  • If you're interested in mowing the lawn with a reel lawn mower but can't afford an expensive power reel mower then all is not lost. I'll give you my first impression of the Earthwise 7 blade manual reel mower and show you a demonstration of it in action. I've got the height of cut set at one inch to mow my bermudagrass the lowest it has ever been cut. This was my first time to reel mow the lawn, so I'll give you some feedback on rotary vs. reel mowing as well.
    This is part 2 of a 3 part Earthwise reel mower review. In the first round, I explained why I chose this reel mower and showed some of the accessories I got with it. If you wanna get caught up, be sure to check it out here...

    I have used mine about 6 or 7 times so far. Here are my thoughts. I also have the Fiskars
    1. Very light weight and easy to maneuver.
    2. Very good quality cut.
    3. Haven't had any scalping yet and my lawn is less than perfect.
    4. Cut looks better every additional cut. I have found that after a double cut I fluff up the lawn with backpack blower and do a final cut for the perfect look.
    5. Blades tend to squeak very loud over time and found a little shot of WD40 to the bed knife works very well.
    6. not as easy to make adjustment as the Fiskars however it's not all that bad. Once you find your desired HOC your good to go.
    7. Great buy and highly recommend for those wanting to experience a reel cut lawn before dropping the hammer on a powered reel.
    Great review.

      @@BudgetLawns I mowed tonight Wednesday after mowing last on Sunday. I did get wash board but here is why. I cut at 7/8" in Sunday and decided tonight to take her down to 5/8". I kinda broke the 1/3rd rule by a little and although it cut fine I did get a little ripple. Truplencut fixed it right up and looks amazing. They aren't lying when they say reeling low takes commitment which I am. I realize I may not be able to keep up when warmer weather finally sets in. I will resort to Ego and Honda rotary @ 1 1/2" for the summer when impossible to keep up to 1/3 rule. I will always use the reel in spring and fall. Superior quality cut and visual appearance. For those interested in reel mowing. Get yourself one, you will get hooked. Enjoy the mow !!

    I have the exact same model and used it all last season and loved every mow. This season it wasn’t cutting paper, but I checked the manual and did a very slight adjustment to the reel to bed knife clearance. Now it cuts paper again and I didn’t even have to back lap. I love using this thing! Well worth the $$$ and I love being able to mow super early in the morning.

    Dude...I totally feel you. I just did my first reel mow last week, bought the 18" American Lawn and just did my front yard (back yard's in a real bad shape right now) shoulders were sore, my calves were burning and the my wrists took a beating. Just had my yard aerated couple days priror to mowing, and the mower kept getting hung up on the dried up plugs. The biggest thing for me, personally, the learning curve for the overlapping pass.

    I used a reel mower for a couple years when I had a very small yard. It was fun and you really don't need an expensive one to cut a standard size lawn. You might want to check the adjustment of the bed-knife to the reel if it is hard to push, it might be too tight.... adjust just until it passes the paper test.
    On a side note, I still like rotary mower better. Better at mulching unless you have time to cut every two days.

    I have a 1946 Henley Airway 5 blade reel mower i had found in a barn.i have been keeping the yard cut at 1/2 inch with it. But the gears are starting to wear out, and since there havent been parts made for it for 80 years, it was time for a backup mower. So i had been looking at this 7 blade mower for a while, and like you said, reviews are hit and miss. I watched this video and it helped my decision. I put it together and began using it. It is very light, too light actually for low cutting a slightly uneven yard. To fix the issue, i cut 8 pieces of 1/2" rebar (about 12-14" long) i found on the side of the road (FREEEEE!!!). Put them inside the rear rollers, which have 8 triangle holes inside. Wired them tightly together, and boom, i just added about 7lbs to the mower. Was cutting much better without the bounce, and not having to lean into it like you were having to do. Then i found that while cutting low, it bottoms out on the bedknife, and then the wheels dont turn and it slides right over an area and leaves it uncut. To fix that issue, i had pulled the plastic tire tread off the wheel, put 6 sheet metal screws from the inside out. Now it has some small spikes poking out from the tires and that thing now eats anything you push it through! Does a good cut and really no rifling to speak of after the cut. My 5 blades rifles quite a bit at the same cut height. All said, thanks for your videos and for all that you do bud!!

