Wood Turned Finger Jointed Bowl

- I have wanted to wood turn a bowl from a finger jointed box. I picked out a piece of walnut and a piece of cherry. I milled each piece to the same dimension. I then made segments for a ring from these two pieces. I milled the end of each segment on the CNC router, to form a finger joint between each segment in the ring. I attached a bottom to the bowl by cutting a circle into the end of the ring to receive a round segmented bottom. I turned all of this on the lathe to the form finished bowl.

Thanks for your week and a half of futzing. We all appreciate it!
+Peter Brown Thanks Peter
frank howarth Not a woodworker but this makes me want to get into it.... why don’t you always use a chuck to just hold it instead of screwing things in?? Wouldn’t that use less material?
Your videos are such a joy to watch... The photography, lighting, editing and post production work is simply inspirational. Thank you for all your effort.
Not to mention the woodworking...
Mr Howarth your stop motion videos got my initial interest, but your ingenuity and clear appreciation of the craft of creating is truly captivating. From idea to reality is always inspiring. Thank you for sharing your skills with all of us who will watch.
Clair de Lune + Woodworking = Masterpiece
You are awesome Mr. Frank!
happy to see im not the only one who heard it :)
Frank, I am a 23 year old Mexican girl who just finished majoring in International Relations I don't even know what I'm doing here but I love your videos and I find them inspired. Every time I feel bad or have panic attacks I come here and I instantly feel much better. I wish I had the time to learn a little bit about wood working and turning.
Your works are absolute master pieces.
I do the same! His videos are very soothing and they really calm me down. :)
Frank that is incredibly beautiful! I love the experimentation and seeing the process of setting up the CNC. This is one of my favorite videos of yours!
+Make Something Thanks David
I really like the contrast of big old tools and a CNC machine. I also liked the little piano music in the background. Fascinating as always. Thanks!
You are NOT a woodworker...you ARE and ARTIST. I love your work!
Beautiful bowl and video as always! I think the CNC opened a whole new world of creativity for you! You make so awesome use out of it! Thanks for sharing!
Very cool bowl! I love the subtle concave in the sides.
The classical music inserts sounded great, the volume raising was just right. I would love to see it in more videos, it contributes to the sensation that something is being formed.
I don't use CZcams all that much but I must say, I find all your videos all such a pleasure to watch. It's always a nice moment when I see you've uploaded a new one.
Thank you!
Frank you never cease to amaze me. Lovely bowl and video. Thank you for providing such great content and ideas.
Wow, that looks amazing! Thank you for making those videos!
+Andreas Nett thank you
frank howarth
Sachini Silva
I haven't heard Clair de Lune in years. My mother used to play it on the piano when I was young. Thank you for including it in this video. It got me quite emotional. Beautiful work, as always.
You could make a fortune making custom snare drums. This bowl is beautiful and the process for putting it all together is nearly the same for stave snare drums. Beautiful work, man.
Beautiful. Great project Frank.
+RetroWeld Thanks Douglas
Wow, what a great project. What were you using to shoot the footage 6:19 - 6:24? That was a nice shot.
+April Wilkerson You caught that little bit of what looks like motion control too!
+April Wilkerson Thanks April. My phone, my arm, and a warp stabilizer in Premiere.
+April Wilkerson the steadiest hands on youtube?
+frank howarth really liked that shot. 😀
+April Wilkerson Kinda looks like footage of a drone
Blown away by this video and the quality of the finished bowl... And then very amused by the one single 'dislike'... Ain't people funny!? Thanks for being so consistently inspirational.
What a pleasure to watch a gifted craftsman do his thing. Thanks Mr Frank
Lovely bowl. And a really relaxing video too, very enjoyable!
Well done Frank - beautiful piece!
Frank. I love your videos. I've been woodworking for 30 years, but videoing my work for only a few weeks. Your videos were the inspiration for playing around with the video camera. Thanks.
+As The Wood Turned great to hear, it sounds like you have a lot to share
Wonderful to watch a dedicated craftsman make a beautiful object.Absolutely unique.
A beautiful piece of craftsmanship Frank. Thanks for sharing.
I fully agree
Unbelievably stylish and beautiful.
For the next one, I think finger jointing the bottom segments together would really carry through the design. Very nice.
IMHO, this belongs with your best bowls you have made Frank, absolutely beautiful
One stunning project, completed perfectly. Great work Frank, a pleasure to watch....yet again :)
Take care
Mike
+Mike Waldt thanks Mike
Perfect job as always, i watch every of your video with my 4 years old daughter and i get hundred of questions from her
+a Salihaj Awesome!
