Something to keep in mind regarding Isaac's characterisation: While he didn't speak in the original, the mission objectives in your log were actually written from his perspective, and they did provide a window into what he was thinking throughout the events of the game (namely, that he was flat-out terrified).
I think my favorites were in the chapter with the fuel and centrifuge where he either didn't believe Hammond on how stuff was broken, but then went "Well okay, he's right about this one I guess..."
I think the way they did it for him talking makes him more human than just a killer that's silent. He only talks when he's talking to people and that's it. I prefer that over just being silent.
I expect, but can only hope, that the game devs didn’t overlook this when building Isaac’s character responses throughout the remake

14:15 Isaac turning his head to face the slasher right behind him is actually a pretty genius way to warn the player of off camera threats.
I’m glad they implemented this. It was in the original (not an enemy nearby but he would turn his head).

I really hope that not only we get a remake of Dead Space 2 but a straight up reimagining of Dead Space 3. DS3's action feels so disconnected with its story.

I never considered the horror of what the Ishimura actually IS, being a planet cracking machine, but you're dead on about that. The concept alone is scarier than I gave it credit for.

My first (second?) time playing through the original, this was not lost on me. It made me wonder how much the actions of the Marker was plain evilness, and how much was just... self-defense.
And then Dead Space 2 came out.
Yeah it’s really something that we’re so nervous about the religious cult aspect that could potentially harness a doomsday scenario, while overlooking that apparently cooperations have so run amok they have several planetary doomsday devices just to grind a profit.
Having never played the original, I always felt like I had missed the boat a bit, even with the discourse surrounding 2 and 3, but I definitely wasn't into that type of game 10+ years ago. That said, things have changed and I am SUPER stoked to finally play this gem. I'm glad my impulse buy last night is solidified by this review. Lights out, headphones on!

I almost never play games at night with the lights off, just because spending too long in a dark room with only the tv for light eventually gives me a headache. But I definitely had to play a few hours with all the lights off with this remake, totally worth it.

I am absolutely in love playing this. It feels entirely familiar and yet completely brand new all at the same time. Loving all of the newly added areas to explore and how unpredictable the enemies are when you head back through spaces you’ve already cleared to find locked doors with the new security clearance system. The audio is *chiefs kiss*
Have you tried to the force gun yet? It is absolutely glorious! Was never a fan of it in the original but after watching the flesh being literally blasted off a necro's skeleton in one tap there's just no going back :D I'm on NG+ now and can't get enough

This gotta sting for the callisto protocol team with their game getting absolutely bodied by the critics (rightfully so), and now the remaster of their own game getting universal acclaim.
To be honest I didn't have much hope for the game after hearing it was meant to be a PUBG spinoff.

how much of the original visceral team from 2008 is actually on the callisto protocol team though. turtle rock paraded it to the moon and back that they "were the team behind left 4 dead" but the credits showed barely any of the original people were actually left.
Why rightfully so?
I think Isaac talking is a huge improvement. I've never felt silent protagonists work quite well when it's not a self insert. For something like DS or Pokemon or whatever its fine. But Isaac has his own goals and mind, having him be voiced makes more sense. I get it, the first game has its own identity separate from 2, large in part to Isaacs silence echoed further by the silence and loneliness of the Ishimura itself. But for the sake of story and creating a character. His voice is a huge improvement.
I also think making Issac just another guy instead of a silent bad ass benefits the game. He’s not a guy sent in to destroy the evil on the ship. He’s an engineer who is trying his best to survive this nightmare and search for Nicole
I strongly disagree. I haven't played the remake yet but I already know Isaac does not say things like, I gotta go save my bitch or I got it man stfu. I don't care about his feelings.
I already know the motivations. I share in those. As far as voice lines all they are going to do is make me feel like I have a damn millennial tagging along whose pathetic commentary doesn't fit what is happening.

100% agree this game is already blowing my mind 1 hour in. Interestingly enough, dead space 2008 was the survival horror that got me into this genre. Never before had i given it a chance. I'm glad I did because this has become one of my favorite genres ever.

its genuinely nice to see an anticipated game do well. This seems like such a rare thing nowadays. Every game I hope will succeed ends up being badly flawed or mediocre, and I'm glad this isn't one of those.

