I was given one of these from a friend who was moving to an apartment.They are lighter than the old ones and they work good enough.

I just purchased the 20" version and couldn't be more pleased. I made the mistake of buying another brand (unnamed) earlier this spring, that just hasn't met my expectations. Great States, American, Scott’s, Earthwise are all the made by same company and re branded with varying designs. You can't go wrong with these brands as they are all excellent products.
my grandpa has a old manual lawn mower like this from the 1940's.. been using it on his lawn for ages..
Your argument about mulching, has a solution that works with how best to use the push reel mowers. That is you mow on a more regular basis which makes it easier to mow and the clippings are then small enough to be considered mulch. Likewise the manner in which the reel mowers cuts is healthier for the grass (scissor cutting).
A reel mower you want to use a lot to keep the grass at the same height. It isnt made for foot or hip tall grass. So the clippings are small enough to be mulching clippings.. even smaller. keep the lawn a 3 inch and go over it before its 4 inch. Only thing about grass clippings is they will need to be bagged sometimes to prevent thatch buildup. The other thing is the lawn needs to be fertilized a lot because the breakdown of mulch into thats used a lot of nitrogen.Even more so with a rotary mower and taller grass.
How did you manage get squeeze the handle onto the base? I have a 16 inch that I put together on my own, but they don’t make the grass catcher for it. I bought the 18 inch with grass catcher and blade kit off Amazon for only $10 more than the 16 at Lowe’s, but absolutely cannot get the handle on it. I love using my 16 btw! I plan on returning it as soon as I get this one together.

You can always make compost in plastic trash cans and return to the yard or put in a flower bed. You can mix in things such as potting soil and other addi-ins to not need
to buy fertilizer.
Do you know why Lowes stop carrying the 18 inch mower and now only has the 14 inch in store. Other than amazon I can't find any other retailer that sells this brand reel mower.
how did you get the handle onto the mower
The old reel mowers where 40 pounds and these new reel mowers are about 20. There is a company that still makes the old super heavy design and I just got one recently and I really like it.
Thanks for the great review. I think I might get one of these push (reel) mowers. I hate smelling like gas after mowing the lawn, and I would like to listen to music or podcasts while mowing. These personal reviews are so much more trustworthy than what you might get on a site like Amazon, where you have no idea who actually wrote the review.

I have an Earthquake 16" Mower. On the one hand, It's hard to push in tall grass. It stops if you hit a large twig from a bush or tree. It is hard to attach the handle to the base (I disconnect it each time I use it to save storage space). I put the base on one side (on the ground) and put the hole of one arm on the bottom bolt first. Then I use my body weight to push down on the other arm of the handle to get it on the other side (upper) base bolt. On the other hand, I never have to add gasoline to it. I never have to check the oil. I like it for exercise (because I do it twice a week to keep my grass from growing too high). If you don't have a lot of twigs, if you keep your lawn cut at 3 or 4 inches and if your yard is not too big, then try it. Tip: cut your grass at sunset to avoid extreme heat of midday sun. Cut it twice a week to keep it from growing too high. Cut half your yard one day and the other half the following day. - Ted Vegh

It's been awhile, but I seem to recall I had to fiddle with it for a couple minutes but did eventually get it to snap on. Keep trying as it should work and good luck!
what will be a good height to set it on to cut new germinated grass thats about 4-5 inches tall?
I could only offer my own personal opinion on this, but in spring you can probably get away with keeping it as low as a couple of inches. But once weather gets hotter and drier, raise up the cut height to avoid scorching. But if you want to be completely sure, best to consult an expert at a lawn and garden centre.
For some reason I have a hard time moving it forward to cut my grass!!! Any solutions? It seems to cut better in reverse.

Personally, no. But people I know who have one usually bring it to a business that can sharpen the blades. Perhaps a Google search for a push mower sharpening service might help. Sorry I can't be of any better insight on this one.

yes.. keep it mowed short.. make it like a dailey walk.. small clippings.. plus add nitrogen ot fertilizer as not to drain the lawn as grass clippings decompose
I did moms lawn in 1967 all the time at 7 years old. So the old mowere were not heavy and I didnt know about oiling them ore blade sharpening then, Since I have degrees in lanscape and in hort etc etc.. and learned to sharpen a tri wheel mladefor a gold course.. back killer! But I want a reel mower for our lawn as the riding mower has a blown engine and the push rotary rusted out.. I could use te exercize, and an thinking hmm.. ill just take a walk back and forth where the grass is highest every day. It wouls be the same as a walker or shopping cart I can use since my broken hip surgery but they really push you in rehab pain and all.
Do you have to put it together.
How sharp where those blades when you took it out of the box?
I seem to remember them being sharp enough that I had to be careful when putting it together.

Could you crash leaves with it?
Not sure exactly what you mean by "crash", but if you are referring to mulching I don't believe you can. You'd can certain try to cut them by going over a pile, but mulching works when a powered motor passes over top and the slot is blocked where the clippings would normally be thrown into a bag. By being trapped the blade chops the clippings smaller and smaller until it is small enough to get absorbed into the grass. As this mower is open, it wouldn't be the same.

Yup, I'm mowing down the competition with reviews like these...
Is this an 18 inch cut or 18 inch from wheel to wheel? And does it have a sharpening kit included? As far as mulching goes you will need a first rotary cut then use the reel a lot so you have short clippings which are good, but you will need to fertilize because the nitrogen from the clippings use up nitrogen while decaying. When mowing you want to go in a different direction each time you mow.. Yes a clean cut from a reel is better than a rotary that tears the grass tips. But it will need to be kept sharp.
Send me one to review... this would be easier to use with a broken hip and lighter. Even a riding mower with bumps and vibrations would hurt. The handles would work like a walker, and as far a the wheels go you will still need a weedeater to mow close to fences and walls and landscape borders just like any mower
I am recovering from a broken back and I am able to use the push mower like a walker! And I only weigh 90 pounds so that tells you how easy it is to use.
It won't cut cleanly, always leaves un-cut grasses behind the track, typical of this type of lawn mowers. The pitfall is the scissor cutting action. The non-contact type works a little better.

Send me a free one I will try this florida cow pasture type bahia grass and sand and review it.. I am a FL master gardener with 2 degrees with honers.. Landscapr and environmental Horticulture anda diploma in wildlife and forestry and was a gldcourse super/greens keeper and etc and plenty of wallpaper. I just want to mow the lawn and do not need gas and oil and noise.. taking a walk..
