- This is a maple bowl I had turned to a ruff stage, then let dry for 2 years. It developed a crack on one side, as it dried. I addressed this by cutting the cracked section off and building a segmented section to take it's place. Then I tuned the whole thing down to a finished piece.
The lathe is a Powermatic 2442
The band saw is a 1947 36" Fay and Egan

What an amazing shop, but tools alone don't work the magic that you achieved. You did what I thought was impossible. It was a pleasure watching the hands of a master at work! The finished product is breathtaking!
Looks great! I have never done any woodworking, but I now feel the urge to go out and acquire woodworking tools!
this has to be the most ingeneous way of fixing a crack that i have ever seen, fantastic finish
have not done any wood turning in 18 years this does inspire me to do some more cheers for such a great vid
Wow, this takes real skill to make! Incredibly beautiful!!!
Wish I had some of your woodshop machinery, equally impressive!
Thank you for a very creative demo, learned a lot, mostly that it would take me years to master these skills! I'll never begrudge a high price for a bowl like this after seeing how much work it takes to make one.
One more thing. You have an amazing workshop, The bandsaw is in a class by its self. I find myself more than a little envious.
Wonderful to see a real artisan at work.
This (to me) is as much art as it is functional.
Out of what looked like a major imperfection came a thing of beauty! Art imitating life, wouldn't you say?
You were right...that added thin piece gave it some 'artistic' balance and I think it came out wonderfully! Great job!!
Awesome job Frank. I love the segmented bowls they look absolutely gorgeous, stunning and fabulous.
Thank you for your sharing of how to make this bowl. I really appreciated your sharing the problems you had. We all are learning with every project. Well done!
I really enjoy this video. I've watched it a few times now. It's great to see your design and assembly process, with certain parts sped up. The editing gives the information that is interesting and matters without the boring details. Nice work!
Stunning project, segmented inserts really make the bowl look very classy.
Thanks for sharing.

Excellent way to creatively fix your bowl. Nice shop!
Frank, I am new to CZcams and will be posting more each day. GworXTaiwan. What I really like about your video with the bowl is your readiness to admit shortcomings when they happen. And, your results are astounding. Thanks for sharing.

