I think the native storage in the Switch's hardware is like, the only issue that is stopping them from including Gamecube in NSO. If the Switch 2 has a storage over even 100 GB (which I think would be stupid not to), I'd say is VERY likely GC comes to NSO. I'd even go as far to say the Wii would come pretty soon after too because it's basically the same as GC emulation wise and it has WAY larger base with nostalgia.

To be honest, it really depends on the game! All GameCube Discs were max 4GB in size, but most of it was junk data (literally filled with 0s). Best example is the original Animal Crossing which is less than 100MB because it was essentially a ported N64 game.
Your point still stands in the sense that eventually it would become too much, but it seems like Nintendo doesn't want to put all their top games on there anyway, so it likely could be optimized to fit more than we expect or they push for their SD card sales haha

    • @sunxnes

They dont see a financial reason to bring gc to nso when people are willing to pay 60 for gc remakes ala TYD

    • @Link4750
      @Link4750 Před 2 měsíci

@@sunxnes The only incentive would be to make "easier money" because remaking a game costs more resources than just emulating it on NSO services. They'd likely have another tier for their subscriptions like what they did with the N64 and Genesis if they were to ever do it.
Perhaps we will need to wait for the next console regardless for it to get more wide spread, despite it being possible to do on the current Switch

The main issue with Saturn games is that all of their masters are lost. Back in the 1990s, Sega wanted to house all the masters for SS games, and then proceeded to misplace or junk all the masters during an office move. That's why all SS games other platforms have run under emulation, e.g. Princess Crown's PSP release.

Just want to go on record and say I LOVE the idea that NSO subs get to play the 'upgraded' version of Switch games on Switch 2. You're not manipulating players, and it's a massive upgrade that takes devs and is well worth the money for those who care. Great idea!
I also think Nintendo selling digital first for one week would be a nice way to stick it to scalpers and avoid leaks etc. It wouldn't affect me in the slightest, as I'd work on my backlog and then get the game a little later.

I feel like goving nso expansion pack members an advantage like early preeorder access for theor next system would be a huge perk, would drive new memberships, and to some extent could offset scalping. Not sure the right way to do it but steam requiring you to have an active account in order to preorder their deck was a good approach.

NSO is the only online service I don't pay for.
The fact we're still paying for peer-to-peer just annoys me too much. Nothing has changed since the OG Wii's service, only now we pay for it.
On top of that, there's no way to buy the games, you just stream them all. That's not even getting into lack of features that have been STANDARD everywhere else for over a decade... i.e. voice chat, party/lobby systems, basic messaging system (or ANY communication system whatsoever), achievements, universal cloud saves, normal suite of apps (why is Switch the only system in nearly 2 decades without Netflix?), etc. etc. etc....
Adding random Genesis, GBA, and N64 with zero schedule doesn't help either. At least with Xbox & Playstation I know I'm getting several games multiple times per month (MODERN games), but you never know with Nintendo.
The one thing that could be cool is if DLC for all 1st party games came as free updates if you have the expansion pack. They did that with a handful of games, but knowing ALL future games would offer this could at least be good value.
Lastly, Nintendo *STILL* used bloody friend codes! It's so stupid. I'm not even convinced my digital purchases will be compatible with future hardware like Xbox & PS, or if they'll tie it to some weird hardware transfer like Wii to Wii U.

You're likely to see more features added into NSO apps, like Rewind and Rollback netcode added to N64 on Switch's successor since it's currently the odd man out for the classic apps.

