awwww yeah thats true and for him too. I wish he could have made more movies and TV shows through out the 2000's but I could understand due to the stress of the business and his own health concerns. He was able to peacefully walk away from it all though :)
This is an epic performance that rightly cemented Ethel Merman's place in showbiz history. Out of context it's a great clip, but when you see it as part of the entire film it's a goose-pimpling, tear-inducing climax to the story. Mitzi Gaynor's performance in the final 15 seconds in the clip is outstanding. She's not the main focus at that point, but she's acting her heart out. I always appreciate performers who are staying in the moment even when they know the audience is most likely not watching them.
Indeed. Also Ethel’s full body reaction at 2:21 showing her torn between wanting to finish the song or hug her son who’s been missing, damn near presumed dead, is worthy of an Oscar alone. Two incredibly talented actresses.
I wanted to be her in grade one at five because I could read at three. Nemlander told me to "just move my lips." Perhaps I was drowing out the other children and she was worried that they might be jealous of my beauty? In my memories, at least. Mrs. Kates in s subsequent Crestwood elementary was a genius, and another was an accepting "mother figure." :) Fine teachers, both.
I just loved this scene so much. Merman belting out that song and O' Connor standing there almost in admiration for her as a performer but keeping in character just sends shivers through me every time 😢

I saw this movie a lot on the old Saturday Afternoon Theater in my town on TV as a 70s kid. When I grew up, I learned who Johnnie Ray was, and now every time I see this scene, I think, "poor ol' Johnnie Ray"; he's the blond man in the Army dress uniform-and the subject of the first line in the 80s hit song "Come On, Eileen". This movie was the peak of his career.
No words, the best ever dear madam! Call her Madam from PARIS FRANCE. Merci beaucoup for this incredible outstanding rendering historical Hollywood Merman O'Connor Monroe rendez-vous, there's nothing like them in june 2020. Emmanuel
For Ethyl Merman NOT to have arrived on the 40s, & 50s Golden Age of Screen Musical Would Have Been Tragic. She's our American, toe tappin' version of Brunhilde with heart & style. Lawd, she had the power.
THE GREATEST EVER ON HER OWN! BRAVO EVER, MERCI BEAUCOUP FOR THIS INCREDIBLE RENDITION IN WIDE SCREEN TECHNICOLOR RENDERING. A MUST TO SEE FOR CINEMASCOPE HISTORY NO WAY. Emmanuel from PARIS FRANCE
Up close and personal on the screen, all her flaws were magnified. This is why she didn't get Gypsy - and didn't get anything really. Call Me Madam was proof. She was a really, really bad actress with no sense of timing speaking dialogue. When she became a star on the stage there were no microphones, and she was big not just because she was really loud, she had great diction. On the screen she was embarrassingly out of touch.
There's really nothing pretentious about a mid-Atlantic accent but maybe that's the reputation thanks to William Buckley and some others. @@akrenwinkle
@@fattymcfatso1083 If William Buckley really spoke that way- and I think he did- it wasn't pretentious. If the film actors who were given elocution lessons talked that way while acting, it wasn't pretentious.

Yeah...Mitzi Gaynor is somefin else. She's so beautiful I can't look at her for very long.
@@MissMiffed I completely agree
@@MissMiffed Oh for pete's sake. It's pure ham at it's finest. The song itself though is as 'Cowboy' says, "goose-pimpling" indeed.

I never noticed it before, but the bustline of her dress was very risqué for 1954.
Oh? There's no cleavage. Isn't that the test?
Yeah because merMAN is MAN IN DRAG or a CASTRATO
To date every “female” singer is a CASTRATO
ALL models are CASTRATOs..Victoria,s SECRET 😂
Do you think any man would let this song be sung without it
No kidding
That was my first thought!

There's no singer like Ethel Merman! A force of nature.
I remember her from the Rudolph & Frosty crossover.
I agree there is only one person who can sing this song and that’s Miss Ethel Merman
This song is a metaphor for life, and Ethel Merman is my inspiration to go on with the show.
Ethel owns this song.....what a gem!
No one could sing it like her...
There's no business like show business
Like no business I know
Everything about it is appealing
Everything the traffic will allow
Nowhere could you get that happy feeling
When you are stealing
That extra bow
There's no people like show people
They smile when they are low
Yesterday they told you you would not go far
That night you open and there you are
Next day on your dressing room they've hung a star
Let's go on with the show
The costumes, the scenery, the make-up, the props
The audience that lifts you when you're down
The headaches, the heartaches, the backaches, the flops
The sheriff who escorts you out of town
The op'ning when your heart beats like a drum
The closing when the customers won't come
There's no business like show business
Like no business I know
You get word before the show has started
That your favorite uncle died at dawn
Top of that, your ma and pa have parted
You're broken-hearted
But you go on
There's no people like show people
They smile when they are low
Even with a turkey that you know will fold
You may be stranded out in the cold
Still you wouldn't 'change for a sack of gold
Let's go on with the show