It's 100% exactly the case for me; this game (the original, technically) was *the very game* that converted me to the genre.
I loved it so much, I literally binged through both 1 and 2 in the same game session. It might have been the very first game that I'd ever done that with.
Slightly over rated for me. I just couldn't be bothered after episode 10 and it's nowhere near as good as Alien isolation. I'm just on my 2nd run on collisto protocol which I'm just having more fun on.
The decrease in uploads on this channel have really left a dead space in my heart recently. It's good to finally have you back Austin and the guy who does the voice over too.

If you followed the diary of the development of this game, you could see how passionate the devs were about this project.
Probably because the devs didn't want to be forced to make some quirky multiplayer shooter for once and actually had the chance to work on a real game.

I'm one of those people that did, they even changed the sound for the plasma cutter because people complained about it not sounding "punchier".
The choices you have to make regarding what to provide power to and what to turn off are really clever. It was a really cool experience feeling that sense of dread when after being forced to choose between powering the elevators or the lights, you suddenly realize there are no stairs around lol.
Total War Warhammer 3 has a similar start up, when you press play in steam the launcher opens with "Play" which is normal or "Continue campaign" which takes you straight to your latest save. It's a small thing but it's nice to have
What a stark contrast from The Callisto Protocol. Great port, scarier, looks better than ever and New Game Plus included. Leading up to release I constantly thought that The Callisto Protocol was going to be the better product between the two and had a whole lot more hype behind it. What a funny world we live in.
I was so excited for both games and like you was skeptical of DS remake and interested in callisto. But then we got more trailers for CP and i knew the combat wasnt going to my thing, along with EA motive showing us how the remake was coming along, thats when I knew I was going to like the remake A LOT more.

That was one of the two things that pissed me off the most about Callisto protocol. It didn’t have a fucking new game plus. It’s 2023. There is zero excuse for that. Like wtf is the point of all the late game only weapons and items if we only have them for 15 minutes?
Also, why did it take me only 8 hours to beat the game at maximum security?

You are one of the first reviewers I have heard that wasn’t entirely on board with Issac having a voice in this game, but I can totally understand and appreciate your perspective on the topic. Personally I don’t have an issue with this change as we have pre-established character with DS2 and 3 that I have gotten used to, and it gives the reboot a fresher story experience. It’s awesome that they got the original actor on the project, and from what I heard and can tell, I believe they even used the actors face for this game’s depiction of Isaac.
the voice actor staying the same was great, but i personally really dislike the new look for isaac. i saw a tweet saying they managed to 'white wash a white guy', and honestly yeah. he looks like a youth pastor. nicole also looks *a lot* older than him and theres been a ton of really (sometimes even misogynistic) feedback surrounding her model. its sad because this really seems to be the ONE area where the game is lacking, everything else looks amazing

I still remember when I first played the Dead Space game in 2008 that Asteroid shooting level was hard as fuck and even after all these years still gives me chills. I'm happy to hear that they've changed that level.
Having played through the original on PC ten plus times with the Dead Space Mouse Fix installed, I can say the turret section is a lot less frustrating on PC

Darksiders 2 actually pulled off that loading into game trick all the way back in 2012. The main menu would be wherever you last saved and as soon as you hit continue you were playing.
I have to say, as someone who missed a lot of great games back in the day, it's awesome to see classics rereleased with the glow-up treatment.

Besides the game was advertised as a melee base so if you bought it that's your fault. The dodging mechanics I don't have a problem with. Could it improve? Yes, but every game should improve on mechanics. Callisto and Dead Space have a lot of things in common. Which makes you and everyone else's biased comments laughable.

@@gianniphipps180 Callisto is an awful horror game, has a bare bones repetitive melee system, and wet toilet paper guns.
It isn’t a bad game, but it’s not what they claimed it would be. Callisto Protocol flopped because of misleading advertising and self hype, + the awful performance issues on release.
They killed their own game, and EA made sure their game did better. EA would have been sued out the ass if they had paid reviewers to trash a game, and we would have heard about it.
I was pretty young in 08 when I played the original. I could only play it in increments of an hour or so before I had to switch out the disc in my PS3 to something more lighthearted like Burnout or Ratchet and Clank.
It was a damn good game that still holds up to this day and it's fantastic to see Dead Space back again. I hope this leads to an eventual Dead Space 4.