Frank, my favorite part about your videos is that you bridge the gap between traditional and modern craftsmanship. You are not so stubbornly traditional that you avoid the advantage of something like CNC technology, but you have the vision and classic mastery to make it artful and unique. Another simple yet fantastic project!
Compliments for your great way of both shooting, and editting of your video’s. Great material.
They got it all. Normal speed, timelapse, slowmo, stabilized, etc.
Well done.
Creative, as always
great editing!
Fabulous example of expanding our thinking on what can be done with the CNC as a support tool. Tackling a project on the lathe that would not be practical without the imaginative use of the CNC.
I like the smiles in the cherry and rings in the walnut.
Wow that's amazing
Awesome. beautiful
Hope you take this as a huge compliment, but you're like the Bob Ross of Woodworking. So extremely relaxing to watch! ;)
A great mix of old & new technology, planning, mulling it over and good old futzing -- a week well invested.
On your segment jig, couldn't you set your master wedge, tighten both arms, remove one arm, 1st cut all segments, reposition the missing arm, remove the other arm, and finally do the 2nd cut on all the wedges? This would preserve the nice center point.
+vipero00 interesting, I like that.
True art as usual. Better get a leg leveler under that radial arm saw though! LOL
Frank, it makes for very interesting looking bowl. Plus being cherry and walnut, which are very compatible woods as far as wood shrinkage, and the finger type joints makes it mechanical long grain to long grain will make a very sturdy bowl. A trick a fellow wood worker gave me once, when you want to glue a scrap for turning is to apply glue to both parts and put a sheet of news paper in-between, when your done turning, use a sharp chisel to separate scrap for the work piece , it will come off clean with out grain tear out. Works rather well.
The light switch sound at the end synced perfectly with me liking the video and I got super confused for a second lmao. The bowl looks great, really enjoyed the video too
The bottom of the bottom of the bottom!
+Volodymir Evdokimov Yea he sort of bottomed out.
+Terry Endicott
So, are we about to the bottom of all this? ;)
+KSFWG Your right, we should stop now before we hit a new low.
+Terry Endicott
You're exactly right! We certainly don't want to go lower than low with all this.... ;)
+Volodymir Evdokimov Bottomception. :P
To get your bottom disc to come to a point next time maybe make the total angle more than 360 degrees instead of under 360, as in set your sled to be 22.6 or 22.55 instead of (accidentally) 22.45. that way, when you go to sand the discs flat, the centre point wont be the excess material, the edges will.
Frank, I adore the music you have included in this Video. Please continue this new idea! One day I will have a workshop like yours and create every day like you. Amazing! Thankyou for all your videos.
I dont know if there is more beatifull the bowl or the machines in this
carpentry. Great work!
whoa that is a gorgeous bowl frank! love your creativity. do you ever sell your work online?
Looks nice maybe turn a cherry plug to fix the center
+The “Woody” Woodshop I realized while I was editing the video that I should have cut a plug on the cnc. a puzzle piece or something like that.
+frank howarth I think something like a wooden gear with curved teeth will be great for that center. It matches with curvy finger joints.
This is so beautiful. I know nothing about woodworking but feeling really inspired now. There's something about your voice that I find really relaxing. Thanks :)
Frank, as if to watching how you treat that beautiful wood with such grace and tender, wasn't enough; you have the distinctive grace to add a cherry of enchanted piano music on top. Well done, well done and thanks. -your videos has such soothing effect that lift the spirit and bring a smile to my face. On the tech note...thanks also for the slow motion capture and the slide vector movement of the camera. It was nice for sure.
Love the attitude "I had this idea..." and then you just go with it till its done... I have ideas too, but here I am watching youtube instead of actually doing something. Hmmm, time to head to the shop.
+Mike Wiebe loll were all guilty of that from time to time.
Lovely music. More Debusy, please.
Slo-mo was cool. Don't recall you using it before. Very appropriate visual aid given how thoughtful your projects are.
I hate wasting wood but man you are not wasting it you are making it alive again
I love your videos
nice work....nice tools!
+maged mahmoud Thanks
Agreed! :)
Frank, can you do a bowl like this with dovetail joints?
+Stan7670 now you have me thinking.
