Loosely based on the memoirs of world-renowned striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, Gypsy follows the journey of the irrepressible Rose (Imelda Staunton, Vera Drake), the mother to end all stage mothers, as she balances the challenges of parenthood with the joys and heartbreaks of a life in the world of show business.

wow Umbridge really changed after the war
Lol
😂
@1:10 she used a curse to make him bow

She also kind of looks like Mrs Weasley 😂
Here’s the thing, people talk about how she was over the top... she was NOT. She was playing to every person in the Savoy theater. That stage is gigantic, that house is A BEAST... she’s a pint sized woman. She was flawless. One of the best performances I have ever seen on the stage.
Rose IS over the top.
You're supposed to be over the top on these types of roles
That is exactly what I was going to say. Rose doesn't know how to be anything else but over the top!
I always that people who say those things don't actually do, or watch, live theatre. Acting on film is very different from acting on stage, especially one that size.
you can not see a subtle eyebrow raise from the back row of "theatre". Cineplex, yes, "theatrrre" nooo.
Literally the only thing I knew this woman from was Harry Potter and I am just now discovering all of these stage credits. Imelda is AWESOME.
Me too, she was so evil in Harry Potter that made me have reservations about this musical, was a bit afraid to see her! Ha ha, she definitely made a strong impression in my childhood. Plus the name Gypsy put me off, as I thought it was about gypsies. Wish there was more advertising and promotion and I would have gone to see the show. I only discovered it unfortunately yesterday and missed the show in London in 2015. I hope it will come back again soon, even near London, I'd take a train to see it .
If you do nothing else, see her in the 2004 film Vera Drake. She won almost every award for it, except the Oscar, and she blew Hillary Swank away in Million Dollar Baby. Highway Robbery!!!
Thanks James. I did see Vera Drake. She was brilliant, even though I didn't like the film that much though. Found it a bit boring. I don't know why.
same, she's extraordinary
Same😂
Imelda Stauton nails every moment of this song. Her "Rose" understands that she's making up this story on the spot for Louise because it's what keeps them alive and fed. The sheer desperation and humanity that Imelda brings to this song is earth shattering.
So true--This is a desperate woman talking her mousy young daughter into becoming a stripper so they both can eat. This is a great performance of that.
Angela Lansbury is my favorite rose next to Imelda they both bring this somewhat warmth to rose while also bringing her bitterness and desperation
People who are commenting that she's "overacting" have looked past the fact that this is a performance intended for at least a thousand-seater theater. She NEEDS to reach every corner of the house with her acting and singing. Remember that in film, everything can be magnified, so film actors can afford to be "subtle" if they want. Just to give an example, Anne Hathaway's I Dreamed the Dream worked very well in film because the camera is literally inches away from her face, but do you think it'll have the same effects if the same performance was done on stage? Definitely not.
This was Sondheim’s favorite version of the song.
Dylan Simon
I just came here from an interview clip of Stephen S. in 2014. The show was getting ready yo open in London. He said when you hear her sing this you realize you’ve never heard it before.
Yup
I can see why! She is incredible.
help! where did he say this?
@@cards0486 He said the film version of West Side Story was the greatest ever version...it wasn't. Said the same thing about Woke Company, I hated it. Do you think he might have just wanted to sell tickets?
I love how much of a super manic, chaotic good Imelda Staunton plays Mama Rose. She always has that crazed look in her eyes like shes planning her next move while planning her next move.
Well she was Umbridge😂
@@mikkoparker6241 More so...the real Mama was nuts.
She's got Kris Jenner shook when it comes to momagers
I cackled. Thank you
This comment made me cackle like a witch
Every Mama Rose has a different trait depending on the actress, and Imelda playing it SEEMS SO RIGHT.