It was a simple process that didn't take much time at all. The manual was surprisingly very clear on the steps. If you do that, the three heights allowed for the lowest settings as adjusted on the rear roller are .5, .75, and 1 inch. I can't promise when I'll have that video up but I will try to do it soon. Also I am a first time home owner AND never cut grass before (don’t judge me- my dad loved it growing up therefore was never a chore on my list)

      @BudgetLawns  Před 2 lety

      Congrats on the new home. I’ve been there before. We gotta start somewhere. You could use this mower on KBG as it can be mowed low. But mowing tall with this wouldn’t be ideal in my opinion. If you’re mowing taller, a standard rotary mower would be what I’d go with. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching. Good luck.

    Is that hybrid or common Bermuda? What happened with all of the spots in the front lawn?

    • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  Před 4 lety +1

      I've got some common and hybrid. Had to have parts of my lawn redone by the builder because of poor grading. Then they rolled a different variety of bermuda sod. Ugh.
      The spots are spring dead spot...it's unique to bermuda. I did a video all about it about a month or so ago. Here's a link if you wanna check it out. They'll be gone soon once the weather warms up.

    I have a few questions about you using the Earthwise manual reel. Did you ever use it to scalp first then cut at the lower heights? Or did you just jump in at the height you wanted? I got one for next season and was planning on using it to scalp at like .5” and cut at 1” or even .75” What do you think about using it to scalp? Too crazy?? 😂 Thanks for your help as always!

      No not really. Just as fast as you can get it but still smooth and not bouncing at the same time. I appreciate your feedback. Most of the vids have been more talking up to now because there just hasn't been much going on in the lawn for me. It has been cool and wet most of the spring here in Arkansas, so the bermuda is just slow to come all the way out of dormancy and grow much. Our season doesn't really get to cranking until June. All the cool season turf guys have a lot more going on right now. But I will definitely be giving you more action stuff very soon. Thank you for keeping me on my toes. I appreciate ya watching!

    REEL MOW, ROTARY MOW.....Just get out there and mow. PITTL:

  • @davidtseng5565
    @davidtseng5565 Před 2 lety

    The biggest pitfall of reel mower design is the scissor cutting action. Since there is space between two neighbor blades, there will be grasses un-cut behind the track. The design defects are: 1. the bevel angle of reel blades is nearly 90 degrees. The blade should incline forward to reduce the bevel angle; 2. the blades are made of soft steel. The blades should be hardened to RC60; 3. the fixed bed knife should be located at the lowest point of the reel cylinder (not at the back).

    I have used and repaired and worked on and built lawn mowers on my life and these things are worth their weight in gold they're even lighter than the predecessor the cast iron one. These things hardly even need that much inertia to cut and my blade is barely touching the bar and it cuts perfect no. There's not that much effort to make this thing cut perfect

      Very true. Definitely for the 5 blades and fewer. Some friends of mine switched from the 5 blade to this 7 blade and said it eliminated the washboarding. • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  Před 4 lety

      The price must have gone up. When I got it a month and a half ago, it was on Amazon for 107 bucks. I got it and the bag and sharpening kit for 160. This one is a very sturdy, well built unit, so I think you'd find the little extra money spent to be worth it. I'm very pleased. Can't wait to get out and mow again today.
      I did a full video of why I chose this one for bermudagrass. The big selling point for it is 7 blades, which I had to have for bermuda. I go into more detail in the vid if you wanna check it out.

      Haha. I can tell you don’t know what reel mowing is all about. If you’re reel mowing a lawn for manicured turf grass, you mow every 2-3 days. Sounds like you’re just looking for a motorless mower to cut through weeds and some grass.
