  • Cosmo and Dibs are dressing up, and are surprised to find themselves taking on certain characteristics as they change outfits - even to the point of being nasty bullies. Indira Joshi is the one working on the market stall today, and she soon puts things right. This episode was originally broadcast on Thursday, 24th January, 1985, but I think this recording comes from a repeat around a year later.
Besides the main plot, there's an animation to look out for that teaches about eggs and chicks; Tamsin and her friends go on a nice relaxing river trip; and Indira's choice of fruit leads to her reading the book Avocado Baby (by John Burningham). One vaguely interesting oddity is that the end credits are for the whole week's worth of You and Me, which means people not in this one get a mention. Slightly more interesting is that both Frances Kay and Francis Wright get an "Additional Scripts" credit, which I think means that they ad libbed enough as Cosmo and Dibs to be considered writers. Incidentally, my favourite fact about Francis Wright (Psammead, Colin the Bat, The Head in Art Attack etc. etc.) is that it was he who delivered the infamous "And what about the vegetables?" line on Spitting Image not too long after this - one of the greatest set-ups to a gag ever. So now you know.
Many thanks to Sally for lending me this tape.

Have you got any more You and Me episodes? I have enjoyed watching all these, can you remember an episode where Henry the Kangaroo looks for the words "You and Me" on the TV screen? All I can remember is Henry switching on a TV and the old pre-1985 BBC 1 globe comes on before he sees the titles. I saw that particular episode as a repeat in 1987, the BBC Genome website says it was first shown in February 1984 and I also found that only the early Cosmo and Dibs series were on BBC 1.

There may be more You and Me, but I can't say for certain at the moment. That one you describe with Henry the Kangaroo sort of rings a bell - hopefully a recording will show up one day somewhere!

Thanks. I hope to see more You and Me episodes at some point. I can remember when it was revamped and they were in the house with Baxter and Spike and my brother watched it at that stage. I saw the series from 1984-87 and I was too old for the late 80s series with Larrington Walker and one or two other new presenters, but my brother watched them and at least they still had the market in 1988-89.

@@Matt571 I remember a similar era to you, but I think they were still repeating some of the ones from before the Cosmo/Dibs/market stall revamp at that stage, because I remember seeing some of those, too.

I can vaguely remember seeing repeats of the earlier series as well which would be about early 1984, they seemed to repeat them close together.

@@Matt571 It would have been the (very) early 90s when I saw them. I think they rebroadcast the mid-80s and late-80s episodes interchangeably (though presumably, in the original three-episode blocks so the end credits still made sense).