ya im trying to think cuz i think there some limited games that do it, but im having a hard time remembering. And the thing is most people use gamer profiles anyway so this whole loading the save automatically can be easily done without much frustration.
I've just finished binge playing all three DS games on my Series S and I was amazed how good those games still hold up today. I also was kind of a little sad how most modern games are objectively worse.
This remake makes me hopeful that gaming might be at a point to take a good look at itself and realise the good and bad parts.
And this seems definitely one of the good ones.
Deadspace always held a special place in my heart , in 2008 when this came out it was the same week my grandpa died and while I was staying at home grieving (my school had a policy where you had to stay home for 5 days when a family member died) I spent the whole week playing and replaying it and it honestly helped me through the process by providing an amazing distraction during nights I felt sad needless to say I will be playing this after work today and drinking a cold one in honour of my grandpa lol

Part of what set Dead Space apart was the internal logic of the Ishimura narrative and design. Everything made sense and your interactions within that space also made sense. So different when you have the so called 'spiritual successor' Calisto creating environments for gameplay only - spike walls with logical function except impaling enemies, monsters locking themselves in chests, messages on walls that couldn't possibly have been written by anyone etc. Good old-fashioned immersion in a game world and SO important for any survival/combat horror. I'm so pleased they pulled this off. Must buy.

Wow, I really wasn’t expecting this. It enters the annals of history that Resident Evil and Final Fantasy 7 made of defining remakes.
I had a good feeling about this one from watching all the promotional and developmental stuff about it. Glad to see it lived up to its own legacy
Considering what I've heard from the reviewers generally i think this Remake is exactly what I wanted it to be. Congratulations to the team.
EA releasing a game, a remake of a beloved survival horror game at that... and it runs perfectly, has been made with love and care, respected the original while also improving on it in almost every way, it's only 31 gigabytes, has new side content and QoL improvements that do not diminish the experience in any way...

Even Isaacs weaponless walking animation has some personality to it. It's something you'd think they'd leave at the bare minimum work because it's barely seen but now he actually looks like a human being instead of a crab in a suit

I definitely wouldn't say no to that, but I'm kind of hoping this means we may get something new for the franchise, the DS3 DLC ending being how it all ended never sat right for me, but will have to wait and see what happens I guess.
Dead space 2 still looks and plays amazing. Truly unnecessary.

Would rather hope they make DLC's for this game. I don't think Dead Sapce 2 is in dire need of a remake. Don't get me wrong, but i think some fresh wind would be better. New stories, environment and enemies.
I know this may come off as a mere pipe dream, but I really hope after the success of this remake that Dead Space 2 could potentially get a similar treatment at some point

dead space 2 still mechanically plays like a new game. while it would be nice to see the ubermorph but with fancy graphics, the game doesn't really need that treatment. what does need a remake however, is dead space 3. it actually has a lot of cool ideas that could be made better such as the cosmic horror aspect as well as the co op, but man, the enemies really need some editing
@@cementchewer I think the entire trilogy of Dead Space should be remade, but I do agree with you that Dead Space 3 needs a complete rework.
A subtle but cool addition is the dialogue can change in some areas depending on whether you have low health.
I will never forget my first time playing the deadspace og. It was so terrifying, i love horror movies/games but they don’t actually invoke any FEELINGS from me. This game…I remember i would need a break after 30-45 mins of playing because my nerves would get so jittery and fried. I would feel SO RELUCTANT when i was told i had to go to a new section to do this or that because i knew i was about to face new/worse/likely more difficult horrors than previously encountered but because youre so invested you press on despite not really wanting to enter that next long dark hallway. Everything i just said, coming from a video game 14 years ago? Makes me sad when i think if those days versus what we usually get today.

You're missing out on a lot of good games man, I know EA is a shitty company, but there are still plenty of talented devs that have made great games, Titanfall 2 and Jedi Fallen Order are ones that instantly come to mind.

Interesting to hear that Dead Space has a quick resume feature built in. I play the majority of games now on the Xbox Series X which pretty much has Quick Resume available on every game so its good to see games are adding that as a default for everyone.
Well quick resume is available on console because it sleeps the app but saves the state, and since there's only so many things you can do on a console at any given time it's not hard to do.
However dead space is doing something entirely different because the game does this from a fully closed state, not a deep sleep or anything like that. It immediately starts loading the map and game the second you launch it, instead of waiting for you to hit continue. Which is something I have never seen before
@@illusions500 realistically its the same output so whatever the mechanics are doesn't make a huge difference if it can become common place.
@@BlueBloodPenn sort of. the only difference you'd have if this type of quick start is implemented you'd notice that even when you fully close a game it'd still have a quick resume feature. instead of being after you launch it and then essentially minimize it
The part at 18.50 where you get the Flamethrower - As I approached it I was sure that the body hanging out of the fleshy wall was going to snap awake for a jump scare as you pick it up.
For the Steam Deck I heard you can get it somewhat playable if you install it to the internal Drive.
I hope they can make a sequel somehow, now that they have the experience for it.
Also I love the peeling system so much, strategic dismemberment was always innovative to the point even RE took a lot of notes. But peeling allows proper use of which weapon, which enemy and which limb can be cut, making each encounter more dynamic and fluid perhaps even more so than the original Dead Space.
Also I can't help but notice, is the enemy AI a bit improved? They usually didn't make those calculated charges in the classic version.
Trust me, the second good reviews came up, there's already a dead space 2 remake being drawn up.

