The big interest in retro rifles is a good sign that people do want an original style rifle and they may actually take the rifles out and shoot their 3 positions, with iron sights!!! Maybe true marksmanship isn't dead!

Just an FYI Brownells updated their OD green stock sets I just got a set in they look nice the OD green is OD green a little lighter then the original 601 stocks but you can only mimic paint to color polymer so much due to paint having a deep sheen but I am happy with the updated color just an fyi if you dont want the lime look give Brownells a call!

Ping! Ping! You definitely CAN hear that flash suppressor ring. This was my first time hearing a gun so equipped being fired.

I’m fascinated with the 601s. They were the first non-prototype AR-15s, the first produced by Colt, the first ones produced in quantity, the first to be bought by the US military, and the first to be issued out to troops and used in the field. Production began in December of 1959, with the first 300 rifles being produced that month. Approximately 100 Model 601 rifles would be made with brown furniture, while the remaining 200 or so products would be made with green furniture.

I agree and that's why I had to get the Brownells Retro 601 two years ago even though I was US Army and issued an M16A1 in 1968! Sure I'd love to have the A1 but couldn't pass on the 601 for the same exact reasons you said. However I've read the first 300 Colt 601s were in the reddish brown fiberglass then the next 14,000 or so had the fiberglass furniture painted green. This continued until mid-1963 when production of the 602 with black plastic furniture began. Some very late 601s likely had the black plastic furniture.

Look, OP. Great post and informative as always. I guess I must be the last guy to view this. I just want to say "Retro mustangs and retro M-16 clones!" I know talented guys who can do their own body work who are hauling old rusted mustangs out of the junkyard and completely rebuilding them. Brownells is doing similar things from scratch with these rifles. I am one of the guys who used to hump an M-16 and my life depended on it working. If the army ordnance people had listened to Gene Stoner they could have saved several thousand grunts' lives. It is sad to see that these Brownell's rifles are more dependable than the ones they sent us into war with!

Out of the Brownells retro line, this would be my first pick, when I can afford it! Spot on with the history and I look forward to more info, as it comes in regarding the 601 rifle. Great video, thank you!

Chris, another excellent video of a rifle I bought and love. Thanks for mentioning a great source for retro parts, John Thomas of Retro Arms Works. I am extremely pleased with the high quality of his parts and the work he does. He is a nice guy who keeps you updated on your order status.
John sells the following parts and more:
    Reproduction 601 style bolt catch
Reproduction 601 style “horizontal lines” type magazine release button
Reproduction 601 style ejection port door
    Plus he can:
Dimple both ends of a pin or selector and reparkerize (customer supplies part for modification)
(John recommends the DPMS selector which I got from Brownells along with a DPMS takedown pin)
John doesn’t stock the DPMS selector or rear takedown pin but I found them at Brownells
    Brownells F1000847 DPMS AR15 Safety Selector 231-000-088
Brownells F1003040 DPMS AR15 Rear Takedown Pin 231-000-104
I also got the following at Brownells (but didn’t need to send them to John for machining)
Brownells AR15 Buttstock Screw 100-028-029 (No drain hole)
KNS AR-15 Perma Pin Firing Pin Retainer 923-000-059WB (To replace the cotter key)
Also my BRN-601 had a hex head screw attaching the pistol grip so I swapped it with a flathead screw from another AR (I believe the original 601 used a flathead screw)

I have one of their M16-A1's, it's sweet. Upgraded mine with the chrome bolt group, original A1 furniture (trapdoor stock), seatbelt OD green sling and had the retro engravings done on the lower. I'd love a 601 but it would have to come with the 1/14" twist barrel.

This is really a good shooter's rifle. Nice, plain without all of the unnecessary bits. If I were to take it to a fighting type setup, maybe a fence around the mag release, removable carry handle for later when or if your eyes need it and captive takedown pins. Most customers aren't going to be clearing rooms or fighting with it. Definitely my favorite AR style. 20 round magazines as well. We aren't doing suppressive fire either. Hits count.

I'm curious about the barrel. At the very beginning of the video you said it was nitrided, and at the end you said it had a chrome-plated bore and chamber. Which one is correct?

@@joelerk6298 It was a lot of work I got the lower from Brownells with slick side bolt bolt carrier and stock set. I got the Triangle charging handle , front pivot pin, 3 prong duckbill flash hider, rear sight and slip ring grey color from Luth. I got the dimpled safety selector, Original bolt catch , rear dimpled receiver pin and dimple mag catch with mag release button with horizontal lines from John Thomas. I got original Colt FCG, Rear buffer tube grey color, Steel grey color trigger guard , A1 ejection port cover with stainless steel color spring from Retro Rifles and the upper from Nodak Spud it was hard to find all grey color parts but I got it done took me 2yrs to get all the parts about 20 mins to assemble and fire my 601 smile!

      @joelerk6298 Před 3 lety

@@todd2048 how is the fit of the Nodak upper receiver with the BRN 601 lower, is it ok? I'm my opinion the struggle of finding the parts and scavenging the internet for hours in search of the right components is a big part of the fun, plus it spreads out the cost over time which makes it easier to hide lol. I dont know if you watch SOTAR but he is doing a video series of building a 100% clone of the original top charger ar15 using a BRN proto as a base. He also did a 601 build using an original parts kit and a BRN receiver. Might be Interesting if you into cloning.
