  • Evans Cycles' Pinnacle has launched a brand new direct drive smart trainer which costs £500, much cheaper than many other similar smart trainers. In this video I put it through its paces to see what it's like and talk about the benefits of smart trainers
    In association with Evans Cycles who had no editorial input into this video and viewed in on general release. You can find out more about the new Pinnacle HC trainer here bit.ly/3JazCNV

    That looks great, David, and as a user of one in the '80s, I'd be up for long sessions with a box set of Tour tapes on VHS--and I enjoyed your mentioning how we used to entertain ourselves and prepare for the races ahead. It was fun and It was a challenge to ride in their wake.

    Just bought this after seeing your Tweet about it being reduced to £70.00! Been using a Tacx turbo trainer and wanted to get a smart trainer and this seemed to good a deal to turn down!

      I'm also lucky enough to have bagged this bargain. Quick q.. how do I pair it with my Garmin 510? I've used the 6 digit ID off the sticker on the side of the trainer but the Garmin keeps saying it's not found. Any ideas?

    David - thanks for this... It is nice to see that the prices of some - albeit off-brand - smart direct drive trainers are coming down now - - I'm still on a Kickr Snap which I feel is one of the best on-wheel smart trainers and will continue with it until prices come down a bit more on the brand name units - I worry a bit about service and parts availability here in Japan on the non name brand stuff even though the prices are attractive and availability is getting better in EU and the US...

    Hi David, thanks for the informative review - excellent content as ever. As someone who’s new to turbo trainers and wants to start, can you advise whether any cassette can be used with this product (Shimano, Campag etc.). Once fitted, do you ever need to change gear or do you simply stick to one (mid range) gear and allow the trainer to do the rest? Thanks to you or anyone else for some advice.

    @coolhandluke1978 Před 2 lety

    This is a good design like the Kickr Core, I’d argue do you need anything better? The only trainer that has my future interest is the Oreka O7, however no current reviews I can find (also can run without mains!)

    Let's hope either DC Rainmaker or Shane Miller put it through their accuracy tests...

    • @davidarthur
      @davidarthur  Před 2 lety

      Because testing it against other trainers really shows accuracy right? Consistency is the key thing with power meters and smart trainers and that that provide consistent and repeatable data

    • @phil_d
      @phil_d Před 2 lety +3

      @@davidarthur If you're using a trainer for training, rather than say fun (Zwift?), then I want to know my interval really is 220w and not 240 or 200. So yes, accuracy is very important! Their testing can also reveal some gremlins that may not be apparent at first. It's all about dragging competition and standards higher IMO.

    • @davidarthur
      @davidarthur  Před 2 lety +2

      True - but how do you truly know what 200 watts is? Which trainer is really the most accurate. All those overlay graphs of different trainers and power meters tell you is how they compare relative to each other, and relies on an assumption that a certain brand or product is the most accurate

    • @phil_d
      @phil_d Před 2 lety +2

      @@davidarthur Exactly, how a new Trainer compares to the current crop!! There's no assumption, but years of testing from both of them so they are able to pitch a new product against a know datum point. And that's the the crux, do I want to spend a fair chunk of money based on a real life test against a known datum, or take for read what the marketing says and hope?
      Don't get me wrong, I welcome new, lower priced, in-house badged products. But, they must perform as promised and this is what these 2 chaps are able to tell us.

    • @Higuma_JPN
      @Higuma_JPN Před 2 lety +4

      @@davidarthur I think I remember Shane / GP Lama saying some time ago in order to test a given Trainers accuracy and set a baseline for comparison he did test the Power values for a known trainer by placing a weight on a crank spindle to get a accurate datum point and has compared other / future trainers against that... So I do think that there is a way to actually test or zero the accuracy...
      All that being said I TOTTALY AGREE with your sentiment - for 98% of all riders / trainers - CONSISTENCY is the only thing that matters... 100w today = 100w next week is all that matters to me...

    You can buy a few smart trainers for that money. That's similar to the jet-black smart. I bought a flux 2 which is working well but I hate how there's no on off power switch on the unit itself which is quite bizarre in 2022. Next trainer for me will have a self generating power supply.

    Hi David - I really enjoy your videos, but on these sponsored videos, I am not sure what your relationship is to the sponsor, whether they get to review the content, whether they’re paying you for a positive review, etc. It would be really helpful if you prefaced sponsored videos with a summary of the terms. I’d recommend Chase the Summit or Kofuzi on the running side as examples that provide transparency. Thanks!