You said it perfectly
just an fyi: stephen sondheim said that this was one of his favorite performances EVER to date
i would love to know where he said this! this makes me so happy to hear haha
giselle q this interview! czcams.com/video/C-98CjUzmp4/video.html
Every Rose plays this song so differently, it's kind of hard to compare them tbh. Imelda gives her this desperation, like she can't possibly go on if she gives up the dream. Versus Patti, who played it like she was a very manic, almost psychotic woman lost in a delusion. Bernadette played her a little more subdued, like Rose was so caught up in this fantasy dream that she couldn't wake up when the writing was on the wall. The two movie versions took different routes as well- Bette going the more manic route and Rosalind very bitter and angry at the opening of the number. And of course Ethel Merman was the original and hers kind of set the mold as this big, showy number. Definitely the delusional Rose with a little less of Patti's mania. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I like what Imelda is doing here with her acting choices, even if I've liked the singing of some other Roses a little better. ^^
Agreed. Imelda is an actor who sings, and I think gives a perfect performance for the character even if her singing isn't perfect.
I love Imelda's singing for the desperate character she is playing here. I think the vocals suit the performance. You're right about the many ways this character is played by the different actresses. I was watching to see how she would do, and I couldn't figure out what I was missing and why her performance stood out until I read your comment, and it really makes sense.
Imelda did nail her rendition of this song. In terms of acting, she’s an actor who can sing a number. But in my opinion, Mama Rose by Patti was something I could not get my mind of. Her singing, her vocal ability to have it sung like it was nothing. Almost every vocalists I heard sing this song had a their own different way to act & sing it.
Tyne Daly had this manic unexpectedness and extraordinary desperation in this number. She was furious on stage in the 30th anniv. revival. Bernadette Peters...I mean...It's just weird, as if she was never really awake.
1:13 the way she's pointing her fingers makes it look like a threat or a hostage situation!
Which is kinda accurate.
Truly masterful performance, she brings so many layers of the character through her physical acting.
Omg I didn't even notice that until you point that out! Thanks lol 🤣
I saw this show from the sixth row and the emotion pouring out of Imelda Staunton was like an assault. I have never experienced anything like it, possibly the most impressive performance I have seen in a theater.
Finally! A Mama Rose I really believe!!! Kudos to Imelda Staunton; she knocked this "Gypsy" out of the ballpark.
thefabulousthomasj ANDDDD PATTI LUPONE AND ETHEL MERMAN.
@@madeleineclaire222 No, I believed Imelda was Rose Hovick. Patti LuPone and Ethel Merman are excellent performers, but I don't believe them as Mama Rose because they are strong personalities, and for me, that gets in the way. They sell the musicality of the role but not the characterization.
Have you heard Angela Lansburys portrayal
Imelda Staunton elevates everything on stage she touches. I've seen her twice now in musicals and she was the standout of both performances both times. Damn that girl can play to a theatre.
I saw this show in the theatre a few days ago and I've never sobbed so hard in a theatre before. It seems like something harmless, upbeat and encouraging with no context, but the way the director had envisioned the show I watched, it hit home and really made me cry seeing how miserable and hurt Luis was
Mama Rose is really a miserable character, living vicariously through her daughters, first June and then Louise. She only loves her daughters in so far as what they can gain her through show business. She doesn't love them for who they are. Louise understands that and knows she'll only get her mother's approval and love by doing her bidding. In the end, Mama Rose essentially prostitutes her own daughter in the strip shows just to stay in "show business", forcing Louise to compromise her dignity, but Louise still goes along with it, desperate to get her mother's approval, which never really comes. That's why in the end, when Rose says, "What did I do all this for?" Louise answers, "I thought you did it for me, Mama." It's all very sad. Gypsy isn't a feel-good show, and Rose isn't a very good mother. This show is almost always staged in an upbeat way when that doesn't really fit with the relationships or what's going on in the show. It sounds like the director of the production you saw got it right.
Sweet lord she killed this performance!!!!! Sheer perfection. I love how she’s able to breathe life into ever character she’s given.
This is the greatest female role in musical theatre! Imelda is superb!
Mama Rose is certainly the Mount Everest of Obnoxious characters : a ruthless egomaniac who doesn't give a damn about her own children unless they are fulfilling her fantasies.
