    Basically any song off their first 4 albums you can't go wrong with. The opening riff is a distorted bass, distorted guitar comes in second, the closing riff is guitar and bass as well, the chorus is just power chords and bass, super simple but effective.

    • @GilBellamy
      @GilBellamy Před rokem +16

      You can't call anything produced by Muse "simple". There are layers over layers over layers of stuff in all their songs.
      The chorus is in no way "just power chords". Look up the music sheet for the guitar. And most of the melody in the chorus comes from the bass line and the synths. It is super complex in terms of production and arrangement.

    • @alexshadowfax1119
      @alexshadowfax1119 Před rokem +10

      @@GilBellamy I'm just talking about the bulk of the song, if you watch live, Matt is playing simple power chords, and Chris is playing a very simple bass melody, now the studio version I'm sure has plenty of layers and is complicated. Have a great day.

    I recently went back down the Muse live performance rabbit hole on youtube. Still one of the best live bands of all time. If you spend more time exploring their music pre-2010 you'll find they are heavily influenced by classical composers and a lot of softer tracks make you feel like you're in a western movie, as well as the spacey vibes. Get well, Geebz! Your analysis was pretty spot on for a lot of this song, in my opinion. it's the Bass line that's driving the whole song. That intro is all bass and one of the best bass lines ever. This album is also peak Muse from back when they were considered Alternative Rock. The electronic/synth elements gained more room in their compositions around the album "Black Holes and Revelations" and (in my opinion) went overboard on "2nd law". Muse unfortunately lost me on their latest album, "Simulation Theory". It's so far from their sound and the compositions are just weaker.
    A suggestion for a chain of songs that should give you a good indication of their sound evolution:
    - "Sunburn", "Muscle Museum", "Cave", "Uno" (from "Showbiz" 1999)
    - "Plug-in Baby" or "New Born" (from "Origin of Symmetry" 2001)
    - "Time is Running Out", "Sing for Absolution", "Stockholm Syndrome", or "Butterflies and Hurricanes" (from "Absolution" 2003) // This entire album is a masterpiece
    - "Starlight", "Supermassive Black Hole", or "Knights of Cydonia" (from "Black Holes and Revelations" 2006)
    - "Uprising" or "Undisclosed Desires" (from "The Resistance" 2009) // I think this album would appeal a lot to you. It ends with a 3-part orchestral suite.
    - "Madness" or "Supremacy" (from "The 2nd Law" 2012)
    - "Dead Inside" or "Psycho" (from "Drones" 2015)
    - "Dig Down" (from "Simulation Theory" 2018)
    Now if you want a broad representation of their sound, I'd go with: "New Born", "Butterflies and Hurricanes", "Uprising", "Madness". (Stockholm Syndrome would be on there, if you hadn't reacted to it already).

    maybe you already know it, but i think his music needs to be analysed and maybe more popularity.
    he entered the guinness world record 4 times for the biggest concerts ever.
    i think you need to react and decompose to full albums like oxygene, rendez vous and equinoxe, or something more strange like zoolook.

    Great groove going on with _Hysteria,_ and as always the bass playing is super forward in the mix and very punchy and loud, they do quite a lot as a 3 piece band.
    My dad always remarked about the band Boston having this phenomenal "Wall of Sound" as they called it (which they absolutely do!) and for a 3 piece band, Muse definitely gives you a lot to hold onto with their music.

      The fifth album, The Resistance, is thematically about a revolution against our wealthy overlords. The entire album is so cleanly overproduced it sounds like it was written and performed by robots. I've heard songs from it, usually "Uprising", in various commercials, movie trailers, sporting events many times over the years. The glaring contradiction of listening to a song about fighting the man being used to sell me stuff is annoying. The fact that Muse still sounds like an android factory is why they're not as good anymore. They lost their soul. I still love "Madness" though.

