We are removing an entire dimension to start this 10 day challenge. By thinking 2D, we can more easily get to the heart of some of the biggest ideas the human figure presents us. If we can learn to see each of these poses in terms of the very simple 2D model we created, we can see some of the most important things we need to see for life drawing, including both gesture and structural drawing.
These ideas about the torso, shoulders, attachment of the legs, head and neck are fundamental to figure drawing, whether you are interested in gesture, anatomy or using simple 3D forms.
If you are unsure about how to see these simple shapes in these poses, there is extra guidance when you sign up to the challenge with the link above.
Chapters:
0:00 Intro
0:21 Torso
3:44 About the Fresh Eyes challenge
4:44 Shoulders
7:18 Attaching legs
8:55 Neck and head
11.07 The model as a whole
12:59 The limitation of this model
13:24 The side view, going 3D and more
How the Fresh Eyes challenge works:
There will be two tutorials here on CZcams - this one and another on day 6 (Sunday 20th Feb).
When you make an account with the link above, you can access the 2D model and play around with it, trying to match the poses. Each day, you’ll get a new exercise plus 5 specially designed reference photos each day to practise with and drawing. There will be additional mini-tutorials in there to explain how to see the forms in the figure, as well as the side view of the figure, plus optional live sessions for further clarification.
Then on day 6 we will switch to thinking in 3D. We will build on the ideas already developed but using simple 3D forms. On day 6, a tutorial will be posted here on CZcams about drawing these ideas in 3D. Again on our website, there will be exercises each day on days 6-10, plus live sessions and extra explanations.
Sign up with the link above and learn to see the figure with Fresh Eyes!

This video has some of the most useful ideas we have discussed on this channel. It took a ton of thought to make this model as simple as it is. But simple doesn't mean easy. The ideas are fairly sophisticated, and it's not always easy to see them in a pose. Come and practise them plus much more by joining in the full challenge - link is in the description! When you sign up for a free account, you can also access our reference library for your general life drawing practice, plus our lovely community :)
UGLY MODELS
Que bueno! Los osteópatas no unen, tu nos divides. Sumamente interesante. Dime por favor que pincel y que tinta usas para mantener los pelos del pincel sano?
5:08 is nobody gonna talk aobut how absolutely dank this looks
Kenzo this is an unbelievable offering and to think you are doing it for no charge is amazing. Thank you so much for the time, attention, and value you are providing to the community. Bravo!
Thanks Timothy appreciate your support!
I just finished the Fresh Eyes Challenge. I feel so much more confident in drawing figures. It's great practice, it's free, and you can get feedback from others. I feel like I went from beginner to intermediate over the two weeks it took me. Big thanks to Kenzo!
Ah that’s so great to hear. If you ever want to email me any of your before and after drawings, would love to see :)
The "Attaching the Legs" section proves this is a good video and teacher. Due to pride or just not knowing, too many art "teachers" refuse to give a anatomical point for the top of the thigh. At the ASIS when all anatomy is accounted for.
The dog is so patient being poked in several different ways mutiple times 🤣 🐶 Very helpful video btw!
Thank you, hard not to drown in the CZcams "change only one thing to become a pro artist" - tutorial swamp. You really bring clarity and a good place to start and grow from!
Excellent explanation. I love your sense of humour! I am hoping that my internet will function well enough in my small fishing village in Mexico to be able to join the live sessions as well as complete this challenge. Thank you so much Kenzo (and I also imagine help from your family :D ) for doing this !!!!!
Thanks Jack! If your internet doesn't hold up, don't worry there will be recordings. Yes my family really supports me so much. Even my 3 year old daughter understands (most of the time) I can't play as much as I normally do at the moment
"...I use it as a pencil case because I find that a lot more useful" hahahahahah I hit the subscribe button at the very same moment, that is the humor that made the world better!
My dog loves that wooden-man/ mannikin! i gave it to him since I wasn’t learning much from it.
hehe it is a great chew toy for sure
Kenzo, Congratulations for these most useful mini tutorials. The way you simplified the major formes/shapes of the body, helps us tremendously to understand the human anatomy and to draw quick gestures in minutes in every possible pose.
This is kind of magical. It makes so much sense and makes the figure so comprehensible to my eye. I'm kind of dazzled.
Love to hear that Ariana!
I only found this channel like a few days ago and I'm glad I did. I cant thank u enough for these free lessons
Wow the squashing midsection tip has connected so many dots in my head as to why I'm constantly redrawing the torso area and why my proportions are usually off. This is the useful stuff I never seem to find in the anatomy books. It's rare that I see my art improve so soon after watching a video but this did just that, thanks!
