By far the simplest, shortest most direct video on this I have ever seen. Thank you! Btw if anyone wonders this is exactly how you do the other 20" reels too (Scotts, Lee Valley, Earthwise, etc).

Had I known it was going to be such a pain I wouldn’t have bought it. Thank you for the video.

It’s FAR easier to do this with one wheel in the air and the other on the ground. Doing it level like this is a bit ridiculous.
Also, you should only have to do this once a season at the beginning. Go super low and then maintain at .5 or so higher.

Great thanks for the video. glad I was able to see how much grease being used on a new setup :) I went ahead and packed it in!

I used to do it this way until I realized it's much easier to just loosen the screw/nuts and slide the wheel off the axel just a bit (carefully) and then move it to the particular pin height that you need. No messing with getting the e-ring on or off. Takes MUCH less time. These are great mowers - have had several (started with the Sears brand - which was either a Great States or American, branded for Sears). :)

Is there a video of the way you do it?

  • @Lee-tq4si
    @Lee-tq4si Před 4 měsíci +3

Not as easy to remove the axle is it shows in the video. You practically need a stick of dynamite to loosen the axle screws!

Same - how did you loosen it?

@@Shooter1444 Never did. I sold it. Was only a stop gap until my new power reel mower came in.

2:07 What is the change in height from C to B to A? I don't see this in the manual. For example, the Scotts 18" 7-blade says that C allows cutting heights between 2"-3". What are the heights for B and A?

+1 What the heck guys. These instructions are AWFUL

    • @wesbutler8289

From the 16" American model mower manual "Position A = 1/2" (1.27 cm) cutting height,
      position B = 1 3/4" (4.44 cm), position C = 2 1/2" (6.35
      cm)."

@@wesbutler8289 I have the 20 inch one and looked up the manual on their website and its not there. Those measurements are clearly different than mine because mine only goes as low as 1 inch. Your positioning numbers are also not correct, because its supposed to be a range, not a specific height. Remember we are talking about the MAJOR Height adjustment here not what the minor height adjustment positions mean.
Adjusting the major height positions adjusts the range of what the minor adjustment levers do (As seen in this video).
@oldmanwaugh also clearly stated in his reply that he has the 18" mower, not the 16" that you have, and again, mine is the 20". If your's is capable of going below 1 inch then clearly there is a difference in the HOC range depending on the model.

Great video! I got an 11/32 wrench but it is much too small. What size is needed for the axle nut so I don’t need to use and adjustable wrench? Thanks.

What is the tool used on 1:43 called? Is it some kind of reversible ratcheting tool? I just dont know what to search for :(

It’s a 3/8 inch drive socket wrench. It should cost under $20 and you also need a 1/2 inch socket and a 11/32 box wrench for the inside screw. Plus you’ll need needle nose pliers for the clips on both sides and a flathead screwdriver to take off the plastic caps.

Once that adjustment is done, what about the other height adjustments with the green levers?

  • @davidhine9626

So let me see if I understand this correctly: The reel mower I just purchased that has "No Tools Required", "Easy Height Adjustment" all over the packaging with a "Minimum Height of 1 inch". Requires tools and wheel removal to adjust the height to get anywhere below 2 inches?
    - There is absolutely 0 information on your website, in the digital manual on the website, in this video, in the instruction booklet, or on the mower itself to give me any sort of an idea of what height levels theses different positions allow for.

Is there a product I can purchase so that the American Reel Lawn Mower will cut it longer? I have already adjusted the trailing wheels to the highest cutting height.
