What I have found is that when I try to smash the ball to the other side, I still tend to give it a top spin instead of just smashing it flat, which is a bit of a problem but it goes to show that some habits just don't die.

    If the stewards have been consistent with their calls all year, then yes, Max would and should have gotten a penalty. You need to turn in at some point.
    That being said, the fact that Lewis only got a slap on the wrist for his move at Silverstone may have been on the minds of the stewards. I kind of almost saw this as a make-up call for their decision earlier in the season.
    In a perfect world, Max should have been penalized. But the fact that Lewis was so much faster could have also been a factor as the stewards knew Lewis would get by eventually anyway.

    • @josiahboatengmyrie

      10 second penalty isn't a slap on the wrists end of the day had max left room like Lewis did here, he wouldn't have been sent into a wall.... and max had a LOT more room to leave space in Silverstone about 3 car widths to the edge of the track which he didn't bother to use once he made the second decision to turn into Lewis and cause an accident.

      So what penalty do you think lewis should have received for silverstone?
      And why not just give max the same 10 second penalty? Just because Hamilton avoided max in Brazil, but max didn’t avoid lewis in silverstone, you think it’s fair that max got no penalty since lewis ‘only’ got a 10s penalty?

Then Nico starts at the back (with the fastest car) and has to get by them all. Excellent analysis of Lewis's ability to stick in the clean air through the corners and line up the opposing car for a tow at the beginning of the straight in Brazil. • @LandoSabers
    @LandoSabers Před 2 lety +10

    Personally, I don't think Max should have gotten a penalty. These things will endlessly be argued in either favor or opposition of Max or Lewis, but I agree with Wheatley's statement of "this is all about 'let them race.'" Formula One is about pushing the quickest cars in the world to their absolute breaking points, in addition to racing against 19 of the other best drivers in the world, and like Senna said, if you no longer go for that gap, you're no longer a racing driver.
    Could Max have handled the corner better and actually gained more time on Lewis without going wide? Sure, but this is the sort of thing that F1 fans tune in for every grand prix weekend. It's boring watching a race like most of the Mexico City GP or races where one team completely dominates the other start to finish. We like seeing wheel to wheel action, and it makes the drivers better as a result, if there are no collisions.
    This is Senna vs. Prost, (yourself) Nico vs. Hamilton, etc. It's good to see a worthy rival for the title again, makes things exciting.

      how can i race if you are allowed to push me 10 meters of track?

    • @LandoSabers
      @LandoSabers Před 2 lety +1

      @@Kevinschart Many people that are upset about these sorts of incidents have only started watching F1 due to seeing Drive to Survive on Netflix and seeing how that show has vastly increased the attention to title fights and on-track incidents not only in the public view, but for the FIA and team bosses as well.
      Realistically, that incident in Brazil did not put Hamilton at any disadvantage at all, and he essentially lost no time. Lest you forget, he won the Grand Prix. 15-20+ km/h difference, and one point 27 km/h in the straights, is an absurd amount of difference, even with a new engine.
      I believe the rationale behind this decision vs. Silverstone is that Lewis received a penalty in Britain due to the sheer speed at which they were both traveling, as well as the massive consequence of his action, knocking Max out of the race and into the hospital. Max's action? Zero consequence, as he lost and both he and Lewis took zero damage. Realistically, Max could have taken the corner sharper and actually built time back on Lewis, but getting into hypotheticals isn't a good habit.

    I feel that incident between Max and Lewis was completely fine. Max is trying his hardest to defend against Lewis, who looked unstoppable. I feel (at least up to certain point) it is okay to defend against the car trying to pass you, Max's move might have seemed a little dangerous. However the worst of there problems was a little bit of dirt on their tires. Max was desperate to hold on just that little bit longer, unfortunately he couldn't hold on for long. This championship is nail biting stuff and I am looking forward to this weekends race. 😁

    Of course Max should get a penalty. Even his own supporters agree. This is what Max usually does. Many times when he is about to be overtaken he would overshoot corners or run wide. In Copse you could die if it went wrong in brazil the worst that could have happened is a dnf for one of the two or maybe both. It sure wasn´t clean racing, but comparing it to an incident where far more was on the line is just not right. The only difference between the Perez/Norris incidents at RBR and this incident is that one car ended up actually forced into gravel and had their race affected. But even then, Perez picked up those penalties for forcing Leclerc wide despite Charles not being slowed too much. F1 needs to take the same stewards from track to track for greater consistency and they'll hopefully avoid problems like this in the future.

    Imo how the stewards dealt with the incident is a case of favouring the show and the entretainment over the strict rules. In any other situation they would have probably given a penalty, but, likely due to them seeing how fast Lewis was, they decided to 'let them race' and not interfere, thinking LH would pass Max eventually. Tbh this was likely the better decision overall, since it made quite the spectacle in Interlagos and made Lewis' win seem even more well-earned.

