Gesture is so much fun and is such a huge part of figure drawing. But it’s also quite confusing and mysterious at first. In this series, we are demystifying gesture!
In this second part, we go from the straight line angles we used in part 1 to curves that flow through the pose. However, we get very clear and specific about these 'flows' so that you know exactly how to tackle them.
I will explain the points on the figure to look for and then how to find the gestural curves you need. Gesture drawing needn't be mysterious and complex! Very proud of this one, hope you enjoy it :)

this series is such a godsend. i've been drawing on and off for the past 15 years and i never understood how to actually mentally approach gestures and this has taught me more than anyone's advice irl.

this is great! thanks for clarifying all this. I feel as though for most people it’s easier to have more concrete instructions before trying to do things more intuitively by “feeing the flow” and whatnot

Thank you for the encouragement you always give so generously compared to other teachers. A great teacher is someone who has struggled themselves to get to where they are. I think some teachers had so much talent to begin with (either born with it or started drawing at age 2) that they don't know what it is like psychologically to walk into a life drawing class and feel overwhelmed by everyone in the room. You may understand the concept, but the hand just doesn't do what the brain wants for awhile. That is the frustrating part. I have always been a really good student, but this is a different kind of learning. Thank god I am older so I am more comfortable being in the uncomfortable zone. I have no one to impress in my age zone. In fact, I am lucky to be still standing.

Best figure drawing instructor on CZcams. Not even close. Clear and concise videos that break down nuanced topics into manageable challenges. Keep up the great work! ^_^

@@madmaster3d I think this series is better than Proko's only because Proko tells you what to do, but not why. This video series breaks down the purpose of gestures in more detail. Proko's video is still very well made though and I definitely recommend everyone to watch it as well.

I watched to about 9mins and thought "That's too complex and not concrete enough information to understand in 12 mins." Then he explained the part about how it's like riding a bike. Pedals, breaks, steering, watching the road. - As always great symbology to reference the learning process!

Bit random, but I love the censor-kini you painted put on. The random dots and bars people put always felt off for some reason.

Amazing video. This series definitely clarifies what "gesture drawing" really is since it's a very BROAD subject with different takes and meanings.
I would also recommend anyone reading this to read "Figure Drawing: Design and Invention" by Michael Hampton which also goes in depth about gesture drawings. My favorite art textbook!
