"Voodoo & Palmettos": The Miami Industrial Train Scene in 2020

  • Time for a special package. Nearly 40 minutes of freight and switching action captured all within Miami-Dade County.
    We feature a lot of the industrial action that modelers and railfans alike have come to study and visit Miami for. CSX's Downtown Spur gets a cameo, we get some switching on CSX's East Rail, and we visit FEC's Central Industrial Section and Medley Lead for some action. Run-bys and scenes you can't mimic anywhere else in the country appear in this package. Yard jobs are predominantly featured, but FEC trains 109 and 202 make some appearances for good measure as I'm able to get those during these chases. Now among all of these, I'd have to say the biggest highlights are getting FEC GP38-2 #511, the last in the full Going Places in Florida livery, and CSX Y322's consist working East Rail industry Salco Enterprises in broad daylight.
    To see the model railroad version of East Rail and the Downtown Spur, check out Lance Mindheim's website www.lancemindheim.com. You will also find blog posts pertaining to a possible East Rail reboot that I've been mentioning, and look forward to. I've also visited his Downtown Spur layout on two occasions, and videos are posted here.
    Some of the territory is summarily featured, so you may benefit from checking out the playlist I have titled "Voodoo and Palmettos" to see some of the switching in better detail. • Voodoo and Palmettos

    I wish the Downtown Spur and East Rail fortunes would turn around and there would be enough business demand to warrant renewed rail service into those areas. Some new and busy shipper at the extremity of the Downtown Spur and more happening at East Rail would bring tears to my eyes. "Voodoo & Palmettos" is some of the coolest railroading anywhere.

You know quite a lot about this area, and I love all the details you give about the switching operations, industries, time of day when they typically work, etc. I found it very interesting that they chose to keep a buffer car while they were switching the LPG cars at AmeriGas. Is a buffer car always required or just preferred by the crew?

    Hello Tolga! Great job on this one, this is one of your best videos so far! Awesome intro too! Just a question: I know a lot about CSX, bit not much about FEC. Where is the best place to catch daytime FEC trains? I’d like to take a trip to see them, but I’m not much for nighttime railfanning. Anything inbetween 6am and 8pm, I’ll catch. Any suggested locations?
    Thanks.

      @TolgaEastCoast  Před 3 lety

      Thanks a million!
      In SFL the Hialeah-Medley area will usually keep you a little busy between the early morning and noon. Traffic quiets down once 202 leaves but occasionally 109 is late or port train meddles around at 2pm. The lull is usually 2-4:30 where the 5am yard job comes back and sometimes they kick the 11am job out west.

That said our collaborative project is in the queue but like this video has been pushed back for one reason or another. I take enjoyment in providing local content as well as those from travels and the like for the community, so sharing and putting out what I and/or my circles experience/opine on matter most.
