In this video you'll learn an effective way to learn anatomy for figure drawing. This is coming from someone that really struggled with anatomy and didn't enjoy studying it at all. Once I figured out the approach outlined in this video, the whole thing came to life for me.
If you've tried to learn anatomy so you can draw people better and found it frustrating or unproductive, these tips will hopefully really help you out.
Other resources that I mentioned:
Valerie Winslow's Classic Human Anatomy
Anatomy for Sculptors
Morpho Fat and Skin Folds
I also showed a physical model from 3D total
In order to ensure I can recommend things without bias, I don't currently get paid in any way to promote anyone's products. Most things I use I bought myself, but sometimes I get things sent to me for free. Either way I'm free to say whatever I want about them.

the fresh eyes challenge was awesome!!!! it was a great starting point and i still look for the landmarks that i learnt in that course!
Awesome! Thank you Chris!
Kenzo I love your videos. I struggle so much with negativity and of course we’re all our own worst enemy. But your positivity, kindness, and your amazing teaching skills have helped me through a lot of those mental hurdles. I still have so much to learn, but I know I’ll get there easier with your videos. Your channel is 10/10 for quality and usefulness. The draw along videos where you draw with your mother are so helpful to me as well. Thank you!
For book suggestions, I also love the Morpho books by Michel Lauricella. They're compact, easy to carry around in a pocket or backpack, and good for reference.
I plan to get more!
Also easy to pirate
I appreciated the donut reference at the start. And this month's exercises in the Study Group on anatomy are so useful! I've never paid much attention to anatomy before in drawing and the way you're explaining it has been so helpful.
oh thanks Mark! Yes just as you taught me, i added donuts right at the start because anatomy is scary
Not the first time I've heard to draw the bones and the form will follow. It was good to see you demonstrate it because now it makes a little more sense lol.
Very good, thanks for your time..
I have done the challenge and I like you to know that I have grown so much in drawing figures. Thank you Kenzo.
It's the first time I comment on your videos and at first I underestimated your content but you keep proving me how great and passionate of a teacher you are, and how it's okay to not know everything at once
This is a good video, I sometimes struggle to think about gesture and design or such bcs I get focused on anatomy, muscle, bones, shapes so it's nice to get told what I'm doing wrong :p
this is also a reminder to keep drawing poses and try to merge up everything I practice into the drawings I do. So maybe I thought to train while doing gestures/shape design, then add the bones/proportions, then the muscles.
Very helpful and informative. You give applicable advice I can use today to improve the process. And you are objectively cheering. ☀☀☀
One of the things I struggle the most is studying while also doing art I want, especially with limited time
Seems like I feel as if I'm missing out on doing art while studying anatomy, but then I also feel like I'm missing out on valuable learning time when doing art.
Straight into the point. Love it!
Very helpful, thanks!
always a pleasure to see your videos...
For everyone: Do the fresh eyes challenge!
Hey thanks Juan!
I would like to see a colaboration with Proko
The “Challenge “ is fabulous! It meets you where you are and pushes you beyond. It’s fun too! 🤗💕
thank you Susy!
Great! I've got the books. They're very good!
Thank you
I wish I have the time to study this. It seems like fun learning.
The 10 day fresh eyes challenge was REALLY great for someone new to life drawing. It helped me so much, Thankyou. A great and free resource!
Wonderful thanks Jude!
@@lovelifedrawing I’ve joined the study group now 😊 thanks again

YES SAM WEBSTER! He's amazing he also has great vlogs funny humor to.
ill definitely be building the 3d model, thats so cool
Great video!
fantastic !
I honestly love your content, as someone who trains JKD, body bulding, and art. I love your references, the way you explain things, how to do things, your advice, and for being you.
Looking forward for more!
Awesome! Thank you!
