Great idea! I would note that the plug from the interior will have a top wider that the bottom of the outside. This means you could resaw the top of the "trapezoid" interior plug off, and glue it to the bottom of the outside of the basket before cutting the outside instead of using an entirely new piece of wood for the bottom. Thanks again Stumps!
Made a few this weekend. they turned out great. Thanks a lot!
It looks like my idea of too small for another project is a lot smaller than your idea of too small.
Yeah same here. But here’s 2 thoughts: basket can be scaled down in size & you can’t store all scraps forever so the more wood you go through the more likely you’ll have larger scrap available
With my scraps, I can make a basket for paperclips hahahaha
Couldn't you make the block from a bunch of different sized glued up scrap?
@@bobalman yeah, I imagine you could even do it similar to those chaos cutting boards. I just tend to save almost everything but admittedly my garage is a mess. His scraps I would view as legit stock though & thought it funny.
@@alphafert608 Copy that. It occurred to me that you could "Frankenstein" a block and end up with something cool that could be hard to figure out how it was built. Cheers!
For extra fun, you can use the inner core to make another, smaller basket that nests inside the larger one. It will be a bit shorter since you will have to waste a bit where you entered and turned the blade.
I’m making a basket now and I’ve got 2 more from the cores and eyeing my last core for a 4th! Have to do assembly a little different since the outside is already cut when the bottom is put on but not a big deal.
Dang James! That's really nice.
I'd love to have scraps of wood that size...
I love shellac. I use it as sanding sealer on most projects. I especially like it as a total finish on items meant for food. Yes, I know that pretty much anything is food safe when dried/cured, but when a client asks me my finish is food safe I don’t need to explain the nuances.
Shellac is sometimes used as a candy coating or for enteric coated medicines. In other words shellac is eatable.
Really cool idea and a nice-looking piece, too. My wife bought me the 3M sander for Christmas, and you are right that thing is great.
"If you've been holding on to scraps..." thats every wood worker I've ever known myself included lol. Great video and idea.
Thank you for all that you do! You've consistently brought my woodworking skills to the next level bit by bit and taught me even more on how to keep my digits! Thanks again!
Very nice project!
Another good one from my boy blue!
Great project. Thanks James.
You have very nice “scraps” in your shop
Nice job 👍 looks great. It may save some waste by gluing up strips instead of whole blocks and cutting out the centre and ends. It would mean end jointing but you would have more surplus wood left over to make another matching piece. Overall a great job and a useful piece for holding things. Thank you.
That looks great!
I'm glad to see you do a project. Lets see more.
This isn't a "watch me build something" channel. This channel focuses on specific skills, techniques and shop related content. We do build a lot of things, but we rarely present them as complete project videos. Instead we use portions of those projects to teach specific skills. This video clip explains it in more detail: czcams.com/video/-S9aibzmF3w/video.html
Brilliant James, Whit a bit of planning you could actually make a nest of these I would imagine from the one initial block. You've got my brain working on this one.
Thanks James.
Tae care.
Cheers, Huw
Oh the ideas in my head. Thank you for sharing this project.
YES! As a matter of fact I will steal this idea !!! I need to make a gift for a family member and this is perfect for her!
This is a good idea, & you could even glue up the offcuts from the middle, inverted, to make a knife block (with a little help from a router or chisel)
I was wondering what to do with the center scrap. That's a good idea!
Awesome basket James!
@StumpyNubs finally someone who thinks like me! My husband and father in law literally tell me off if I jump from a project to start another. They just don't understand I need a mental break whilst I mull over a detail. While it's stewing on a shelf in the back of my mind, I find a different project helps me come back with a fresh perspective...it's the benefit of attention deficit! I can multi task...
James that's a pretty combination of species...is it maple and walnut?
Until recently I was taught you only sand with the grain...my husband gave me an orbital sander for Christmas...it's still sitting in the box. I have bad arthritis in all my joints...I find anti-vibration gloves help. For sanding inside the bowl...I'd probably wrap sandpaper around a dowel since I don't have a spindle sander...I'll invest in one someday.
As always thanks for the lesson
ANOTHER!! interesting and well done video. 👊
LOVE YOUR CHANNEL.!!
Nice. Bandsaw baskets.
Beautiful little project, James. Very much liked the small angle and perspective tricks you used for it. Cheers.