Whats always done it for me, as a local band rock/metal drummer, is how the drums push and evolve the heavy sections, which might normally have been the job of an extra guitar line or a vocal florish etc. Dom doesn't just play his same beat across the bars, he adds a bit, adds a bit, builds it up, grows the tension. Second comment after listening to your commentary. Muse is a 3 piece and Bellamy does the guitar and vocals in addition to keyboard. There are live songs where the drummer and bassist are playing but Matt Bellamy is singing and playing keyboard. He has his guitar on his back and then will step back from the keys and rip on guitar.
    So you're correct in that it's sometimes keys and sometimes guitar but it's always a bassist and drummer. They just put some cool effects on the bass (see Time is Running Out).

    Hey man, love the channel! This was one of the bass songs I practiced for weeks to nail down.
    I have a a song that I do not see many reactions to that I would love to see your take. I have hesitated to request it in the past because it is probably one of the most emotionally powerful songs I have ever heard, to the point that even as one of my favorite songs, I do not listen to it often.
    If you are interested, the song is Nothing More - Fade In / Fade Out
    If you end up listening I strongly suggest watching the music video. Gets me every time.

      Yep. And believe it or not, what he plays in the chorus is more difficult to play than the main riff.

      I love playing along to this song on bass. By the end of the "chorus" section of the solo, my left arm feels like it's about ready to fall off.

    • @gasolineandwine
      @gasolineandwine Před rokem

      @@fabioriato Not to sound cocky, but I find that the main riff is harder than the chorus. It's got sustained notes which lets your right hand rest a little, and the "shape" of what is being played isn't overly complex.

      @dalianmoya Před rokem

      @@paramourcat it’s funny because Matt made the main riff on guitar and then had Chris play it, and I guess that was boring because Chris made that chorus OBNOXIOUS

    This is a brilliant and classic Muse song. The guitarwork is great, but as many others said, it's all about the bass on this one. I'm always amazed by Chris Wolstenholme, powering and ripping through this bassline with just his fingers. I can play it on guitar, but the bass is another story. Still practising hard haha!
    Love to see you do more by Muse, maybe a Spotlight Session? Keep it up, Aloha!

    Each album they explore a new genre. Simulation theory was very 80s electro synthwave driven, Drones was heavy metal, and their newest album coming out now is more EDM-y. Each genre is a journey in itself.

    Nice. I might be by myself, but there new stuff (the latest album not currently out yet) is not that good. But they do have a lot of different Genres under there belt. Lots of great songs. Starlight, Madness, New Born, Supermassive Black Hole, Supremacy, Panic Station, Psycho, Unintended, Sing for Absolution, Reapers, Knights of Cydonia, Dead Inside, Uprising, etc. LOTS of good ones.

      Starlight, Unintended, Sing for Absolution are fine songs and all, especially as vocal performances, but there are easily like 6 other songs on Sim Theory that I would rather listen to. Plenty of good old songs and newer ones.

    Chris (the bassist) uses a fuzz pedal for his bass - or, at least, did, in their nitty gritty days and before a more established live engineering/mixing/4th member.
    This track is REALLY fun to learn as a bassist. Again, another difficult bassist track though lol this one because it's so much over the place, not because of the pace. That's what makes it so fun to play though, actually much fun in the same way Something by The Beatles is.
    Edit: Prince - Kiss also use a fuzz pedal for the bass. I'm surprised - or at least was, with my inspirations and learning bass when I did - how many don't hear or pay attention to the details in bass riffs, effects, technicals or melodies, or even octave changes or dualing
    This song is just as heavy live by the way with just as much distortion, except in most -at least older cases - the vocals were more reverby or stadium like kind of, so, well, maybe compression in studio but not only that. They're greater live than in studio for the most part, which is insane.
    If you listen to a live clip sometime, make sure it's line recorded properly or at least have decent sound quality but idk how best to achieve that, a music DVD maybe. YT sound compression is crap for the most part, at least I feel that way.
