      It comes down to how both drivers attack the track. Hamilton tends to get on throttle by mid corner, whilst Verstappen is on the throttle slightly past mid corner. Less corner entry speed allows you to get on the throttle quicker thus giving you a higher top speed before the following braking point.

    Dont forget the weight has gone up +50kg since 2020. The tyres and wheel rims are different. They have to use a biofuel mix now too. And also the regulations to outwash the tyre wake have changed. So, while the RB20 is probably behind when compared directly to the W11, I don't think it was as dominant. It was a shorter season due to covid but Max still won 2 races that year, Perez won one, as well as Gasly winning one. So win percentage was lower than RB19 for example. In Abu Dhabi max won by 15seconds. In the 2020 Bahrain GP, where this merc lap is taken from, Max finished 1.5sec behind Lewis, and got fastest lap.

    • @e2rqey
      @e2rqey Před 3 měsíci +3

      I'd be shocked if they ever do under these regulations.
      It's not just the weight. That's not even the primary factor. It's the consistency of the downforce, and the quality of the suspension. That's why the W11 just looks absolutely on rails and even the RB20 doesn't come close.
      Downforce produced by overbody aero is much more consistent, progressive and predicable than ground-effect aero. Since the downforce produced doesn't rely on a stable ride height anywhere near as much. Meaning the amoutn of downforce produced is almost completely dependent on just the speed that the car is going. So drivers can be much more confident about how much grip they have.
      Also the old regs allowed for much much much more complex suspension. So they could control how they handled/chassis dynamics with way more precision. And since the aero didn't depend on keeping the underfloor within such a small ride height window, they could have the suspension be far more compliant and not be forced to keep it extremely stiff the way that the ground effect cars have to be run.
      Much better suspension, more consistent down-force, more down-force, and the old regs also had bigger wider tires with smaller rims and a more rubber. So even the tires themselves were better suited. The difference in the size of the tires is so large you can see the difference just by comparing them in the video.
      It's also worth mentioning that those cars were developed before the cost cap era as well. So you had teams spending literally like 5-6X what's currently spent per season to develop and run these cars. Under the old regs the cars themselves were far more expensive, and had more people working on/developing them. And that's all in addition to a set of regs that allowed them to create much faster, better F1 cars.
      The technological progress and institutional learning since 2020 cannot make up for all of those other factors.

    The whole purpose of 2022 regulations was to make the cars follow closer and for F1 to be more competitive. However, there is no battle at the front - even though the rest of the field is quite close, much closer than before. So I don't know if 2022 regs fulfilled anything other than having another team at the top. Teams are roughly where they always were. The cars didn't get any faster comparing to 2020 / 2021. And they got heavier. So I truly don't know what I whink of these new ground effect cars.