    Max should have gotten a penalty (coming from a max fan this 😂) , but it should've been during the race and not deliberated for so long.. I feel if that had happened, then red bull forced into damage limitation would've come up with a surprise strategy master class and maybe (just maybe) they would've fought right up on the last lap for the win

    It seems Max didn’t try hard to really hit the apex but at the same time it didn’t look like he purposely opened the wheel into Lewis. A very lucky incident though and a great move of avoiding a collision by Lewis.

    Although I am not nearly qualified to determine whether or not max should have gotten a penalty, I still believe that in this case the stewards were correct in not giving one. Although Max pushed Lewis off the track, he himself went off the track as well. This differs to the Alonso - Giovinazzi incident/s in Austin because one was pushed off where the other stayed remained on it. Regardless of the outcome, we still have one of the most exciting season finales in recent history to look forward to within the next few weeks

  • @shreyashpalresha179
    @shreyashpalresha179 Před 2 lety +2

    Verstappen should have gotten a penalty clearly.
    Considering that Norris and Perez got penalties for incidents that were similar and less egregious than this one, the stewards should remain consistent with the penalties.
    The onboard camera (which mysteriously was not available to the stewards at the time of the incident) when compared to the previous lap makes it abundantly clear that verstappen intentionally ran Hamilton off the road( In the process going off track himself)
    Also penalties are given based on the incident itself and not the consequences .
    So there are 2 inconsistencies here.
    Would they have penalized verstappen if they had crashed?

  • @turbokart3776
    @turbokart3776 Před 2 lety +4

    The way I see it, Max started understeering on corner entry, making it an accident ORIGINALLY. However, I know for a fact that Max very much so could have caught the car and got it to steer while only slightly going off the track. So, with that, I believe that, despite the original move being nothing more than a mistake, Max SHOULD have gotten a penalty, based off of Max being one of the best in the world, and the fact that he definitely could have kept the car reasonably close to the track if he wanted to. At the same time, though, Lewis ended up getting through and winning anyway, so at the end of the day, this didn't affect the outcome at all, so said penalty should be nothing more than a 5-place grid drop.

  • @mryancharcoal
    @mryancharcoal Před 2 lety +8

    Here's my opinion and it honestly rings pretty close to Tommo's opinion of it as well. I don't think he should get the penalty. Why? Well first of all, most likely the penalty he would get would be the 5 second penalty and because Valtteri was 3 seconds behind, that would mean Max would lose second without the ability to defend it. Now, if they gave him the penalty very shortly after the incident during the race, by all means, give him a 5 second penalty. He would then have the ability to fight for that position and try his best to get a larger then 5 second gap to Valtteri. Whether or not he could doesn't matter, what matters is that you are giving him an on-track in-the-moment ability to fight the consequence of his actions. If you gave him the penalty now, you are taking his defense away from him, its like playing god, which, no one should have the ability to do. I personally am in the Max crowd, but I think the stewards should have given him the penalty right after the incident and allowed Max to battle with the lap times compared to Valtteri, I personally think they slightly screwed up there. But, they did what they did in the moment, they can't go back on it now.

    I think Verstappen shouldn’t have gotten a penalty. In any normal circumstance he should have gotten a penalty. But considering the two didn’t touch as well as the fact that Hamilton was able to overtake and win the race in the end (meaning the incident didn’t affect him much) I think the stewards should just let them race because at the end of the day the fans want excitement and that moment was arguably the most exciting of the race.

    I've generally been okay with the idea that the driver on the inside is allowed to run out to the edge of the track on exit to crowd out the driver on the outside - as long as they were ahead at the exit. I think this incident shows how ridiculous that can become taken to the extreme though and maybe that needs rethinking. Max was almost an entire car length behind going into the corner. The only reason he was in a position to push Lewis out is that he eased off the brakes to ensure he was ahead - and he had to ease off so much that he wasn't even close to making the corner anymore.
    Overtaking is already so difficult in F1 and the defending driver has a lot of advantages. If this is allowed and everyone were to start defending like this it risks the whole thing becoming a farce. It has to be a penalty in my opinion. It's made even more frustrating given the penalties Lando and Checo got in Austria for seemingly doing a similar thing while not even running wide themselves. By not penalising this, and the inconsistent stewarding in general, it risks opening up a can of worms where no one - drivers or fans - know what is and isn't allowed anymore. You can't have a fair competition where no one knows what the rules are.

    Arguments against a penalty: We wanted to see the Lewis Max battle on track, Netflix needs even more story lines, the stewards are more scared of Christian Horner than Toto Wolff.

  • @Victor-te7tm
    @Victor-te7tm Před 2 lety +5

    Its basically impossible to overtake from the outside if that is not a penalty. Verstappen used his car as a blockade, running himself off track and pushed Hamilton wide to hold onto the lead. If you look at the steering angel of Verstappen you can clearly see it was done deliberately and he is not even trying to make the corner. Therefore i think it is a penalty 100%. But the stewards dosent give it because it is a championship battle and it would have been boring for the viewers if the race would have been decided by a penalty.
