At this point, I’m just glad that Nintendo has been so conservative with its generational hardware bumps. Looking at the rest of the industry and how studios and companies have been breaking their backs to keep up with their perception of audience expectations and the standards set by these leaps in hardware, and how they’ve had to heavily monetize every miniscule thing to recoup costs on these insane development pipelines, Nintendo is comparatively sitting very pretty.
Their quality is largely consistent, as is their release schedules (aside from this year, considering the next console has potentially been pushed to next year).

Having a console that isn't sold at a loss and games that aren't developed at a loss helps a lot. Nintendo just generally doesn't believe in the loss leader model and have conditioned consumers to expect that you get good content when you pay for it.

@@agromchungand this is why I typically only buy Nintendo's consoles rather than the others. If it is raw power that I want, my PC can deliver that in massive quantities, but one thing it can not do officially is play Nintendo games, and it wouldn't support Nintendo's efforts in any case. Besides, it has often been my experience that Nintendo games usually play best on Nintendo hardware even when emulation is used, and so I usually stick to emulating Nintendo systems on newer Nintendo hardware anyway.

Console generation across the board have gotten less and less impressive that Nintendo is actually the only one doing anything interesting by getting more out of seemingly outdated tech. The fact I can play Tears of the Kingdom on what is basically a 10 year old tablet in terms of power is way more impressive than anything on the other current and vastly more powerful system.

The problem with this argument is that Tears of the Kingdom seriously struggles to run on the Switch, rarely running above 20 FPS consistently. Nintendo is too far behind the technology curve with the Switch, since it bears the burden of being the home console and not just the handheld.

I think one factor that wasnt touched on was cost. Part of the appeal of using stale tech is value, in the last 10 years processing power has declined in price rapidly. With the next Nintendo console lagging a bit in time since the PS5/XBoneX they'll have more margin to play with to either give us more power or deliver at a competitive price

Honestly, the staying a gen behind the competitors has a major benefit in another way, allows 3rd parties to double dip releases from last gen that would have not been able to run on switch or run well wiithout huge downgrades to be ported over. This actually encourages a lot of releases early in the life span since you will see a lot of PS4/xbox One\pc titles being sent over to really bolster the library while Nintendo is still working on getting their first party releases. Also these ports allow 3rd parties time to learn the hardware and get more efficient at it.

Absolutely agree. The only real noteworthy downside to Nintendo consoles being generally weaker than the competition's systems is that it really limits the quality AND quantity of third party support, something that they've struggled with for a few generations now. I've always seen Nintendo systems as complimentary consoles, I had a Wii U/Switch alongside my PS4 and currently have a Switch, PS5 and Series X. While the Switch's third party support is far better than previous gens, in a lot of cases (though not all), the Switch versions of games can be fairly worse due to the hardware. This doesn't really impact me, and it might not for a lot of people, but there's still plenty of people that only buy Nintendo consoles that probably WOULD play an Elden Ring or an Armoured Core or a Call of Duty IF the hardware was capable.

  • @izuthree

In terms of the very credible hardware leaks for what SoC the Switch 2 is using, it does indeed seem like it'll be around the PS4 region of performance, but the handheld PC hardware market is also an important factor - no matter how much you spend on a Steam Deck competitor with more powerful hardware, they generally still converge at roughly the same performance level if you want 'reasonable' battery life as a result of hardware power limits.
Nintendo will absolutely want to target higher battery life even at the cost of performance, which puts, in terms of plausible mobile hardware at a *best case scenario* around the Steam Deck performance. Any more and it'll ruin battery life and production cost. For Nintendo? IMO, that's more than enough power. Especially if they have some ML scaling from nvidia for docked play.

I suspect that the Super Switch is going to be an interesting mix of behind the curve raw power and close to cutting edge features. With for example the raw performance to hit 1080p60, but with hardware accelerated ray tracing functions and hardware designed from the ground up to work with DLSS. So I think it's going to be very difficult to do a direct comparison to other devices by its on-paper performance numbers.

Much like people compare the Switch to the PS3 but the far more modern chipset and the higher amount of RAM let it do things the PS3 couldn't do, yes. I think a similar situation where Switch 2 is roughly similar in some ways to the PS4 but actually designed around compatibility with modern game engines like UE5 and with a more modern chipset meaning it's actually going to be way easier to downport games designed for PS5/XBox Series to Switch 2 than to their older consoles just because Switch 2 was designed with modern engines in mind.