Wow! I never knew Imelda had a voice like that! I really liked this version. She was amazing!
I love that her Rose captures the pathos of a devastated mother. She has just been deserted by the child that she put every ounce of her heart into for years. Now that is gone. So she immediately transfers all that attention onto a poor unsuspecting Louise who is not physically or emotionally equipped to assume June's position. I love this performance!
For those saying she's overacting....... Do you have anything about Broadway singing? 🤣 I saw this live and it was absolutely magical, an iconic West End performance, standing ovations all around
lea salonga sang it best
@@emhu2594…disagree, Ive seen both women sing this song live …..Imelda is simply the best by far!
I can’t imagine anything being more perfect than that. Absolutely amazing performance.
This is incredible, like having a full breakdown on stage there at the end because she wants it so much.
Yes, love the intensity and desperation she brought to it! Stunning performance!
Saw this live....literally the best thing I've ever seen on stage. Awesome
Brilliant! She was born for this role!
I love this; she's great. And I'm all for new stagings of classic musicals. That said, I've never seen a performance of this song where Herbie is not comforting Louise in an embrace, and I miss that.
Haha same
I've seen live and tv performances of this, but she did the best of anyone I ever saw, what a talent!!!!
Came here after hearing Staunton was cast in Follies. I was concerned with her singing (as Follies is such a technical, emotional show). Oh my gosh, no worries now! This is such in line with Merman's original take. On point and super emotional!
she's gonna be in Follies?
I had a dream, a dream about you, baby
It's gonna come true, baby
They think that we're through, but baby...
You'll be swell, you'll be great
Gotta have the whole world on a plate
Starting here, starting now
Honey, everything's coming up roses!
Clear the decks, clear the tracks
You got nothing to do but relax
Blow a kiss, take a bow
Honey, everything's coming up roses!
Now it's your inning
Stand the world on it's ear
Said it's spinning
That'll be just the beginning
Curtain up, light the lights
You got nothing to hit, but the heights
You'll be swell, you'll be great
I can tell, just you wait
The lucky star I talk about is due
Honey, everything's coming up roses
For me and for you!
You can do it
All you need is a hand
We can do it
Momma is gonna see to it
Curtain up, light the lights
We got nothing to hit but the heights
I can tell, wait and see
There's a bell
Follow me
And nothing's gonna stop us
Till we're through
Honey, everything's coming up roses
And daffodils
Everything's coming up
Sunshine and Santa Claus
Everything's gotta be
Bright lights and lollipops
Everything's coming up roses
For me and for you...
Do you know it by hear though???
She absolutely blew me away when I saw this in London. Of all the performances I've seen on stage on Broadway, London, or anywhere else, nothing topped Staunton's performance in Gypsy. It's too bad she didn't get a chance to do it on Broadway too, she would have taken New York by storm.
Dude she’s such a good mamma rose what the heck.
UMBRIDGE CAN SING WHAHT THE HECK
She does the best crazy rendition of Mama Rose...as she probably really was.
98% of comments. UMBRIDGE CAN SING!
I’ve seen so many Rose’s and many live, including Tyne I’m her deservedly Tony winning performance and Pattidoing what we knew she was born to do. But of all I’ve seen on stage and screen, Imelda was the most extraordinary. She brought the real Rose to life. The bitter, cruel, mentally imbalanced woman that is underneath the surface. It was an acting job of power and committment that made the show new for me.
Imelda is truly an amazing actress
This was literally the best performance of Momma Rose I’ve ever seen!
This was perfect in every way. The idiomatic Jimmy Durante style accent the belted voice well placed and supported the diction flow it was ideal. Clear without excessive mannerisms and frankly other nonsense that can often get in the way of this complex role. This was truly diamond brilliant. How could anyone ever miss the effect of Staunton's delivery? It's a home tun. Brava.
This Rose of Imelda is scary but it does indeed blossom. Determination can be frightening--and elevating.