You break down these concepts into digestible chunks of information. This channel is helping to make the often frustrating task of life drawing more doable. Thank you!
Just did a study like this now. This is godsent
Thanks Emmanuel. I think this might be one of my most useful videos :)
Fantastic Kenzo. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Kenzo!
This is great! I love the use of simple shapes to break down the complexity of the human figure.
Invaluable information. Thank you so much.
Much gratitude for this tutorial and the 10 day challenge. This tutorial breaks things down to very simple forms. The basic shapes that squish or stretch, pivot... ahhh, i can see it better already.
Thanks for all the help!
Outstanding perspective clearly explained. Thank you!
Thank you for all you do! Looking foward to the next 10 days. Great explainations today as always.
thank you for the video Kenzo! and thank you for coming up with this fun challenges! I havent had much time for life drawing, but these challenges inspire me to make time for it
Excited to start this journey!
Thanks. I registered for the 10day challenge.
Saved! Thank you! :)
Wow, that was so clearly explained. I signed up last night after watching one CZcams. After playing with the ideas, I noticed today that in my doodling, the results were simultaneously more artistic, expressive and realistic. The doodling part was also more fun...that says a lot because I always have fun doodling, which is why I do it. I can feel my doodling turning into drawings. I love how expressive you are in your videos and how much fun you are having as well.
brilliant! Thank you so much for all your time and effort explaining these fundamentals in such an accessible way.
I love Maggie’s long-suffering expressions! Looking forward to the next ten days!
I know poor Maggie. She wants a cuddle and to go to the park, not to be the star of an art channel
@@lovelifedrawing That’s what she gets for being such a natural talent. I’m sure there’s lots of cuddles and play ahead for her.
Such excellent lesson with great explanations and descriptions of the body parts and structures, Kenzo. I’m so glad to see that you’re hosting and leading this challenge, and that it’s free! Thank you for all that you do for the figure drawing community!
Hey Barbara! So great to see you here - hope you’ve been well!
@@lovelifedrawing I’m totally loving figure drawing and drawing figures every day, thanks to you and Mayko! Congratulations on the birth of your son!
Thank you so much. Knowing where to put the collarbones in relation to the ribcage shape has eluded me in my years of life drawing. This is so helpful and I'm excited to tackle more complex dynamic poses with the arms above the head! Thank you!
Thank you for this exceptional way to start understanding the figure!
Es de los mejores canales de dibujo que he visto, he corregido muchas cosas en mi aprendizaje de dibujo gracias a este hombre.
That’s great!
I loved this lesson, and I can’t wait to do the challenge!!! Yay!
I just joined the community and the Fresh Eye Challenge! I’m excited 😊
Great Tutorial, thank you so much
Thank you for all your. And thank you for the challenge. Really motivating to see passion.
I'm so glad I found your channel omg thank you so much
Thank you very much! That is very useful knowledge and the challenge specifically!
Your channel is so helpful. Bless you.
Owww man this is gold, every beginner and not too beginner uses a cube or any thing to represent the torso, but that its bad to draw shoulders and arms correctly making some mistakes, this helped me so much
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Haven’t seen these shapes anywhere else and they are immensely useful. Thanks a bunch!
this idea goes so well with what i've come to learn recently. i watched a simple video that showed how a painter sees images which is simply through shapes. the idea is so simple but it made so much sense to me as someone who can only make sense of images through lines which has it's limits since what we see is in three dimensions! i'm really excited for this challenge to helpd me solidify this thinking into my practice and continue my journey :)
Kenzo, you are amazing!
Thank you for this! I appreciate the explanations. I’m getting started now!
Clear and easy to understand, thx for these explainations ^^
Thank you for this video! It's a little bit late, but I'm excited to start this challenge.
Coming one month too late to follow this course live, but I have registered and am going to follow it step by step. Awsome resource you have put together in that site and in this video. Thanks a LOT!
This is such a great video to get started with figure drawing! I love how siimple you make the shapes! I've been a professional landscape painter for 40+ years, and am thrilled to get started making better figure drawings! Thank you for this course!❤
I just practised using these shapes and ideas and i felt like Ive just been enhanced so much. This video was honestly so helpful. ❤
Love Life Drawing, thanks!!! I never looked at the clavicle arm intersection, before. I focused too much on the shoulder blades. Very clever, thank you!
THANK YOU!! Soo helpful and I'm so excited to do the challenge!! Wow, thank you!!
Thank you very much!
Interesting approach! Pretty straightforward :) Thanks!
