      Honestly I’d shoot the two sports pretty similarly so I’d say fairly similar lenses. Only difference with soccer is you’re not usually running up and down but rather parking it in one spot so probably need a slightly longer lens to compensate for that (something like a 100-400mm or a 200-600mm)

    Great footage- I am loving my FX 30 as well!! In a fast moving game did you ever notice issues with rolling shutter (I have had no issues with that - but I shoot fashion so it's not gonna 'push' the camera to the limits...)?

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  Před rokem +2

      The rolling shutter on the fx30 is actually noticeably better than the A7iv that I was using to shoot game action previously. If I’m being honest though I’ve never had a client or external person who doesn’t know cameras ever watch my videos and actually comment on rolling shutter regardless of camera being used, so as long as it isn’t abysmal it isn’t very high on my list of concerns when filming.

      @@petersarellas That's my impression from what I have seen from others- it seems the sensor readout is under 15ms- not bad- and unless you spend your day shooting airplane propellers or fan blades it really isn't obvious to the viewer... • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  Před rokem +1

      Depends on budget, but the Sony 18-105mm f4 is a good versatile one that’s pretty affordable, the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 can be had for fairly cheap used (look for the older version to save some $ if you don’t need the newest features) and the Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 is a solid fast lens with a wide zoom range that could be good if you’re cool with spending a bit more. Hopefully that gives you a few options to start looking into as you begin your research.

    Hey Peter,
    I've been using the FX-30 for over a month now. I shoot primarily football. With the 70-200 with the apsc crop when do you decide to shoot 120 vs 60 fps? I know there is an added like 1.6 crop when shooting in 120. Is it best to use 120 when out of the redzone? Thank you!

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  Před rokem +2

      Although it might seem counterintuitive given the greater crop I actually use 120fps in the red zone exclusively since I want to capture those high intensity moments at higher frame rates without shooting hundreds of GBs per game. It’s easier for me to compensate for the crop since end zones are larger in Canadian football than in American football so I can usually take an extra step or two back at the back of the end zone and get a shot.

      @petersarellas  Před rokem +1

      Usually try to go 120fps when I know a key moment is coming up if possible (ex. When in the red zone). S&Q when I don’t need audio like most times during pregame (there’s usually very loud music blasting in the stadium that would get copyrighted anyways). Mostly do it this way to save space on my SD cards. Will also drop to 60fps if I need to in order to get a good exposure, which depends on my camera + lens combo and the day.

      Hey there! I found that you can’t bring the ISO on the FX30 as high as on some other cameras, so I’d try to keep it no higher than 4000 ISO at absolute most if possible. Also make sure you’re overexposing your slog3 image by 1.66 stops. That isn’t a blanket fix and depends on your specific scene but generally overexposing by that much and bringing the highlights down in post is a great way to reduce noise with slog3 images.

    Hey brother. Great video. I thoroughly enjoyed your review, but I've got a few questions. How did you shoot at 120fps and have both slo-mo footage and 24fps real time footage on the same timeline? See, If I were to shoot at 120fps and interpret the footage to 24fps, the 120fps footage would look buttery smooth and slo-mo on the 24fps timeline, but now that the timeline is set to 24fps, I'd have to actually shoot the original footage at 24fps for it appear real-time.
    Am I wrong to say that I'd have to shoot at 24fps footage for anything to appear real time on this respective 24fps timeline?
    Bdw, If I shot with two cameras, one at 120fps and one at 24fps, I could totally make it work, but the issue that confounds me here is that you seem to have used one camera set at 120fps, but you somehow managed to change between 120fps and 24fps on the same timeline!
    Any help is welcome buddy! The only solution that I can come up is that you may have speedramped the 120fps footage on the 24fps timeline for the sections that you wanted to appear real-time?
    More power to you buddy.

    • @Nypics
      @Nypics Před rokem +1

      You can shoot everything at a faster fps and place it in a 24fps timeline- add motion blur to the non slow-mo footage, and then you can slow down the sections you choose with a 'proper' shutter speed and frames. Easier and better to add in motion blur than try to sharpen footage shot with a slower shutter and create 'interpolated' frames IMHO.

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  Před rokem +2

      At @nypics said above, just shooting higher frame rates and placing on a 24fps timeline, then speed ramping to slow the footage down as desired

      Purposely shooting with a fast shutter at high frame rates bc I think it looks cool for sports. 120fps can be noisy in low light but this game was daytime so I was able to shoot at base ISO and had no issues. If filming in low light scenarios I’d likely opt for 4k60 with a more standard shutter and keep ISO as close to the 2nd base ISO of 2500 as possible.

      If you were to pair it with a relatively fast zoom lens that has a wider side to it like the Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 then it can be good. Given the low light performance vs it’s full frame counterparts and how dimly lit high school gyms can be though you may be better off going with a full frame camera like the A7iv or even the A7iii depending on how much you’re looking to spend so that you can take advantage of the low light performance of a larger sensor.