She's great. Her performance is large (as it needs to be in a large venue.) More importantly, her performance is truthful.
I saw her in Sweeney Todd and she really freaked me out! She was chilling. LOL. What an actress.
My Quarantine Tuesday is gonna be JUST FINE now that I've seen this! Imelda for the win!
Just finished watching on PBS and it was amazing.
KatyDelMar Same 😁😁
What's PBS, I want to see the whole show, missed it in 2015 in London and I wish I went. I think I didn't go because I was scared of Umbridge! Plus I didn't know it could be this good. The storyline didn't really interest me.
ironguanyin123 Public Broadcasting Studio/Station. I don't know if they have it in Europe, but it's a thing here in the U.S.
@@aisadal2521 I think BBC is the equivalent of PBS. It's airs a lot of filmed musicals and a lot of the same content as PBS. I don't think they're owned by the same company, just have a similar target audience.
I had goosebumps staring from the first line.... what a performer!
She is incredible. A Legend. I saw her live on this production and I will always be breathless by her talent
Our Imelda ,.... just brilliant ! 🌟
The best Rose I've seen so far!
Wonderful performance. I’m so excited for Hello Dolly 6th July at the Palladium. Go Imelda, go
I watched it on channel 13 and it was fantastic unbelievable I never saw anything so good the best I wìsh I was there in person to see it.
My friend said Umbridge was a singer. He did not lie ;)
I think this is the best version acting wise.
The performance of a lifetime.
This is amazing!!!
Woow, she is amazing
Dear Lord, I miss musical theatre in this pandemic
Ridiculously good
Great actress, awesome singer!! Is there anything she can't do?!
Imelda killed this performance! Bravo!!👏👏👏🫰🫶
That was just freakin' awesome.
Mesmerizing. Absolutely mesmerizing.
one of my favorite roses and i've heard them all.
That was Amazing 🤩
Imelda, Imelda, Imelda... Simply delightful and enchanting.
Umbridge? That is surreal.
Phenomenal performance 👏
Not bad!!!!!! She definitely has the vocal chops and acting ability to put that song over!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!
Her acting range is a whole circle.
Wow wow wow! Fantastic performance.
I didn't know she sang! I was just looking up the song. Wow she is wonderful!
Wonderful!!!!!!
👏👏👏👏👏👏
CRUSHING IT !!
Missed seeing Imelda in Gypsy but I’ve just got tickets to see her in Hello Dolly in the summer! Looking forward to it.
Umbridge and Irene Adler meet at last.
Outstanding!
Wow! Goosebumps!
Wow! Such an atypical performer for this role. One imagines Ethel Merman, Rosalyn Russell and Bette Midler not Delores Unbridge (Imelda Staunton). But damn! She pulls it off brilliantly!!! Would love to have seen this version live!
Gypsy, a permanent fixture in my Top-5 Musicals of all time, for over 60 years. And one of three where the lyrics have been long-committed to memory, making it impossible not to sing along.
I love Imelda Staunton. She's fantastic.
i thought that was umbridge!!! ok yasssss!!!! love it
This is everything and more 🌹
Wow, she did great!
Fantastic!!!
Brilliant ❤
Wow, I had no idea Imelda Staunton could sing.
It's hard to believe that tiny body has such a powerful set of lungs.
I just got tickets to see this play. Never saw it before. The actress I saw on stage was great, but Imelda is acting every syllable!
Shes truly terrifying...
First Umbridge and now this😂
can't stop rewatching 2:18 , such incredible chaotic energy
I love her!!!
Brilliant
chills
Pretty amazing.
Love it! Yeah!❤️❤️❤️
hey, Umbridge is finally an encouraging, nice person!
Not exactly. The character Rose is controlling and delusional.
She's the biggest Stage mother ever
Lol nope
Had no clue she could sing until now oh my GOD
Damn. She’s amazing.
Marvellous.
This is the Best thing i'm Earth.
Umbrige changed....
Umbridge is that you?
IMELDA STAUNTON CAN SING!?! HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS!!??!!
