaelic Celts
Mac McJof i did a blood test the other day and found that im actually 100 percent celtic, brythonic.which is wierd because only my dad is scottish, my mums english tottally and her family has always been english, which makes me wonder if there were actually any celtic communities remaining in england post saxon and even normon conquest.
Kaide Walsh That’s why I said “Ancient” Scots. Not literally the Scoti from Ireland. It’s easier to understand.
Great research and presentation!
Where is part 2 and 3
My read of the books is that westeros is much larger than Britain. The populations and army sizes tend to suggest this as well. Reading the books I was thinking of the North as like Britain, Reach like France, Dorne like Spain and perhaps the river lands like the Rhineland, and perhaps the Vale similar to Panonia. The parallels are there with Britain but could equally say that about other countries in Europe, and GRRM describes westeros as a continent. To understand the large epic scale of the conflict think a world war occurring in 1200s. Westeros is like the entire Western Europe (minus Italy), the free cities are similar to Italy, Valeria slavers bay and this similar to the near East (and the ancient civilisations), Qarth the Middle East, asshai to Persia and Yiti to China. Obviously this is all not exact as the world is made up, but I think this is the scale the books are item tended to be imagined on.
Always imagined Dorne as Italy TBH.
+Noah Porteus yeah either way but point is the scale of the kingdoms
Spain represents westeross very good. The south looks like Dorne and the north is very cold and rainy. The wall would be pirinees
+Mr Pink Also Grr martin inspired in Spain. The Andals are inspired in the Andalos, of Al Andalus. Who conquered Iberia except the North, exaclty the same as the andals.
Obviously but Britain is the primary source

Nick Huizing Naw I'm just wondering if he knows the UK is apart of Europe or did he just say that by accident. He confused me their as well.
Westeros, Western Ross...it's pretty obvious, that's the UK
UK is part of the EU, but we refer to the largest land-mass as "Continental Europe" also a lot of people in the UK don't really view themselves as European and this is why the vote-out is underway. I guess it's a bit like when Ireland and Scotland say they are not British, yet they are both part of the British Isles...
However, the name "the British Isles" isn't commonly used in Ireland
Did they ever make part 2, cant find it

Hey, Im irish. First of all this is a good video, now for the people arguing about the title I will clear it up: The british Isles consists of both Islands. Great britain is only the eastern one of the islands. The Uk consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. All of Ireland except a part of the north is the Republic Of Ireland. So the title should be 'Westeros is the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland' or 'Westeros is the British Isles' Hope this cleared things up.
Aye Laddie!
Cillian Higgins im british and i agree. No bad blood.
Cillian Higgins I’m English and I have no hate for Ireland you just wanted independence and I respect that, it happens when empires are about to fall
British isles( both isles) and great britain( east isle of the British isles )
It says Great Britain not British isles that’s why we are annoyed I agree with your statement but the title still is wrong if he is including the Republic of Ireland
Westeros is more like whole Europe than Britain alone
Watch the video idiot.
Britain is really the only relevant country though
I agree with you, even though some might think it is largely based on British history the World of ASOIAF is truly a incredibly diverse world, such as the fact the Red wedding was inspired by a very similar tragedy that took place in Scotland, to the fact that Braavos is very similar to Amsterdam or that the Reach is quite similar to medieval France both in their Physical and Human Geography.

The Gaels and Picts were in the Highlands, the Brythonic settlers in the Lowlands .
The way Americans group three completely different groups of people together as "Celts" is also very strange.
It's not the Americans. Gaels, Picts and Welshmen spoke languages belonging to the Celtic branch of Indo-European family, hence they were known as "Celts". It's the same way that Russians, Poles and Serbs are all "Slavs".

That's not relevent to my point at all.
Jason Gunn-Davis
Not to the main point admittedly, just pointing out calling these people Celts is not an American innovation, so don't chalk one up for the "things known to the Yanks by the wrong names out of ignorance" list yet.
+Mr. Wen \m/
No, it is in fact a strange American thing.
In the UK we don't group three highly different groups of people together, merely because because two highly different languages have the same route.
I'd say three, but we don't know what language the Picts spoke.
Jason Gunn-Davis
Not in common usage perhaps, but the word "Celts" have been used to described speakers of Celtic tongues for a long time. Everything that's out of fashion in the UK doesn't have to be an American innovation.
I've always considered Westeros to be Britain re-imagined, however I had it slightly off, the addition of Ireland upside down really makes sense. With this in mind I looked to the location of where I live and how it would be if transposed from reality to this new map, it put me in Umber lands. Straight away something stuck out, the nearest big river to my home town is called the River Humber, what do you know lol. GRRM you sneaky rascal. Nice vid, A+.
Westeros, Western Ross, it's pretty obvious it's the UK
Well yes, but as I said I'd just imagined the map as different, previously not taking into account Ireland being used and turned upside down, so that I had places transposed slightly differently. So previously for instance I had Dorne as being where Kent is on the island of Great Britain, East Anglia was the Storm lands, Lannister lands were North-west Wales etc etc. Where I live I previously had factored as being in the north Riverlands.
yeah, also for me on the flipped map makes Cambridge where Casterley rock is, ruled by house Lannister who's sigil has a lion, and our university crest has 4 lions on it
The locations of all cities of southern half of westors are based off real locations of Ireland's cities
I live in Dublin so that's either Casterly Rock or Lannisport
Where is the War of The roses video? T-T
I really love that video
Watch the Last Kingdom on Netflix, not 100% historically accurate but its pretty good.