One of the big things I think not only could they do, but they should do, is to bolster Switch Online and give themselves a bit of a boost in terms of their holiday lineup this year, is to pull the trigger on classic Pokémon games coming to NSO. Millions of people will sub to the service to play every Pokémon game from gens 1 through 3, gen 3 would also be a huge boon for the expansion pack tier all by itself. Their Holiday 2024 is likely to be very meager, so they could treat "Classic Pokémon on NSO" as one of their big releases for the holiday to help maintain some brand momentum into Switch 2. Pokémon itself also would also benefit from the PR win with fans by rereleasing the classic titles after the disaster which was Scarlet/Violet, and to an extent all the other Switch main series Pokémon games. There also will not be a Pokémon release this holiday, so it's not like releasing the old games could hurt the sales of something else, they did something similar in 2015 on 3DS virtual console when there wasn't a Pokémon release that year. The fact the single most popular franchise on Nintendo's handhelds isn't on NSO in a large capacity is a massive missed opportunity.
The thing about tying next-gen upgrade patches to NSO's expansion tier is also something I can easily see them doing. Updating dozens of games for free doesn't seem the most financially sustainable decision, and charging say $10 per game also doesn't seem like many people would be thrilled about it, but tying it to a subscription gives them the best of both worlds with minimal drawback.
GameCube, Wii and 3DS are too lucrative in terms of ports and remasters for it to ever see them be on NSO. I could see them adding those ports/remasters to NSO subs years down the line, I don't think people will be buying say Pikmin 2 HD in 2027. Older titles being added to a "game pass" like tier could also work, instead of day one or year one titles getting added, they could have older games that have since stopped selling put onto that tier to entice people. I don't see it happening but I don't think it's completely out of the realm of possibility.
In addition, they could do something similar to what Valve did to stop scalpers of the Steam Deck, and allow exclusive early pre-orders for Switch 2 to people with NSO expansion subscriptions before the general public can pre-order or reserve units at stores.

I absolutely despise not being able to play the games I PURCHASED digitally on two different consoles. Only physical allows such a thing.
It's a huge issue more importantly found when playing Pokémon, as with physical cartridges I can without issues boot the game in two consoles and trade pokémon or adventure in the same world. However, if purchased digitally, I can either play on the main console or on the secondary console, no trades and no adventuring along possible. This becomes a larger issue when the DLC is introduced, as then they all behave like digital purchases, so forget about making points in the new academy somewhat efficiently.
It's so dumb, PlayStation's method of sharing would solve this issue so easily. Hope they'll change it someday 🤞

I think a caveat to the bundled DLC thing here is that the ones that came with NSO were announced as tie-ins with NSO expansion pass before the DLC launched. I don't see them retroactively bundling it. I feel like there may be something to gain in additional services as a tie in vs additional emulated games/systems with NSO. Nintendo has a massive backlog of soundtracks that are unavailable to stream anywhere and enough demand that people go to orchestras for Kirby/Zelda music. Switch 2 having a NSO app with its own music streaming service included would be a unique value add that could appeal beyond the retro gaming crowd.

ATP I would say NSO is basically worth it if not almost worth it (if they were to add GCN it would seal the deal). I just hope they actually have better online next system which is really where they are lacking. it seems to be mostly a hardware issue tho and not full incompetence (tho they prob are still behind compared to sony or MS) so that should be solved next console but I hope they throughly invest in their online infrastructure cuz beside individual games the overall environment is sorely lacking
DLC is also prob nintendo's attempt at putting 'recent' releases on their service. They will never put actual new first-party releases but DLC is a good way to encourage people to buy those releases without giving them away.

About Switch 2's backwards compatibility and if there is one. I think yes, but actually no.
I think Nintendo will port games from Switch 1 to Switch 2, and use their online accounts to allow something like Xbox's "smart delivery". There might be an emulation layer made by Nvidia for people who bought physical, but it's in Nintendo's best interest for you to buy a natively optimized version of their games instead of emulation.
By natively porting a game from a generation to another, you either
get native resolution, more consistent framerate and possibly even improved battery life because of a Switch 2's optimized chipset. You could supposedly get better performance at lower wattage, and improved battery life. It's better for Nintendo and for the consumer to buy a game and have it run as best as it can rather than runnikg it at 99% precision at best (and the hardware load of running an emulator).

The more features are attached to this the more frustrating the consumer experience becomes for those who just want to play the games they choose to buy. We lost analogue triggers after the GameCube. We lost a second screen after the 3DS. We lost cameras and mics after the Wii U.
These little things make it hard to make older games available unless there's significant retooling to them, and by that point it's best to just issue a full remaster