As someone playing through the Callisto Protocol right now and enjoying it, it makes me glad to know this means the Dead Space remake is gonna be phenomenal when I pick it up.
It's just a breath of fresh air sometimes when the game just landed so well after all the others that we rather forget about.

I was interested in this remake since I never played the original, and the review put me over the edge, so I will at the very least buy it and give it a shot and see what it does for me as a result.

it was faster from what I remember and Isaac was also a little more vocal when stomping.
@@MtlRocker no, Isaac would step forward with either his right or left foot, stomp, and then go back into neutral. The difference is that in DS2, the stomp can be chained into repeated stomps and he would get fucking pissed, it was great
And the Zero G gameplay too.
@@MtlRocker it was, but both the stomp and the punch in dead space 1 were basically unusable in combat they were extremely slow, if you didnt kill them in the first hit you were definitely getting hit back. You can probably stomp 3 or 4 times in the remake or ds2/ds3 for every 1 stomp in the original
Such great gaming memories from the first 2 dead space games. It was the first game I played (just released) after setting up my gaming room, it had surround sound and an HD projector. Scared the piss out of me. So happy the remake was made with care and I look forward to jumping back in on my current gaming set up.
The plasma rifle actually goes hard in this game. I never actually shoot bullets, but use the alt-fire and you have 2 noobtoobs or 2 prox mines per mag.

Between Star Wars Squadrons and this, EA Motive is very quickly becoming a standout dev team in this industry. I’m very keen to see what they do with that Iron Man game now. I’ve never played a Dead Space game but as a big RE fan I’m definitely gonna pick this up.
Yeah, wish Motive would add more DLC for Squadrons and revive the game cause nobody is playing it.
After the Callisto protocol I was pretty worried and hesitant to get this but all the reviews are good so I’m about to sit down and play it, never played the originals so pretty excited 😁

I am honestly shocked that EA didn't screw it up.
After beating this game and immediately starting NG+ this is 100% worth it. An overall complete improvement. I personally thought that the Voice actor that played Issac did it perfectly and it fleshed out the story in a more believable way. He just sounded so awesome with the helmet on. Also the old game still holds up and is still available to play with a silent Isaac.

Hob was the first game I played that loaded your most recent save during booting and the transition was seamless. Also loved that feature and want more game to do it.
06:00 I remember the old Infamous doing that on PS3 and I missed this feature ever since. Nobody needs long title sequences and menus if you just want to load into a single player save. I was amazed that Infamous was the last and only game to do this up to now...
I don’t think anyone thought a Dead Space Remake made by EA would turn out this good. A truly amazing game that possibly sets the bar for all other future AAA video game remakes.

If you dont want to pay full price for this one than you should not want to pay full price for any game in my opinion (what is fine), but if you are open to paying full price than there is no reason not to for this one

I strongly recommend people to like and subscribe to this amazing Channel.
Now you can actually run it on the deck super well! Smooth 30 or 40 on medium to high settings depending on whether you want dynamic resolution or not. I opted out of that and am running it at 30 fps on medium settings. The freezing is gone now especially since I'm running it off of the ssd
Resident Evil 4 didn’t have dismemberment but it absolutely did encourage shooting enemies in different ways. If you aren’t shooting enemies in the legs you’re making the game harder for yourself.
I really want to play this remake but $70 is a very hard sell for a remake of a game. I have played through multiple times. So I estimate my first playthrough of this remake to take around 6 to 8 hours since I'm familiar with the levels and combat already, Which is a steep price point for the amount of game time you get. Going to have to wait for the game to drop down to $40 during the summer sale.
The New Game+ and secret ending stuff has me sold for replayability, but I agree the price is steep. Not because this game isn't worth it, just because games in general are hugely over priced. Like most people I'll be waiting for steep sales.
