Segmented Woodturning and the Pantorouter

  • I have wanted to introduce curves into the patterns of segmented woodturning. Kuldeep Singh offered to send me one of his all metal pantorouters and I thought this would allow me to cut curves into the patterns of segmented turning. I started with a maple bowl I rough turned about a year ago and added a walnut ring to the top. I then used the pantorouter to make 12 holes in the bowl as well as the plugs to fit perfectly in those holes. I tuned to bowl ring and rain drop shaped plugs on the lathe into a finished 14 inch diameter bowl.

It's awesome that the mention of your name is almost expected when a pantorouter is lurking about. Kuldeep is representing overseas, homie. Matthias has us covered in North America.
I sometimes complain about the machine CZcams has turned into but there's no denying that community still exists. Instead of hundreds of little niches being filled, there's tens of thousands, big and small, communities around the globe flourishing and growing daily.
300 hours of content is uploaded to CZcams, every hour of every day. When you think about it, it's amazing that we're all 'here' to enjoy this drop in a massive ocean. G.

This is my second time watching the video, and thought of something that may be useful. Your comment about worrying about the bowl slipping on the pantorouters table. You may have discovered that clamping alone as you did works fine, but for added security here's an idea. If you took a piece of MDF (for it's flatness), mount it to the top of the table with sandpaper fixed to it with spray adhesive then clamp it the same way. The mdf would be easy to mount with all those tracks. Might not be relevant to this application but maybe others or for other people where a solution like this may make the difference in a project succeeding or turning into firewood you worked days on. Enjoyed the video..........twice.