Great variety of resources I haven't thought about yet. I've found that muscle shapes vary so wildly from person to person, it's sometimes hard to even identify them correctly, when you just have one or two books as a reference point. Have to check out those youtube channels. Thanks, Kenzo!
yeah they vary a lot and also the ways fat forms and is stored varies a ton too, maybe even more than muscle shapes. it's worth getting attuned to the seeing the skeletal framework and then getting to know the origin and insertions of muscles, because then you sort of know 'well that muscle has to be there'
It's hard for me to find new information about learning anatomy, but there were some amazing takeaways that I've never heard of or forgot about. The importance of fat, identifying muscle groups, and learning just enough anatomy to add onto other fundamentals, rather than thinking of it as its own category were my top three takeaways. Thank you so much for making this
that's great to hear!
For book suggestions, I would recommend Roberto Osti books: Basic Human Anatomy and Dynamic Human Anatomy.
Thank u kenzo for these videos ur videos are so motivation to look at. Wishing u all the success. :)
Thank you! You too!
Another huge tip I gotta tell you all. Use yourself as a reference and if you start working our you can easily learn the muscles from yourself + health boost as well
Fresh eye challenge such a life saver for me. Thank you soooo much!!
For figure drawing what kind of paper do you use?
Struttura Uomo - (volume no.1) is the best anatomy book I’ve used, in my opinion, even if you don’t know Italian. Highly recommend it!
Should definitely get it if you don’t have it already. ♥️
Edit: there are many books from that series, I only have volume 1, should probably check out the rest as well, good luck everyone!
Thanks for sharing!
@@lovelifedrawing oh shucks, Nup, thank you for sharing with everyone!
I have a pdf copy, if anyone is interested.
This is very helpful. Thanks. I am a Physiotherapist and have always observed human musculo skeletal anatomy clinically. It is very different to observe those same features artistically/creatively - I am retraining my eye and paradigm. This video helps. I am teaching myself Life drawing online at home.
Glad it was helpful Ben! Yes it's different for sure but your existing knowledge will give you a huge head shart with it, so that is great.
Yoga anatomy books are also awesome to learn anatomy!
Loved fresh eye challenge.
thank you Sue!
Fresh eyes is great, check it out. I saw a significant improvement in my own work over the course. Thanks Kenzo
thanks so much Abi i'm so glad it helped :)
Hey Kenzo... Great Video. Fresh Eyes Challenge Was awesome I can vouch for that. Really helped to simplify basic figure drawing for me. 🤗 Gracias Once again.
Thank you Tessa!
A year ago I study the pelvis in every angel i think I drew about a few hundred now I can draw them very easily but it took me weeks 😂 I greatfull that I did but it’s kinda useless now I could have spend that time practicing smth else 😭
do anybody know if George Bridgman constructive anatomy book is good for comic artist or good at all. been studying Jim lee and he used this book as well.
it is good. i would say get into it once you're confident with simplifying the forms of the figure in easier ways and also with your anatomy. Because bridgman is quite a sophisticated simplification of the figure based on anatomical knowhow, so it'll make sense at a later stage in the learning process
what do you think about mike matessi"s force drawing books when it comes to figure drawing?
i still haven't yet gone through those. I want to at some point though. there's a lot of resources out there now, which is great for us :)
This is kinda funny, but my father actually did learn English by reading the dictionary and learning a couple of words each other. 😂
You look like Mike Shinoda
@2:33 That's me. XD
ridiculous behaviour!
I have COMPLETELY, TOTALLY and UTTERLY ignored fat.
The Fresh Eyes challenge was fun at first, but the only comments I got were someone constantly telling me everything I was doing wrong (which I'd already identified and fixed in the next set) while never telling me anything I did well. She complimented everyone else, but kept needling me until I stopped. It's unfortunate because I really enjoyed the community and resources as a whole.
Tbh not knowing how to learn something properly and investing time on it feels like a waste of time, no, honestly it kinda really is. And having videos that explains the how's and the why's even if you see a lot of videos doing it in different approach can give you an idea to be able to teach yourself. this comment is kinda off topic, but I just want to share this experience of mine so you don't end up wasting 2-3 years worth of time......