Nice easy project. I’m planning to get a Harvey this summer
Holy Moly, a *build* video! Thanks Sir Nubs, have been hearing the term "band saw boxes" for a while, but didn't really know what they were until now.
Its not a true bandsaw box because theres no top. Its a bandsaw basket I guess. Still cool and a good idea to use up some scraps.
Neat build! Perfect editing too -- all the info yet not too long. Thanks for sharing!
James - grabbed some scrap wood and made one of these bowls. It was a fun project, and you are absolutely right about the type of bandsaw blade. It made a relatively thick cut with a challenging turning radius a piece of cake. Thanks for sharing this idea. Of course, the downside is now the wife wants multipes.....and I can't get her to pay rent, let alone for woodworking projects.
Have you tried confusing her by offering a family discount and seeing if she goes along with it? Women love discounts.
Great to see a project, and that one is pretty cool. Short project ideas like this are great both for ideas, technique and entertainment - you do them so well. Thank you.
cool project
THANK YOU! So excited to try this!
Great project.
Thanks for the video, always enjoy watching!
Really beautiful work, James! 😃
Thanks a bunch for all the tips!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Looks great.
Thank you, a great project.
Answer to video title: yes
Definitely going to try this!!
Good video! Now when do we expect Cool Tools #39? These are among my favorites.
That's a great build I really like it showed the wife she wanted one. Said great I get my bigger band saw. She said she can wait lol I'm save this video for latter
Brilliant!
Looking forward to giving this a try.
Thanks. Pretty cool basket!
Thanks for sharing those tips and the make!
Slick! Great idea to thin-down just the rim-from the outside. Very elegant. Thanks James.
As long as you have more wood for the bottoms you could make a few smaller baskets from the offcuts.
outstanding!!!!
Excellent idea for scrap! Thanks 😊
Thank you! Great tutorial.
Awesome version of a bandsaw box that has a lot of uses! I'm thinking Christmas gifts for next year. Easy to batch out and then I can put smaller things in them.
Fantastic job James. Sure looks great how everything turned out. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
Beautiful little basket.
Excellent video! I'm setting up my bandsaw this weekend and will be trying this soon. Peace!
Cool
Love your work 👍
I love this! I'll definitely be making one.
Nice
I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms.
Great project. Thanks for sharing. I can see building the layers up in many ways like those amazing endgrain cutting board patterns.
I really appreciate this video. great idea!
Thanks much. That's a slick trick about back-tapering the top.
Enjoy the spring weather (when and if it comes) on your trikes. Thanks again for all you do.
Great project idea!
I just wanted to thank you. I watched your Tail Vise video and it filled in the blanks on how to incorporate that concept into my CNC table. Work like a champ an provides 99.9% accuracy because the Tail Vises I installed holds the work product with no movement and a consistent reference point. Your video helped so much, Thank You
Thank you for another great idea. And sharing all the tips and tricks along the way. You have really helped me grow as a woodworker.
What a great project. Thank you for sharing. Everyone stay warm, safe, happy and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia
Dude, those are some pretty nice scraps.
Nice little project to break that tediousness down of those long projects when you need too. Looks awesome.
That's brilliant, I reckon I could do that, nothing ventured etc, thanks, Stewart, south west Australia.
Great video have missed your videos lately hope to see more love watching your channel always great and always very helpful information and safe tips. Thanks
Nice box / container. As you said, great use of off cuts (not scrap, scrap is just an off cut waiting for the next project ). Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Using cut offs from structural glue lams turn out really cool, I like to cut mine rt in half then glue in different wood or opposite grain piece. So you can add width & radius to the center of the curved ends or can make a center divider with a hand hole cut out kinda like an wooden old tool box. I like the way u glue the bottom on before doing the outer cut. i was tracing the bottom a bit proud then sanding it flush after glue up, adding 2 extra steps . Great project Cheers
as always. Beautiful, Informative & Easy to follow.
thank you for sharing such a beautiful idea/product with simple techniques. Really love it.
I think with some care, you should be able to make nesting baskets like this.
I bought some 3M Xtract last week based on your recommendation. I used it for the first time today to sand a simple little holder for drill and driver bits that I made. I was amazed at how well it works! I just needed to smooth out some light saw marks and burn marks left by my table saw and router. Normally, I would use 80 grit paper to remove the marks quickly, then work up from there. With the 3M paper, I decided to start with 120 grit, and that 120 grit paper removed the saw and burn marks *much* faster than the 80 grit paper that I used to use, plus it lasted longer and left the wood a lot smoother. It works much better than even the expensive sandpaper than I used before, and it costs less. Great stuff!
