    Thanks for the video. Not sure why youtube put it in my feed, but I am glad it did. I am a bit surprised / amazed at how you follow the ball (or the player with the ball) when using autofocus. I would have assumed that one would either track one player (and then focus would be off when following a pass or shot because it would still be tracking the player who HAD the ball), or if not using tracking, then the autofocus would just jump to whichever player is closest. Am I missing something here? Are you secretly using manual focus???

    • @BeyondTheGame_E
      @BeyondTheGame_E  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Secretly?? Is shooting manual something to be ashamed of? 😂 jokes aside, I do film manual sometimes but very rarely. When moving away from a player as fast as we do when we follow a pass or a shot, the camera doesn’t have time to focus on players that might be in the background during the camera movement. So since I film at F4, as long as the ball is roughly as far from me as the player was, it should stay in focus.

      @BeyondTheGame_E  Před 5 měsíci

    • @BeyondTheGame_E
      @BeyondTheGame_E  Před 5 měsíci

      Happy to help! But I don't think you necessarily need a new lens un less you think the 70-200mm focal length is overkill. It is nice to be able to get close-up shots. I would say, start by staying closer to 70mm and practice the tricks mentioned in the video. The more comfortable you get, the more you can start zooming in as you get better at it. Or you can also get a tripod.

    • @The_WarL0rd_Way
      @The_WarL0rd_Way Před 5 měsíci

      @@BeyondTheGame_E The only reason I say a different lens is when I'm court side 70mm is so close that all I get is their head and shoulders. I watch another person filming with a 24mm right under the basket. His videos were really good.

    • @BeyondTheGame_E
      @BeyondTheGame_E  Před 5 měsíci

      Ah yeah well that’s the dilemma of sports videography. You can rarely cover everything in high quality with one single lens. Different situations call for different lenses. But the 35-150mm I used in this video is a good all-rounder for basketball.

    Well i thought this is basic knowledge, i use my face as the third point of contact since my camera has an nice big eyepiece. I find it too that videokameras work better for sports filming than dslr cameras plus i would say that a shoulder mount is the best way to get steady shots of sports, like sometimes one needs to pan super quickly and the there is nothing that works as well as a shoulder mount. I film mostly extreme sports like skating, bmx, rollerblading and car racing/drifting and close shots can be a split of a second and the fact that my face and the upper body is main point of contact i can manoeuvre much faster whit less respons time. But this is all preference and muscle memory one can do great work whit almost any tools if done right!

      This is difficult to explain. I suggest you try it yourself. For example take a lens with an 85mm focal length and try to shoot an object while only using your elbows pressed against your stomach for support. Then, add a belt as an additional point of support and try to shoot the same object again. You will be very surprised. I have a BMPCC 4K camera and fully manual lenses, so I know what I'm talking about since I don't have any stabilization assistance at all. :)) Part of the load will be distributed to the strap, another part to your elbows and stomach, and your camera will feel even more stable. With an 85mm lens, I can shoot almost as steadily as with a 16mm lens.

    • @BeyondTheGame_E
      @BeyondTheGame_E  Před 5 měsíci

      The main reason for that is the popularity of vertical videos. You kind of have to do some sort of tracking to keep your subject in frame if you filmed horizontally. I don't have a favorite focal length per say. Variety is the key for me. But I always use a full frame camera and make the most of the full frame sensor. Although there is a bit of a crop when I film in 4K/120p.

    • @BeyondTheGame_E

      The technique is the same for any focal length. But at some point you will need some type of support to stay stable. 400mm is extreme and filming handheld at that focal length for more than a few seconds without shakes is almost impossible.

    • @BeyondTheGame_E
      @BeyondTheGame_E  Před 5 měsíci

      It’s actually extremely hard to use a gimbal when filming sports unless you keep a very wide frame at all times. If you have a tighter shot and try to follow the action, a gimbal will be way to slow to keep up and you’ll always be behind the play.