It's a matter of tech, anything too strong, like 4K 120fps, is not likely to be used for a portable console, the power source would have to be way larger, which means the console itself would be too big and unwieldy for a portable machine.
So no, most likely we aren't getting anything too big when it comes to a power jump, consistent 720p handheld and 1080p in dock? Sure that is something modern tech can handle without having to scale the components too much, but I don't see 4K being something likely.

    • @agromchung

I suspect we'll see a lot of crossgen titles (Elden Ring, for example) running at 1080p with some upscaling and occasional games running at 4K if they aren't too demanding, like the next 3D Mario or Mario Kart. The reported 1080p screen on the handheld is probably going to development slightly easier because devs can match target resolution between TV and handheld much easier.

I'd just like to note that --
Nintendo is the only hardware manufacturer that is partnered up with NVidia.
    Why does this matter?
Well because NVidia has made some very interesting but very proprietary (I.E.: Other developers are not legally allowed to make something that works similarly) technologies in frame generation and upscaling. So even if raw-computational-power wise the Switch's successor might not be that powerful (and it should be noted that historically, AMD GPUs, which are used by the other consoles, have had more raw horsepower than the NVidia ones in the PC Space--) -- It'll probably push out some very impressive visuals & higher framerates off the back of NVidia's proprietary frame-generation tech (again, see the stuff NVidia GPUs have been doing on the PC space, as compared to the AMD/Intel competition).
That said, I'll be surprised if the Switch's successor is just "A Switch but more powerful". Nintendo doesn't like doing _normal things_ -- They like to surprise everyone with a left-hook of weirdness.
The GameCube was probably the most normal thing they ever made, and even that had a very unique controller, a unique disc format, and some oddball features, yanno?

Nintendo have a lot of history with stereoscopic 3D and other tech that could usefully transfer. MP4 and Mario Kart would be great launch titles for VR and Pokemon Go shows the potential in the AR space. The "Switch Attach" rumour is interesting to me because a beefier Switch but with the gimmick that it can attach to a range of peripherals including a VR headset makes perfect sense. I don't think, like 3DS, it will be their core selling point though as they want to encourage social play and motion sickness with VR seems to be a particular issue in Japan.

Nintendo would likely need to spend a ton of development time on making a vr engine. Nintendo's announcement that Prime 4 development was pretty much scrapped and restarted pretty cleanly lines up with when switch 2 development likely ramped up internally. I suspect Prime 4 has been planned for the switch 2 since. This would give the team ample time to upgrade the engine internally. Whether or not it would be for vr, I don't know, I at least think they will try with Metroid prime sort of like how the resident evil games have vr modes. The whole aiming the wii mote at the screen just naturally translates.

  • @GabePlaysYT
    @GabePlaysYT Před 2 měsíci +1

It does seem like the general consensus online is that the Switch 2 will be around the PS4/PS4 Pro, which I think is absolutely perfect. The reality is that, more than ever, Nintendo doesn't need to chase cutting edge technology. To this day, there are only so many PS5 exclusives and many of the biggest titles in recent years (e.g. RDR2, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Baldur's Gate 3, God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok, Marvel's Spider-Man, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and so-on and so-forth) are cross-gen titles that are also available on the PS4. The Switch 2 "only" needs to be as powerful as it needs to tap into this wellspring of gaming. Sony is currently working on a PS5 Pro and opinions online right now are that it doesn't even feel necessary as it feels like the 9th gen has even started yet (a problem that Nintendo has avoided completely with their absolute constant stream of games). Even better, because the Switch 2 is reported to benefit from Nvidia's DLSS and upscaling technology, the Switch 2 has a certain level of future-proof that the OG Switch doesn't. It'll continue to look BETTER overtime as Nvidia improves their algorithms. It's also important to state that the Switch 2 likely will not "just" be as powerful as a PS4/PS4 Pro simply because it's been ten years on. It'll have a more modern CPU, more RAM, significantly faster loading times, and the aforementioned DLSS that the PS4 could only dream of. All this is say that, while the Switch 2 is likely to be around a PS4/PS4 Pro on paper, the actual experience is likely to be higher. Likely higher than a Steam Deck which doubles as a portable PC and perhaps as high as an Xbox Series S console. All this is to say that Nintendo's methodology is about to pay huge. An affordable $400 handheld console with PS4 Pro power that can tap into most of the most popular games of recent times and have a level of futureproof with DLSS is going to make it a very strong console for the next ten years.