*eyeballs all that walnut scrap sitting in my bins*
Another excellent video. Thanks, James. his is a nice variation on the stacked ring technique. But since I don't have a band saw, I'll have to stick with the scroll saw bowls.
Use that blank you cut out of the middle to make a smaller "basket" for nesting baskets sets. Probably get three... small , medium, and large... out of that one blank.
Your right. I'm totally stealing this. I think I'll work on it this weekend in-between building a new bathroom vanity.
Looks like you could keep going and make nesting baskets if you wanted. Cool idea, thanks for the content.
Removing glue squeeze-out from difficult to reach places: I keep an artist's 1/2 inch wide paint brush in water with paper towel nearby. Reach in with wet brush and gather up the glue, wipe, repeat.
So interesting. You come up with some fantastic ideas. 🌞
You plural that is. I’ll never forget the video when you showed us your production process and the whole team involved in producing this flow of videos. Credit to you all.
James, this reminded me of a toy from my childhood: nesting balls, barrels and other nestable objects. They always had a toy, candy or other surprise in the middle. Mine had a skeleton bonzai tree (it was from Japan).
It'd be fun to nest 3 of these together, each with a cap, and hide something in the center one.
Great tutorial. I use a scroll saw making similar baskets. I do stack cut and have more glue ups though. Thanks Jimmy.
I’m in the same boat as I don’t have a bandsaw. I didn’t even have scroll saw until I finished restoring my grandfather’s ‘50s craftsman a few days ago.
Great project. I see making a couple of these in the future. Quick question - you mentioned all finishes are food safe once cured. I thought that too, but have read recently that the chemicals used to make boiled linseed oil make it not food safe. Your thoughts?
My wife saw me watching this video. Guess what's on my to do list? 😬
Love this idea, could use even smaller pieces to make smaller size bandsaw boxes.
You could adjust the table angle by a couple degrees when cutting the outside so it's tapered right from the cut!
They should then nest, too. (I think)
he did adjust the table angle and it is angled right from the cut... he just sanded the tip to an even steeper angle to make it appear thinner.
@@steveholder7289 a set of 3 nested baskets/ boxes would be a nice gift.
@@Hephera He angled the cut but then cut both the inside and outside with the same 6 degree angle. I'm just saying you could try cutting the inside with something like a 8 degree angle, then cut the outside with a 5 degree angle, you could get the thin taper to the thin edge without the sanding so the side would still be flat.
cool
We plastic kit modelers use that edge sanding technique to make fenders, hatches, and other pieces appear thinner and more correct to scale as injection molding can only get them so thin before they are too fragile to use. A lot of ways to hide things you don't want your audience to see as well as accentuate what you do want seen.
Nice, I'll have to try this. Also, it's probably a good idea to sand the bottom piece to your final grit before you glue it on, since that part will be difficult to reach once it's glued up.
Riiiiiiight.. I'm really gonna go out and buy a $400.00+ sander. Sheesh!
Neat project. Our local Woodcraft has had a course called "bowl from a board" that employs the same principle, but the cuts are done on a lathe and then the glued up bowl is finish turned.
Change the cut angle when you cut the outside for a perfect taper.
It shouldn't be too hard to make "nested" boxes from the center cutoff...Like this idea.
Great idea, thanks for sharing!
As a side note, if you're ever getting rid of those scraps let me know.
My dad would make bandsaw boxes like this but he always used a scarf joint. On that he would have drawn the inside line straight through the curve. I think it would add substantial strength and glue surface.
Really clever method to make a basket. I will try it one of these days. I was thinking, you could cut the blank in half at the beginning and then cut out several layers of the sides that would later be nestable for storage or whatever. The only thing I can think of that would be complicated by nesting is the gluing of the sides back together. May need band clamps for that.
To make the most of the waste material you could easily turn that into a very nice bandsaw box that’d probably fetch more $$$ than the basket itself. Just a thought.
The cubitron sandpaper came out if I am recalling correctly around 10 or so years ago. We started using it in the large and well known cabinet company I used to work for.
I like this “elbow grease” we call it many times with rough translation “bread servo”. 😂
I've made a couple of paper thin boxes from the table saw off-cuts, when I worked in a woodshop for a couple of weeks. May I suggest trying that? By comparison, this basket seems like tons of wasted wood.