+frank howarth I can smell the wood burning.
i Have just recently been watching a few wood turning videos... and i have to say props tp all these people who can look at a piece of wood and visualize a stunning piece of art sitting there... i really wish i spent more time in Shop class then playing sports while in school.. cause these types of trades are used more in every day life then most people give credit for..
So awesome, Frank. Every time I watch your videos, it makes me want to buy a lathe. Your work is incredible! Would love to visit your shop sometime.
what is his job description ???

Awesome project and awesome video like always!
+pcfreak1992 There's one dislike now! :P (Not me)
A week and a half of futzing around well spent! Great job, Frank!!
Not only a cool project, but what an excellent instructional video. I see so many of these where the guy just rambles on pointlessly, or the sound is just horrible, or the camera work is worthless...but not here. VERY professional!!! Thanks
Oooh, more classic music please!
Claude Debussy....Clare de Lune....so good....
Beautiful
as someone who's only experience in DIY is skipping a few pages in the IKEA instructions, your videos are a true inspiration. keep up the amazing work Frank, I never thought wood working videos could be so fascinating. you and Mathias need a TV show.
I love this guys voice and his work! He should narrate movies or documentaries
Wow it's amaizing how you can surprise me on every video with your awesome creations. :D
This is a piece of art, Frank. Wonderful, wonderful bowl. Thank you for sharing it with us. And kudos on your patience and stop motion habilities.
This one shoot up to #2 of my all time favorite bowls you have turned. A lathe and a CNC are dangerous thing in your hands, can wait to see the compound angle bowl. Thanks so much for sharing!
Wow Frank once again you hit one out of the park even with the center not being as perfect as you were hoping. Very Nice video and great finished piece.
Wow, I didn't think I was going to be able to watch the whole video, but I was amazed all the way through. I hope people realize how much skill you have. Amazing carpentry, outstanding photography skills, and intriguing commentary. Very well done.
Such a beautiful piece. I like how the figured walnut contrasts with the straighter grain of the cherry.
Thank you for this video - it's certainly one of your best. Great angles and lighting. This music choice and editing was the first time I've ever been glad a you-tuber added a soundtrack. Beautiful build and presentation. I am inspired.
Your use of the cnc is refreshing. Unlike most other yt creators. Thanks for always thinking outside the box---or bowl!
Nice touch with that Claire de Lune - I never thought I would hear Debussy in a woodworking video, but it came out great. I love watching your videos and I get excited when I see them pop up in my subscription box.
Hello Frank, watch your videos a long time, and today I took courage to comment, you have had more complex projects, however that, more music and editing were of immense happiness. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful combination of modern CNC and classic turning. I'm really enjoying seeing how you integrate new technology into your pieces.
A-May-Zing... A true master at work. Thanks for taking us on this trip.
The way you think and work is BEYOND PERFECT ... Respect.
Who would give this a thumbs down......Beautiful project!
Nice work as usual, I am jealous of your shop.
When I was in school, my woodworking teacher taught me a trick to glue the scrap base and the bowl with a piece of paper towel sandwich in between, it would hold enough for turning then the scrap base can be just pop off and saved me a lot of time.
BTW, my kids are also a big fan of your stop motion films. Thank you, Frank!
Wow! What a thing of beauty. I love working with wood. I really liked the process you used for this project. The right tools sure do make the difference.
My school teacher put me off woodwork for life. You have sparked my interest again, what a beautiful piece!!
That’s a slick wood turning. Tons of planning and thought went into this one. Thanks for sharing!!!!
Frank, once again you have amazed me with your work... Inspirational
The slow motion shots were a great touch!
Simply amazing Frank, well done!
Nice touch with the slo-mo. Very pretty. Perfect alignment with your bottom wedges and finger-joint segments.
This was an excellent demonstration of craftsmanship on so many levels.
Your experiments are better then my full projects. Nice work.
What +Peter Brown said! This is totally awesome Frank! Crazy inspirational as always!
I have said it before and I will say it again: Mr Frank, you are THE MAN...
Absolutely gorgeous. The different grains give it a fascinating 3d moray.
This video was so delightful to watch. You’re an amazingly talented craftsman, your workshop is a dream & your voiceover was enjoyable and almost soothing. Loved.
I love your videos Frank. Enough to ignore my workshop, tool and, um, skill envy...
My friend, your skills blow my mind, I couldn't do that if I had ten years to think about it, awesome
I love the subtle music. Great video Frank!
Such a nice bowl! Also nice to see how this project arises from your previous projects. All respect for your homemade tools!