people always think nintendo likes to hold back but it's more trying to hit a performance metric within a set cost. they will go as far as they believe is necessary to ride out the rest of the gen. Now that they've combined their hardware divisions tho, I think nintendo has to and think they realize that you need a certain level of performance nowadays especially if u want third party Support. Nintendo went hard on third party this gen as they realized the value of it. In order to keep as much as possible, they'll have to of course have hardware that is desirable and applicable. Nintendo will likely try to reduce cost as much as possible but instead of them dictating what's good enough, now they have to reach a specific threshold within those metrics. No one expects a hybrid device to be on par so as long as it's a gen behind, that is satisfactory for developers and consumers.
the problem with the switch was I think it was just shy of performance metrics that nintendo should have gone for imo. It wasnt just that it couldnt hit higher fidelty or fps but even the targets that were set, something to ride out the rest of the gen. As stated, this time around nintendo has tech like AI that will help keep their next console competitive and even when the ps6 and next xbox come, stick around for a bit longer.

In regards of power, I think Nintendo will still be quite conservative because of battery management. Having a cooling fan inside the Switch was a solution at the time, but it consumes a considerable amount of battery life and made the console a bit bulky (specially the first model).
With the next Switch, I can see them ditching the cooling fan out of the unit and use passive cooling through some holes in the back of the unit. This will not only make battery life a bit better on a regular model, but also will give space for a Lite model (seriously, look up how much space a cooling fan and a cartridge slot take on a Switch Lite; I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being digital-only).
When docked, a cooling fan built into the dock could send air through those same holes and send cold air directly to the chipset, so there still should be a significant upgrade in power when docked.
If I had to guess, the next generation will have its own name and be available in two models; a $300 "Lite" model that's pocketable and digital-only, and a $400 "Switch" model that can be dockable, has a bigger screen/battery and Joycons.

Nintendo's philosophy for hardware has been one I've been very welcoming of especially in my adult years. I just cannot justify the purchase of a PS5 still and I want one for some of its exclusives, but it's a small number now. I have more mileage out of my PC when I support it. I don't even consider the Xbox anymore, because why? It's games are all on PC now. No need. Nintendo's consoles are generally affordable and easier to buy. I have one Switch for each of our players (3 total). That's also great for Nintendo, but I could barely get one PS5.
For the record, why have I bought the same system 3 times versus 1 and 1 for a Switch and PS5? Because I'm not the only one who wants to play the Switch, and my wife. I would only have bought one for my wife but probably not my son if the systems were more expensive. Thankfully they are very affordable and both of them still play all the games we have because majority of purchases are physical. If I was primarily digital owner it may also have been different.

I don't get this talk about hardware generations. Right now it seems like a potential successor has 2 main limiting factors: One being mobile battery life which dictates what other components can be in the hardware and the other is the prize tag for the consumer (which I can't see Nintendo ever going beyond 400€/$ to be honest).

It's weird that people keep saying "Mild jump in power" and saying "PS4 level" at the same time. A PS4 level Switch successor would be 4-5x stronger than the current Switch. It'd be a pretty major jump. (FWIW I think PS4 level is the most likely endpoint given how much mobile tech has advanced in the last 7 years and...that's fine! That'd be a really beefy handheld)

Instead of third party game dev needing newest tech for most of the game, instead console manufacturers wanting the dev to make enhancement to sell their hardware. I think 1.5 tflops would be enough for most dev, hence they are continuing to support PS4/Xbox one. Therefore, Nintendo is likely not going beyond the sweet spot which is very easy to reach and my disbelief in the t239 rumours. 2013 tech would be more than enough, even if the projection is 2015 for their patterns.

Considering how horribly stunted the 9th generation of home consoles turned out, a (fully expected) leap to around PS4 levels of performance would put Nintendo in direct competition for a good number of multiplatform releases, especially considering Sony's own recent stats indicating that about half of active PS players are still on PS4 themselves, as well as Square Enix's statements about PS5 exclusivity holding them back. And it's not even that different from the launch of the Switch, with the Nintendo hybrid system still being a full generation behind the "competition", yet that's going to mean even less now than it did then because the "impossible ports" of yesteryear are standard procedure today.