You do beautiful work, Frank. There's something magical about working with wood.
I watched a lot of your videos and I think you are a master woodworker and very inspirational. I envy some of your large machines.
Keep the videos coming
Many thanks,
Alan in Ireland.
Great job, I always appreciate a video that shows the creative process, warts and all. The problem solving aspect of projects are what I find to be the most interesting.
First video I've ever watched from you, and dealing with bowl turning. That was amazing.
glad you liked it.
I must say, simply amazing. I am always amazed by what can be made with wood, but I really like the accent wood pieces you added on.
Beautiful bowl Frank. Love your work. Wishing I had a shop like yours.
Those machines have some SWEET sounding motors. Amazing like an art piece! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for taking the time to do and post your videos. Beautiful bowl.
I love this bowl Frank, really great work.
Great job, the word that you used 'perfect' was an understatement.!
Holy crap that "wire jigsaw" is aweseome! I want one like that for granite... Final result is fantastic!! Gj!
HI Frank, i love your videos and this bowl is really nice, your band saw is a beast, I have never seen such a deep cutting saw with a quite small blade, they really knew how to make machines back then. Keep making your videos, they are entertaining as well as instructive and inspiring , thanks again, Phil, Hereford UK
Frank you always amaze me thank you for sharing your wonderful and stunning work with us. This is awesome and breathtakingly beautiful.
The asymmetrical wood texture gave it a nice modern look.
Two works of art, great video and a stunning bowl, funny how these things work out sometimes, thank you for sharing this.
You are a master at this type of bowl. They’re amazing.
I wish we could keep a saw blade sharp for more than three seconds at work. Watching you resaw that walnut...
Great videos, thanks for taking the time.
Beautiful bowl and fantastic directions! Thanks for sharing this!
Mr. Howarth. Great videos and wow what a shop you have!
Beautifully done, I really want to thank you for your tutorial. Iv'e always wanted to do this and I have a bunch of rough turned maple bowls at home that I could try this out on. One of our turning club members does this kind of work once in awhile and he tried to explain the method of doing this but I didn't quite pick up what he was telling me but now with your video I'll be able to give this a shot when I get a bigger lathe again, I was kinda forced to sell mine when times got bad but hope to get one soon again. Thanks again for your detailed video on how this is done. :)
Thank you Ron, I hope you get back into turning.
Man you have got some HUGE tools....I have a foruteen inch band saw and a six inch jointer and a thirteen and a half inch planer..I make smaller bowls and I envy people who have those huge tools and can do monolithic sized pieces.
Beautiful bowl... Great idea to replace the bulge/crack. Made quite an amazing art piece. Also... I'm jealous of your shop.
wow what a beast of a bandsaw you got there, and the sander too, very beautiful bowl
what a project! I really enjoyed watching and the result is perfectly stunning
Nice save on the bowl! I hope you thank the tool gods every day for that shop!!! :)
I’m a deranged lunatic that suffers from anxiety. These videos are calming.
Pure genius! Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Gord
I thought I'd watch first few minutes, but you kept to going... An amazing piece of work!
Greetings from Egypt. Sir, you are an artist. My hat comes off for you. Thank you for sharing.
Really beautiful. Thanks for sharing this project.
great video, well done - very useful to me (I'm just a beginner). happy to see that someone is still using linseed oil and beeswax to finish wood. thanks a lot!
All your bowls... I think I like this one most.
I really like that bowl. Great fix! I also found it hilarious that you have all those high end power tools and only ONE chuck! Bwahahaha! Just awesome.
such an amazing job, you turned this block to masterpiece
You are a Genius!
I'm from Brazil and just can't stop watching your work!!!
=D
Beautiful work, Frank! I love this technique. I've seen a few other artisans on CZcams accomplish similar effects to great success, as well. I hope it holds up... I was thinking about expansion and contraction while I was watching, too. I think even if you did orient the grain parallel, different species and densities like that... there's a lot of stress gonna happen at those joints over time. If they do come apart, it's just an excuse to make new ones, though! :)
Beautiful art piece of a bowl and great inspirational video.
That band saw is a monster!
Fantastic work, the bowl look great !
"and then let dry for two years"
Wow you have a LOT more patients than I do!!
Looks great. Fast thinking on the repair work; it turned out nicely.
What a wonderful piece of art! a very creative way to save a bowl..inspiring! thanks for sharing //Kenneth
Very nice pot.
Much work, it is worth to see and to learn.
For me that's art.
Yes, I have my eye on the work I have done like this. I'm hoping the pieces are not big enough to form a crack. I have had a few similar bowls 3 or 4 yeas so far and they are ok. You are right it's a concern.
Amazing. Is this what you do for a living, or is it a hobby?
That stripe makes it super cool.
That was awesome mate. I really thoroughly enjoyed watching that. Well done.
Thanks, this is inspiring. The bowl is beautiful, and your explanation of the process is, clear.
When you power up that band saw it sounds like Hoover Dam starting up. Amazing equip you have/have access to.
I just love your turnings, it must make your brain hurt, thinking of all the ways to make it your piece.
I simply can't get enough of your videos. You obviously put a lot of time into the filming and editing of your projects as well. I hope this question isn't being nosey or something... I was wondering about the two curved chunks of wood in the background at about 12:04, when you're taking the bowl off the chuck. Were they for another project that you've not had a chance to post yet? They look interesting. It obviously takes a bit of time for you to do all the filming and editing as well as the projects themselves, so I understand why you don't put out videos every other day... even so I wish you would. :-) Thanks for sharing with us your wonderful work.
It is awesome and stunning Mr Howard when you start cutting the imperfect pieces, I know somethiing fantastic is about to happen
I want to turn into a bowl right now.
Very nice bowl. I like it and to see how it was made.
What a beautiful piece of art..
Amazing segmentation. Great job!
gorgeous! Well executed... that looks like so much fun and has to be very satisfying when finished.
This looks like an awesome hobby.
Wow is all I can think or say. What a masterful work.
MAN that is one beautiful bowl! Great job, sir :)
That bandsaw is HUGE!
Nice work, I enjoy watching your videos.
Thanks, it's been a hobby but I am working towards making it something more than that.
thank you. the bandsaw is a 1947 36" Fay and Egan
A masterpiece! PS: either you are 4 feet tall or you have the biggest woodworking machines I have ever seen!
Beautiful work....Thanks for posting!
Bravo....a lot of work, but a very beautiful bowl.
Beautiful bowl and great save on the cracked bowl. Thanks so much for sharing. :)
A beautiful and elegant solution.
A+ on both the bowl and your editing!!
Great work! you seem to have all the needed tools! Its hard to do certain things without the correct tools. I like that strap clamp i used a ratchet strap recently! Good work thanks for the vid!!
The second thin strip was a good decision. Looks good.
Awesome video. That bandsaw is bigger than my shop!
this is so cool, you did an amazing job!
This is a great example of how to make a misfortune work to your advantage. I really like the result. Congrats.
Videos like this can inspire some, just looks like a lot of toolsto make a bow, but it is very beautiful
Wonderful, woooonderful piece! Congratulations!
Frank - I thought I had a pretty good show; but now I have shop envy! OMG your shop is amazing could I have it? lol Oh, beautiful work too.
Beautiful piece, loved the project, and thanks for the occasional speed ups, hehehe...
You have some really big machines!
