  • Over the last few years cushcores have been a staple in almost all of our bikes. Generally April and I run the XC inserts front and rear but we were really excited to check out the new Trail inserts for our longer travel bikes. I figured this would be a good chance to share the fastest way I’ve found to install them too! Hope you enjoy!

    This helped me a ton! I just installed a cushcore trail for the second time today. First time took me over an hour. Today took me 10min, and was so much less frustrating!!
    The biggest help is understanding how to push the tire into the center channel of the wheel to help get the last bit of the tire on

    Spot on! Beading up the tire prior to putting in the insert is key! I did this in May of this year with a Vittoria Airliner. The back tire I pre-beaded and the front I didn't. The front took forever for me to be able to air it up. That is a nice presta inflator you have! I have always taken the core out and manually held the air gun onto the value to pop the bead in place since I don't have a presta inflator. Great work Kyle! Also, great work in DC recently!

    Interesting way of installing them and I may try this technique next time, But I've never had an issue installing them per their instructions. I only run the XC version, and I didn't notice if the one you installed has the cutouts like the XC ones do. But I always make sure the valve is in one of the cutouts since it makes inflating your tire or refreshing your sealant easier.

    This also works for asymmetric rims too, but you want to unseat the tire on the short side of the rim.

  • @pauleddy5146
    @pauleddy5146 Před 8 měsíci

    Yep, that works. I can't allow sealant in the wild or I make a mess. My hand strength is not what it used to be, so I need leverage any way I can get it. I have done it that way the last 2 times (although I didn't seat the tire first) like installing a tube, but add the sealant through the valve after I set the bead and before I reinstall the valve core. Another step, but I have more time to do that than clean up a mess.

  • @netposerx
    @netposerx Před 8 měsíci +1

    Great tips. I've struggled on some rims with CushCore. My Ibis Ripmo has an asymmetrical rim so you have to get the bead on the long side first or it's near impossible to get on.
    And I would use a syringe to get sealant into the tire as it can be less messy.

  • @hardmtnbiker
    @hardmtnbiker Před 8 měsíci +2

    This is the method that I use w/o the “pre” bead set. But the point is to use a tire and CushCore that has been setting in the sun and stretching the CushCore. For extra hands I use Velcro straps to hold in the CushCore as I insert around the rim.

    I run Magic Mary tyres on my bike's front wheel. The first time I put one on (no cushcore) it took me way over the 5 minutes in this video 🤣It was painful! Literally, my hands were so sore I could barely hold the bars once I had the wheel back on. So, props for doing that and the cushcore in the time. I put a Hans Dampf on the rear. That was almost as painful.

    I’m glad I’m not the only one that has trouble getting that Park Tool inflator to seal with the valve. I saw your first video with the 5 gallon bucket and wondered why you didn’t use the tire installer- Rubbermaid edition. Glad to see it in use. Really does help me with that task. Question- why don’t you place the sealant in the valve core last? Does the crushcore block it?

    I don't think it would take 4 minutes with DD or DH casing tires on a DH rim haha. I had FR560s on my old bike, just doing tire changes was quite a challenge, metal DH levers were necessary for those rims. Though I think these trail inserts may be a great option for more casual enduro and park riders vs the pro which is really aimed more at DH and enduro racers.

    I haven't tried cush core or similar inserts yet. Maybe I don't ride hard enough to merit them? I run around 20 psi in my cross country tires and 22 with my E mtn. I don't have any rim damage or flats. Tubeless of course with Stans. Am I missing something ?

    • @KevinT3141
      @KevinT3141 Před 8 měsíci +1

      I think we don't ride hard enough, lol.
      I'm actually still on tubes, 23 psi front, 25 rear per the SRAM pressure calculator and my riding style. I do both the dry and wet calculation, average the two, and round to the nearest psi; since I certainly haven't got anything that measures with decimal points. I recalculate whenever my weight changes by more than 5 lbs. I've lost 70 lbs since I started mountain biking 4 years ago, and it's been great watching my tire pressures drop along the way. I used to just pump tires to their max minus 5 psi, this feels soooo much better.
