Balance is so important to taking your figure drawings to a high standard, but explanations about how to tackle it are often confusing. 'Find the centre of gravity' is not as easy as it sounds. I hope this video will help you master this often overlooked skill!
What is really cool is that as you are better and finding the line of gravity, your gesture drawing will improve, because you will be better able to push things to each side of that line, creating interesting angles and relationships between the forms.
If you enjoyed the video, you'll love the free resources linked to above. Also, leave a comment and let me know your thoughts!

“It would be really awful to do all the maths.” 😂
What about the chopping the person up part?
I guess that’s where British humor comes in.

Kenzo, this was EXCELLENT! Very illustrative of the importance of how balance or the lack there of, is vital to a compelling figure drawing. Really good stuff. Cheers

This explained everything perfectly. I just couldn't seem to find a source that really told me what the center of balance was or how to make a balanced figure. I drew a gesture today and realised it was extremely unbalanced and that's what pushed me to finally learn something about the topic. I know I''ll have to rewatch this video from time totime though

Really good explanation as usual. I can see how understanding balance would be essential when drawing from imagination. But even when drawing from life or a reference photo, knowing this could act as a check on the natural tendency to straighten the figure.

I just want to say that I've stumbled onto your videos some weeks ago and I am finding them incredibly useful. I really love your explanations, they are very clear and fun and easy to follow. Even though I have been drawing very intensely for years I still felt my basics were lacking, and I was a bit disoriented about how to improve things like gesture and construction of the body, and I was feeling overwhelmed with all the existing information. Following your advice so far has been very clarifying. I think I'm going to do the Fresh Eyes challenge and see how it goes. Thank yoi so much for all your work, I reallt, really appreciate it!

Great and useful video as always, many thanks from all artists of the world. Recently I watched some Machael Matessi's videos about Center of Gravity, he says that for men and women it s different. For men - usually, it s somewhere in the chest, whereas for most women - in the pelvis area. That's why some poses can be achieved only by men, and some only by women. Love ur Reference library!

I've tried several beginner courses now but for me yours made the most sense as you explain basically everything and why you do it- Now I just have to find a video where we get instructions for seeing tilts and twists, as I struggle with that a lot. Not even getting it on paper, just seeing what is going on is ridiculously hard. So far I almost always draw the wrong rotation first and can't say where the eye level even is.Oh well, time to practice more

When painting a figure, the center of gravity is very important. First of all, the person must appear to be standing, and then, the center of gravity can be used to create a sense of movement.

I funny I did a drawing and tried to do a vertical line for the weight but I didn't seen this video yet hehehe.
Well it useful perso I was useing the 50% 50% technique and just averaging the weight of body parth tho to be fair useing my technique I kinda got the skiny boy at 2:00 wrong... I underestimated the weight of the head it felt more on the right to me because of how much mass was on that side But may be I also forgot to take into account the distance of the weight... That hand an leg does look much farder than the weight on the right... probably have a big impact on carrying the gravity to the left.

Yeah ok watev but, if you cannot learn to love math and understand the basics of phi, grace and fine the tuning of the universe, you will never be able to capture beauty, I like to work within the archetype of a grid similar to that of the 2d representation of the DNA double helix,, Its amazing what can unfold from basic math. Practice making nice arch's, balance lies in the math of the arc, you can see it if you look for it.
