  • According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), as of 2023, nearly four in ten Americans are considered obese. A widely-known and effective strategy to combating obesity is engaging in regular and effective exercise behaviors. However, adopting and sticking with an exercise program remains an elusive challenge for many people due to the lack of effective exercise plan organization and structure. This presentation, as part of a colloquium series on Applied Health and
Exercise Science developed by the Science Center within the ASC, will highlight a specific technique used to plan, structure, and execute a successful exercise routine known as periodization. This presentation seeks to accomplish three interrelated objectives: 1. Discuss the concept and philosophy of exercise periodization, 2. Explore the structure and terminology associated with a periodized approach to fitness training, and 3. Explore various strategies and best practices for how to design a periodized plan
for optimal fitness training. Finally, this session will provide an interactive forum for exchange of best practices and effective time-proven techniques others have used.