I just started the Fresh Eyes Challenge and finished this video. I took notes along the way. Onto Exercise 1!
Keen on giving this challenge a go. Love your work Kenzo!
just as good second time round - thank you for this
Thanks for the great and fun explanation. I'm very excited for this challenge
Lovely breakdown of this slightly more advanced technique, can't wait to try it out! :)
you are the greatest, your work on figure drawing is helping me more than drawing curves, asymmetric curves help but this is the gold gold gold
Took a few years of life drawing in college. I wish I had seen this first! Simplifying the shapes, some of which are fixed, some of which are malleable, and relating that to anatomy was a real eye opener for me.
Looking forward to more!
Yeah it was for me too! The figure is a series of rigid bony structures with muscle and fat squashing and stretching between them
thank you for this wholesome tutorial
This is so excellent in the way the parts are broken down into these simplified shapes. This will help so much with those 15, 30, and 1 - and 2 minute gesture drawings. Thank you,
MSG Leum
Very helpful and expressive method of explaining the figure and movement thank you.Hope to follow.
I bought two of those mannequins, male and female. They're on Ebay now! -:)
Excited to start this challenge today! :D
Just starting out, and so glad I found these videos!
yooo I may be 2 weeks late but these are sooo good. the quality of the video and the way you explain it is so priceless!
Great class/challenge. Thank you!
This is fun!!😀 I'll try it right away☆
Love this! Thanks a million for this ;)))
Thanks a lot for your videos and for this 10 days challenge, I'm on!
I'm learning by myself and it's hard because, apart from learning how to draw, you need to find good sources. And this channel is resulting really useful, seriously!
Thanks for all the fantasic materials you create and publish, by far more useful than the info I have gotten from my in person group life classes.
24-Dec. Christmas eve, was a lucky day for me. Never heard about this series and I stumbled upon it.
After going through some videos randomly, joined the Fresh Eyes series. Watched the first video for TWO minutes and started seeing the "angle -squash-thing" in a newspaper photo!
YOU ARE A GENIUS. And a SAINT to be doing this for the community 🙏🏽
I live in India, but now believe in Santa!
Mmmmm Might try it out if I ever get the time to do so... Seem interesting way of doing it form what I understand it bassicly matching the block given to the ref... sond kinda fun like... some type of Puzzle game or something ....
Thanks for simplifying things
Thank you, Built up the courage to finally start learning and practicing again. These courses are incredibly helpful. Love your way of teaching, It really makes you grab the concept. I feel like other tutorials skip up on a great deal of basic knowledge and hence it becomes incredibly frustrating to follow along. Hoping to stick with the habit this time and draw daily.
very interesting and helpful , thank you :)
Excited to try these exercises
Super ! Thanks!
Been looking around for a good book or program for learning how to draw figures. This program shines so much brighter than any book or online program I've come across. Bravo! I'm excited to try!
Always great contents, Kenzo! Thank you. I found so interesting the way you simplified the figure and explained the movements (specially the colar bone one). Joining the challenge now :)
Thanks a ton! Im definitely in for the 10 days challenge!
Thank you!
Thanks a lot mate! Can't thank ya enough!
Woh! ❤ this is definitely a great method for learning how to draw. Thanks 🙏🏻 for the video.
I haven't drawn in years but this video made me want to try out forms again! I know I'm a month behind these sessions but I'll go through these!
It's crazy how this can be free ! thank you
I feel extreeemly lucky to find you! 😊 Thank you so much for sharing all this knowledge! ❤️
wow a really helpful, well presented video. great to see this and explain bit more about structure.
This tutorial is truly fantastic! I am really glad I happened to find your channel, the knowledge is really helpful and presented in such an easy to understand way! Thank you!💖
Nice explanation to how find and understand the figure parts.thanks to you
I'm beyond excited for this challenge. Figuary this year has still been fun so far, but without Kenzo's instruction, it's felt like something was missing compared to previous years. Can't wait to crack on with it!
Hey Kat! So nice to see you here :)
I've missed your videos a lot! I'm still doing Figuary as usual, and I don't know if I can fit both things each day but if not... I'll do the Fresh Eyes challenge in March. Thank you so much for this opportunity!
Great tutorials, simple affective and well explained.
Starting this challenge today :D Thanks for making it free!!!!!!!!
I am so excited to start this!!!! I feel that this is going to be super helpful for me right now, I have some really bad art block going on
This is excellent. I've been surfing around for tutorials and I favor yours, it is thorough yet simple. I also appreciate the atmosphere of support your videos foster. - Dano's GF
