I love Formula 1. This isn’t just a car race, it’s a massive group science competition. Ten teams are all fighting to be first, and on every team there are hundreds of people, spending millions of dollars, all working together to push technology to its limit.
In this video, we’re gonna show you what it takes to build and drive some of the fastest and most expensive cars in the world. We’ll give you rare access into a factory in England where they build these cars and into a garage in Bahrain where they race them. This is Formula 1 cars, explained!
One note because it’s important to me you never be confused about what is paid for and what isn’t: Oracle comped my flights, but didn’t have any say in the editorial and didn’t see the episode before it went live. The Red Bull F1 Team did not pay me, had no say in the editorial, and didn’t see the episode before publish either. Everything I say here is entirely my own.

This is what I would have liked Netflix's drive to survive series to have been about.
If only that was the case
Couldn't have said it better myself
That case it would be one hour documentary and it wouldn't be anything original, the format they using now allow them to do season after season, so the choice is obvious no matter which one is better
you mean you don't like the fake drama and soap opera treatment?!
I would love a new F1 netlfix show like this, make them both!
Cleo, I have absolutely no idea how you managed to score this inside look into F1...my inner child could barely contain my excitement for the full 24 minutes. I hope to see more of this F1 content in future!

Embarrassing that NASCAR racing has had such a stronghold on the average racing fan in the USA. open wheel racing is so much more entertaining than watching oval racing

I'm a long time F1 fan (30+ years) and this is probably one of the best summaries and quick documentaries about what's fascinating about the sport ever. Really, really well done.
I agree. Great video.
what I liked was the vorteces explanation. Even F1 TV pundits only ever talk about the visual stuff and its importance, while 90% of the performance is invisible.
I absolutely agree! This is really good and short documentary. I really enjoyed seeing your exitement and awe about the science behind the different parts of a F1 Car and the teamwork.
Argh argh argh
started enjoying F1 after understanding that it is not a racing sport but an engineering sport
Not many people understand this
85% engineering, 10% driver, 5% team. In a sport where 1% can make the difference between 1st or 10th (that's my breakdown)
Its an engineering racing sport :)
That's true for motorsport in general, but F1 pushes it to the very extreme
You watch F1 for the politics first, memes second, engineering third....and fourth the actual racing.
Nearly 40 years watching F1 and this is by far the best, most informative video I've ever seen
This is really probably one of the best F1 videos ever made. Or at least maybe the best I've found. The amount of access you got is insane, countless automotive journalists would kill for this.
I think it'd be cool if one of the teams released something like this after a major regulation change covering the previous regulations, showing how they built the engine, some of the aerodynamic intricacies of that generation, etc. Very unlikely that'd ever happen as I'd imagine even that could give out secrets, but this is about as close as anyone's gonna get otherwise. What a great video.

30+ years an F1 fan. I still learnt and experienced new unique little nuggets. This is hands down the most comprehensive and easily understood, yet also in-depth intros to F1.
What I love the most. Cleo, your absolute wonder and joy experiencing and appreciating the value of your experience and access caught in this video. Your excited skip and dance heading to engine testing, the subtle absolute attention (your eyes and expression) listening to the engineer explaining the engine testing, the childlike glee stealing your attention back to the changes in the engine sound. Those little details take this from the realm of just another die hard factory visit, to sharing the intense privilege and uniqueness of the experience. Huge respect.
Thank you 🙃
Not an F1 Rookie but this is one of the best F1 films Ive ever seen. Your excitement not just at learning lots of new stuff but also being given an opportunity not a lot of people get, shone through. Hi Cleo,
Hope you had a fantastic time at our factory and with the race team at pre-season testing! It’s a shame I didn’t bump into you as that would have been wild but glad you had such a great time and really appreciated the access given on site.

As a casual to regular f1 fan this was an incredibly great run through. To just see what’s happening in the factory from the testing, simulations, strategy. Never expected to learn anything standard general knowledge side but loved seeing the 60% sized model in the wind tunnel. I was wondering how to teams were navigating that obstacle. And seeing the engine being in production for 2 years now. Recommend highly great stuff Cleo was great

Just watched your episode and I had blast. As a lifelong F1 fan I can appreciate your enthusiasm and energy while making it. Not everybody can transmit what really goes on behind the scenes and you have done a mega job. Thank you, thank you, thank you !!!!
I've been following F1 since around 1983, and as many others have said in the comments, this is one of the best documentaries I've watched on F1. Very, very well done. What sets it apart from other documentaries is the scope, showing that everything, the car design, manufacture, pit crew, drivers, and strategy, must work at their peak. It was really cool to see Hannah Schmitz representing the strategy team. Red Bull's strategy has been just perfect; it's mind-boggling how they can get it right every single time, even when the strategy seems odd for a fan (one of those "why are they doing that?!" moments), and then after the race is usually "yeah, they were spot-on on the strategy". Great video.
I’ve been watching F1 since ‘99 and would easily recommend this video to both old heads like myself, as well as new fans to the sport. Great work Cleo!

I love your curiosity and excitement and the way this video has been put together.just incredible!
An interesting characteristic of modern f1 engines is that they doesn´t use a direct sparkplug for igniting the mixture, the use a pre combustion chamber (turbulent jet ignition) to inject jets of fire to the cylinder chamber (it´s like a mini flamethrower inside each cylinder). This allows the engine to be able to achieve complete combustion with very lean air/fuel mixture, this is one of the reasons of the high thermal efficiency of these engines.
Is great to start seeing this technology arriving to road cars, like the Maserati MC20.
Great video btw!

Not true about the drs flap, look at the red bull live or even other teams like Ferrari Aston etc. You can check the FP2 highlights if you'd like. Also just look at the footage in this video lol
This needs more upvotes
@@maximbeekenkamp3342
They clearly hinge from the top and not the middle. 1:06 in the FP2 footage from this weekends Aus GP shows it. The point of it hinging there is to maximise the gap between the bottom plane and the top plane. Hinging in the middle would create more drag.
Also at 8:32 in this video we can see the hinge points on the rear wing, and they're at the top of the wing plane instead of the middle.

Take care! 🎉❤🎉
Cleo and Max was a crossover I never expected
I watched your Formula 1 explained video 2 years ago, and I've been an F1 fan ever since.
Wow. Phenomenal coverage. I love your enthusiasm as well.
AMAZING! CONGRATULATIONS! on a GREAT piece work, I have been following F1 since the 70's and this is one of the BEST documentaries (yes a documentry!). Insightful , easy to understand!
3:39 It's 135 million *excluding* driver salary not minus. :)
that’s exactly how i perceived it lol i thought she did fine, but i see how somebody could misunderstand
You really do justice to the science, technology, and human community. Absolutely killer video. I have been a mechatronics engineer for 25 years for a company that builds big yellow stuff. I am also an avid gear head and F1 race fan. I dont get much downtime but I love spending it; watching your videos with my daughters. This one was extremely well done and super enjoyable!!!! Thank you!
I love how detailed this video is! Great video Cleo!
Instant watch, it is so crazy you got this opportunity
Hoping many more of these to come!
I just didn’t want this video to ever end. This is absolutely mind blowing. You should do this with all the teams.
You are so blessed to be able to collect all of these awesome experiences. Thank you for making us part of it.
Thanks Cleo. Outstanding job with this very informative video. 👍👍👍
What a fabulous video!! Excellent job Cleo!
What an honor for Max to get the chance to collaborate with Cleo! 😁
At 63, have been watching F1 since the late 60s. Great video, incredible you got to do this trip/tour. They were beautiful cars the 2 times I went to Indy in the mid 2000s.