Secondarily, Nintendo prioritizes battery life and low heat. The Switch’s chip was underclocked compared to what it could do.

I like the metric of ‘tech years behind’ - but I do think this analysis is actually overly pessimistic for the Switch 2s chances.
If you’ve been following the rumors closely, we now have a pretty damn good idea of the chip that will be in the next Switch - and it will be using tech from the Nvidea 3000 series (including DLSS upscaling (which will be incredibly useful) and raytracing (which given the power budget, probably for the most part won’t be)) but down-clocked for similar raw performance to the PS4.
However, the Switch was already capable of playing games from the PS4 era, albeit with major graphical compromises. There are credible rumors that people were shown footage of BotW running at 4K 60fps, and the Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 demo running on target Switch 2 hardware at a game show a couple of years ago - things the PS4 simply wouldn’t have been able to run.
It seems likely that the next Switch will be capable of providing experiences that would have been impossible to run on the PS4 generation, and will be able to play current gen games - again, with significant graphical compromises to get there.

    • @switchitup3709
      @switchitup3709 Před 2 měsíci

He doesn't know what tech years mean. You're not ten years tech behind on the Switch 2 because of raw power. Raw power doesn't work like that. Nintendo CAN'T get the PS5 power because there is no mobile chip that powerful out in the market.

    • @scruvydom
      @scruvydom Před 2 měsíci

Sure, but he makes it clear that he's talking from an experiential point of view, rather than a strictly technical one. And experientially, the Switch 2 will have modern hardware features that will allow it to play a number of PS5 generation games, but because of the power constraints of the mobile chip - it will obviously run these games with significant downgrades.
This is basically the exact same situation as the OG Switch, which had a modern-ish GPU with a lot of the feature set of the PS4 / Xbox 1 chips - and could therefore run games on contemporary engines like UE4, all the Id Software stuff etc - just with big performance and graphical downgrades.
If anything, the Switch 2 could make things more interesting because its Nvidia chipset is going to have some major feature benefits over the AMD chips inside the X Box Series and PS5 consoles. Balanced against its significant deficit in raw performance, it's going to make for some very interesting comparisons when it comes to cross platform titles. I wouldn't be surprised if some games end up looking significantly better than on the Series S for instance, because of superior upsampling and Ray Tracing performance.

Thinking about it. Yeah. You can sat that philosophy worked once with the Wii. However, it failed with the Wii U. The Switch, in a way, abandon that philosophy and it succeeded.

You mean to tell me if there was a processor, right now, as powerful as the PS5 that Sony wouldn't have made a hybrid model instead of a traditional console? Switch soc in 2017 was a top of the class mobile hardware and was 2 years old (and a lot more advanced that what you may find in PS Vita and even PS4 or XOne for some aspects).Comparing the performance of mobile hardware with desktop hardware is like comparing apples to oranges. Would you say that Steam Deck in 2022 was 10 years old in performance? It would sound stupid...
Your are confusing a lot of differenti things... 3DS was ancient mobile hardware in 2011... Same as all the handhelds Nintendo produced before Switch and Switch Lite.
Same for the Wii that was a generation behind at day one and even if Wii U was a big leap, it used a 4 years old GPU and an ancient 11 year old CPU (even if revamped).
You have to compare things in a better way.

What bothers me the most about nintendo and their console power right now is that they don't seem to realize (or maybe they don't care) that for the past 3 years, their high-end games have been chugging on their hardware. Badly. Bayonetta 3, Xenoblade 3 and TotK all have significant framedrop and rendering issues, especially on portable. I don't really mind Nintendo being behind the game by a few years. I can go to my PC or my PS5 for a more rich experience in that regard. I do mind when their own games are held back or outright hurt by this behavior. And this is to say nothing of the fact that I no longer buy third party games on the console because the portability factor just doesn't matter when the games don't run.
The one thing everyone should keep in mind when talking about the Switch 2's power is pricing. Successful consoles, every single time in history, have been sold at a reasonable price compared to their competitors. Nintendo has also no doubt seen the failure of the PS5 and taken note of the lack of market for high-end dedicated machines. So they know that making the console cost too much will kill it- but how will they keep the price down? They could cut some storage, or the dock, or... Maybe the power isn't all we might hope for. There's absolutely some technical wizardry to come, to maintain what I expect to be a $400 pricepoint.
