    I just did your “hack” to my VERY old Sears& Roebuck 5 blade mower. Have St.Augustine and there wasn’t enough weight on the back, now mower rolls forward & back very smoothly. Thanks

      It was simple. I want to get out and use it. Currently 19 degrees this morning! 😭 I might sand level my terraces today regardless. We will see what the motivation is like in a few hours. 😆 Thanks for watching!

    FYI i bought the 7 blade earthwise,,used it on a newly installed putting green but it didnt cut very close,,adjusted roller to lowest height etc,,will this really cut close or did i waste money,,my toro zero turn cuts as close as the earthwise is cutting now,,,

    Just got this mower, haven't had a chance to use it due to the cold spring in MN. Love the video! Definitely going to upgrade myself. Have a mcclane push reel mower with 10 blades as well, incredibly heavy. Weight is generally good

    How do you get your reel to spin so effortlessly and without much noise? I just purchased this mower and used it for the first time, and it does not spin anywhere near as freely and effortlessly as yours. Thanks!

      Adjust the bed-knife screws so that the blade barely touches the bed-knife. If you watch my first reel video, it probably sounded the same as yours until I tinkered. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    I use a Scott's Classic reel mower on my first few cuts after a reno or just on new grass period. The lighter the better for new grass (like you, I have a Timemaster, and that's not gonna work on brand new grass very well) I wanted the Earthwise but decided against, simply because of the roller. The Earthwise, seems like a really nice reel mower and wish it came in two versions one with and without a roller.
    After watching how easy it is to remove the rollers, I'm kinda wishing I got the Earthwise and just removed the rollers in the first place.

    • @theSuburbiaDad
      @theSuburbiaDad  Před 2 lety +1

      You can remove the roller in less than 30 seconds… with a break. 😆 It has been a great reel mower so far. I really enjoy it in the space I have it for it. I wish I could reel more, but my tree debris makes it hard to head down that path. Thanks for watching!

      It seemed like it had more weight in the back. It felt good. I imagine it’s like adding weight to a driver. It doesn’t take much to notice a difference. So, it will stripe better when I cut higher... probably maintain at 1/2 inch this season. I took it as low as I could… about 3/8 inch so I could sand level. It was way more than 1/3 rule cut off. The Earthwise worked hard! Thanks for watching! Videos upcoming on the first cut and sand level.

      @@theSuburbiaDad awesome man, my goal this year too is to keep it at 1/2 inch. I did a 50/50 potting soil and play sand mix and leveled parts of my lawn over the weekend after using a rotary mower and getting the lever to go down below 1/2 inch(duck tape did it to keep the mower low low lol).

    Can you add a roller to the 5 blade 1816-16EW model? It come with small tires, not the plastic rollers

    • @theSuburbiaDad
      @theSuburbiaDad  Před 2 lety

      I’m unsure. You have a different model than me. You’d have to game plan and try.
      My next task is to try and figure out a striper for it. I want to look into mounting a push broom head somehow. I’ll have to plan that out. Let me know if you figure something out. I’m curious what option you might have.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @theSuburbiaDad

      Rolls really nice. The plastic edge of roller sometimes catches. It added a little weight. So, it’s a feel thing.

      I sorta ended up here because living in the south of france my missus inherited a house so Ive been spending the last few months getting the house in shape, I found a reel mower and in the processes of getting it back in shape I wondered why the wooden roller was so heavy. turns out it was bored wooden tube with a 2inch diameter lead pipe in it. I'm near 40 and this thing is older than I, My MIL keeps telling me to buy a petrol mower, When I was a kid i used to carry my father's reel mower round and earn pocket money, now it's fun lol

      I just got mine, same model as the one you mentioned. I've learned that Earthwise, ALM, great states, etc. are all made by the same company, just different branding. That model should be an exact copy of one in the video. Has same roller height adjustments/hardware. I'm about to purchase same roller. Should work just fine.

    • @theSuburbiaDad
      @theSuburbiaDad  Před 2 lety +1

      I can get mine to 3/8 inch. You have to adjust the wheels first. There are three options for starting height. The middle wheel setting is the sweet spot for 1/2 inch I have found. After the wheel is set, then just the back roller and go. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      @@theSuburbiaDad professional reel mowers has goven cuts per meter or foot/inch. That means how many times reel knifes will meet bed knife during 1 meter ride. The higher the less ribbon effect you will see on the lawn when cut low. I will be gratefull if you could measure wheel diameter or circumference and how many times reel will cut during one full wheel rotation.
